omg yes, someone who doesn't love Cassandra Clare. I felt so lonely. I read City of Bones several years ago and I really hated it. I read Clockwork Angel because everyone (literally) said that Clare's writing got better (but I did not see any sign of improvement, to be honest). And I tried Lady Midnight... but I couldn't finish it. And now I think she's gonna make another trilogy or so (about the same world as always, of course). I mean... Stop it already!!!
Cassandra Clare's books are not for me. I do not like her writing style and her characters are bland.
I don't mean to be rude by saying this, but I think she's an overrated author. There's plenty of books out there with plots similar to Clare's ideas (like The Dark Days Club, as an example -with all of the demon stuff) that are way better.
Great video, by the way! Worth every minute.

Her primary focus seems to be the romances and parabatai relationships she writes in each book, specifically love triangles, which in and of itself is not inherently bad. A focus on romance is maybe a carry over from her Harry Potter fanfiction days where most of what she wrote way back then was about Draco and Hermonie, and she didn't have to worldbuild because JK Rowling already did it all. (Worldbuilding being already done by the original author is inherently true for all fanfiction. So, when fanfic authors make the jump to pro, it's up to them to improve their worldbuiding skills for their own properties or not, lol.)
And so, a romance focus lends Shadowhunter worldbuilding in each successive book to be not as expansive as something you'd get with, say, A Game of Thrones. Worldbuilding doesn't really have to be enormously expansive when your genre is a Romance + Urban Fiction mashup with a heavy focus on Romance. There's "just enough" worldbuilding in her series for her to explore whatever romance stories she wants because those romance stories are basically the star-crossed "their love is against the Clave's rules" romances, and she has already established what those rules are for her world with book one.
Could her stories benefit from more worldbuilding? Sure. I mean, that's one cool aspect of having an Urban Fiction setting, in this case the hidden magical world. More worldbuilding can add greater depth and more immersive experiences. That said, I do love Magnus Bane, who is by far the best character in any of her series, and I will internet beef anyone who says otherwise, lol.

I especially hate the one part where Julian and Emma are joking around and then Cassandra is over here like; This is Emma and Julian.
    Me: Yes, I see that.
Cassandra: This is them being normal.
    Me: I.Know.That!
Cassandra: This is them laughing and teasing like when they were 12.

I didn't finish this book, but from what I read, Ty's character is just. . . ugh. I heard he is supposed to be autistic and Cassandra Clare apparently has a brother who's autistic. That being said, as someone who is actually autistic, the way it was done is awful. What I read wasn't very consistent, or just didn't make sense, and the rest was basically just the "nicer" stereotype. I want to be able to appreciate an attempt to show autistic people not as a burden (especially after having read up on the Gone series crap), but I honestly can't here. She clearly doesn't understand what it's like to be autistic and never bothered to consult anyone who is when creating this character.

Clare ain't gonna change. She & other trendy YA authors have a corner of the zeitgeist & are grinning broadly at the merry jingle of the cash register while dispensing their usual pop scribblings to the masses. Love or leave her books she ain't gonna transform herself into some paragon of authorial virtue. U & eg. the authentic observer are gonna Clare-book bash & eg. emmmabooks & polandbananasbooks are gonna praise her tomes to the skies. YA readers can choose to buy stuff that is better literary quality or they can shell the dollars, euros, pounds etc. on the latest Clare fare (or Sarah J Maas fare for that matter). If the consumers didn't buy it, Clare would go nowhere.
Mass market trendy genre fiction is zeitgeist. Once it brought the world Shane/Schaefer & On the Beach/Shute. Pop culture has this ephemeral quality to it & it follows all the winds of doctrine.
Do I like Clare's product? Umm no. I call her stuff can-be-pernicious prolefeed, as word-coiner Orwell used the term. And lots of other authors as well, some YA & others not so--not just Clare falls under this c-b-p prolefeed banner. Clare & Co. do give publishers profits. With said profits, publishers can and sometimes do crank out better quality stuff, typically works that don't make nearly as much profit. But such works ain't trendy, nor do they feed the need of the voracious & largely female tween, teen & low-to-mid 20s reading audience, the world's biggest book-buying demographic. The situation is not the best. Rather, it is a realistic, market-driven trade-off.

I have never read a Cassandra Clare book ( most likely never will) I just enjoy your rants. Those quotes had me crying.😂 "I love you more than starlight" WTF!
Question: If it's forbidden to have romantic relationship why don't they match them against they're sexual orientation? Like if a character is straight, match them to someone of the same gender, if they're gay, matched with someone of the opposite gender. Even if a character is bisexual if they are matched with someone who is straight then those feeling won't be recuperated.( As much people try to deny it physical attractions is important to a lot people when comes to relationships) This will eliminate the factor of sexual attraction and decrease the possibility of romantic partnerships.

