What a pleasure to have such non-fussy camera work. No fade-ins/outs, no double exposures, no irrelevant pans to the decoration on the ceiling, no multiple split images and no non-vertical shots. Just let Schumann do the talking. The good ol' days !!
I couldn't agree more. A camera director who wants to serve the music rather than his own ego. No hideous intrusive close-ups of the performer's sweaty brow either, and no frantic changes of camera angle every two seconds. Today's video directors are all schooled in the cess-pit of television, have not a musical bone in their body, and think they're filming a football match or a riot on the streets. ARTE Verbier Festival, Chopin Competition, I'm talking about you.
Marvelous! How does one person memorize so many musical notes and play so elegantly and beautifully? Wonderful Schumann, excellence conductor George Hurst, supreme Claudio Arrau! Bravo to the orchestra, too. A+++++❤🎉
Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor is a delicate composition, full of romantic and emotional passages, as well as passionate moments. It requires someone like Claudio Arrau to bring it to life in the special manner in which he almost always does it and delivers it, in the manner that Schumann himself would want it in the open, most likely. This live concert, as orchestrated, and aged as it is, delivers it well!
The early 1960s saw Arrau at his artistic peak. Here we witness a performance of measured intensity and subtlety, free of empty gestures and irritating mannerisms. Many of todays young pretenders should take note.
I think this is the best version of the Schumann Concerto I have heard. Argerich performs this wonderfully but so powerfully I think it losses something...Arrau plays it like he is holding a baby bird! Such grace and fantastic touch! His feeling for what is supposed to sound like, and his execution to get there is incredible!
Arrau's EXCELLENT playing with his own personal interpretation! WOW! He touches every single key on the grand piano with great sensitivity for every single note he is playing, not leaving anything aside. Especially the 2nd movement where he plays with extreme carefulness. A joy to listen to him!
Maravilloso... Me siento endeudado contigo Farookhq17, has subido un verdadero tesoro en joyas musicales del maestro Arrau mediante tu canal y las has puesto a disposición de todos. Muchísimas gracias de todo corazón.
For those who were wondering, Arrau is accompanied by the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by George Hurst. The DVD is issued by EMI, it features this and other performances by Arrau, and includes one by Solomon.
Superb is the only word for it. Every note, every nuance, every phrase carefully, lovingly considered, beautifully-thought-out and as perfectly realized as any human could ever hope to do. Arrau was in his prime during the fifties and sixties. Later on his playing grew rather stodgy. I heard him play the Brahms Bb with the Rochester Philharmonic in 1961 or 1962, and it was ABSOLUTE PERFECTION one of the most a amazing musical events I've ever witnessed. And he had the very best SOUND in the business.
Yo are so lucky. But he is extraordinary in his interpretations of Debussy later in his career. He is so thoughtful in all his interpretations, and therefore thought-and feeling-provoking.
Thanks for posting. But er... have you not noticed? There are 50 other musicians on stage apart from Arrau. Pray who might they be? Superb performance, as always from Arrau. He's the perfect antidote to speed-maniacs like Argerich, he lets us hear the music.
And yet he's able to play faster than those speed maniac if he wants to... He actually played very fast when he was young, then his teacher and father figure (martin krause) died and he went through a very long psychoanalysis, he started playing much slower around that time (by his own words, those 2 facts are connected). I recommend the book "conversation with Arrau"
Yes. I bet at least 40 times I've watched Maestro Arrau and the orchestra and Conductor (George Hurst, I believe) collaborate on this wonderful performance! Thank you for all the joy this video brings to everyone fortunate enough to see it and listen to it. Again and again!
Tremendo artista Claudio Arrau. Gran concierto y majestuosa orquesta y dirección.
The conductor to be lauded too is George Hurst, who we lost last year. So the orchestra then would be the BBC Northern/Philharmonic or BBC Scottish. Hurst, a great conductor with no airs, was therefore greatly "under-rated". But not by those who heard his performances or played with him! If you ARE known by the company you keep/inspire, having Andrew Davis, John Eliot Gardiner and Simon Rattle as students is not bad. Incredible technique-and all the people who worked with him adored him.
his wrists are like snakes movin around the keyboard, his flexibility is awesome very virtusic and poetry at the same time, maybe something like frank liszt

More powerful louder than Arrau Pollini Argerich=Mikhail Pletnev!, The Second Loudest ever was Lazar Berman! The 3rd Loudest was Erwin Nyiregyhazi! Horowitz his technique attack better than Arrau's Pollini's Argerich's technique attack!!
I adore this piece Arrau, he is so technically on point and carries this marvelously without overpowering the whole piece, it is subtle but he knows when to bring it out and when to stay subdued. I still think Helene Grimaud’s version the best ;)
Michael Pak you can’t put in the same level Arrau and Helene Grimaud!!! He is the master of masters and she is an amateur student compared to him ,... no discussion the facts speak for themselves !!!!
What a pleasure to have such non-fussy camera work. No fade-ins/outs, no double exposures, no irrelevant pans to the decoration on the ceiling, no multiple split images and no non-vertical shots. Just let Schumann do the talking. The good ol' days !!
The film on Richter and his Brandeburg has almost all the things you listed and still is pure gold.

True, and when you hear his breathings on the recordings, you know he's living his interpretation intensely ! He's just keeping it for himself
Great comment : I feel just the same!
A true master. Heard him several times with symphony orchestras--so refined--no distracting gestures.
Probably the most beautiful piano concerto ever written. Just a master piece played by a master of the piano. Magnificent.
Beauty without limits. Historical performance for the next generations.
Absolutely the best version
I think this is the best version of the Schumann Concerto I have heard. I think you´re right. Claudio Arrau´s connection with the composer is unique, a phenomen, a profound and delicate bond almost no pianist ever had.
I agree. Probably the ultimate version.
Agree. Plus belle qu'argrich
Argerich studied with Arrau
Arrau ovvero la nobiltà in musica. Grandissimo musicista!
I've had this music in my head for the last 4 days.. singing it on hikes or working ... I HAD to listen to it. This performance was magnificent.