Hi! I've read Mortal Instruments, Infernal Devices and Dark Artifices, I'm not the biggest fan but I appreciate them, especially the first trilogy (Mortal Instruments 1-2-3), which I read as a teenager. As often happens, I think the first books are interesting and original and then the story starts repeating itself. I am still able to find them enjoyable and overlook their flaws, though, possibly out of nostalgy because I started reading them many years ago.
That being said, I generally agree with your criticism of Lady Midnight, in particular:
    - the references to the old characters (Clary & co.): I get that it's nice to know what happened to them, I like that sometimes, but I don't like that they are depicted as wise old mentors, marrying and adopting children, while actually they are just 22. And the whole Jace being the greatest Shadowhunter EVAAAH... He was good at fighting, he surely had a role in the war, but come on (and the same goes for Emma).
    - Julian (but quite anybody) treating his siblings as little children: as you said, they are not really children anymore. In the original trilogy, Max Lightwood was 9 and acted accordingly, reading books and having actual conversations. Here, Octavian is 8 and yet you would think he is 4 or 5.
By the way, I had so much fun listening to you reading parts of the book! :'D

AAh, this I needed. So happy to see something analytical about this.
Just a little thing: autism isn't a mental health issue, it can cause (or partly cause) mental health issues like anxiety, depression and OCD though. You wouldn't say dyslexia of ADHD is a mental health issue, so why do it with autism? It's neurodiversity, literally the synapses in the brain are connected differently.
I do have a milder form of autism and ADHD (and probably dyslexia), and it does cause issues, but my mental health at the moment is great.
On the topic of the book: that description of Ty (was it Ty?) does sound like autism, but then I don't get why you can't call him different.

    • @jersy6406
      @jersy6406 6 лет назад +4

I think she knows, but she was lacking a word that includes mental health issues, autism and whatever else Ty could have or be.
She means the author does not want to call him different, probably to avoid offending anyone.

@@jersy6406 I know she didn't mean harm, but that doesn't mean what she said automatically sits right.
It was meant more like a: be careful about how you say things type of thing. Because implying things like this, even if it is unintentional, can really hurt. If a single word fails (which in this case it does, it would for me as well), it is more practical to describe in a sentence.
I'm not offended btw. That doesn't happen so easily, it is solely the fact that the wording wasn't as on point as it could, especially since Theresa does have a more than decent vocabulary.
And also: why do you need to stand up for Theresa? She is perfectly eloquent herself. And you are assuming things for her right now. They are probably right, but I'd just have rather seen her write it herself
If I come across as angry of mean, it isn't meant that way. The words that were said, no matter the tone or context, just bothered me.

Also a reason I like the books is because of the potential the complex society of the shadowhunters has - and then its wasted. I mean moving from the infernal devices, to the mortal instruments, to the dark artifices, there could be so much development depicted. It seemed like the times when the books took place were purposefully laid out for just that reason but then, nothing

YES!! All in all I enjoyed the read but I had to roll my eyes a lot on the Jace-is-the-best interludes whenever the opportunity opened up. Shadowhunter hero ok whatever, but still these people idolize and think about him too much to be realistic... AND THIS IS NOT A STORY ABOUT JACE

    • @nanaissayinsth
      @nanaissayinsth 3 года назад

Another thing that annoyed me especially in this book: when characters are described, the actual rating of their beauty is focused on so much. Also the comparison in beauty is so annoying. How about describing the looks of a peraon in a more neutral way? Maybe describe a specific feature that is most interesting or beautiful about them. But in the way these people are described, even mediocrity doesn't have any place in Clare books and that is said and plain.

  • @WhitneyDahlin

The reason Clare didn't set the story in an interesting place like Asia or Africa is because that would involve a lot of research on those cultures. Lord knows Clare won't/can't do research. She puts in bare minimum effort because she knows her fans will love it anyway.

Has Cassandra Clare ever written an objectively good book? No. No she hasn't. She has a lot of fans but the only people who could possibly be fans of her books are people who haven't read any actual good books. Like 1984 or Anna Karenina or Madam Bovary the list goes on and on. If you are a fan of Cassandra. Pick up one of these classic books and read some good writing then come back and tell me you still think Clare is a good writer. You won't. Because she isn't.
