Great video talking about a topic in guitar that is often ignored. I remember when I first started playing how I was worried I was playing too poorly. When I was searching for a guitar I would play so softly in the guitar shop. I cared way too much about what others thought and ignored what I wanted. I started learning guitar for self expression, yet I was so worried about others. Yes in time I might perform in front of others but that's me choosing to play for them and that's when I decide. You're also right about the marketing of guitar, it's kind of counterintuitive and insulting if you think about it past the first layer. Its about you and what makes you happy. Find your own voice, it'll take time but it's worth it.
110% agree on what he says. For people who feel offended when he says classical guitarists are boring, he is not pointing towards classical music or all classical guitarists but rather towards people who have the mentality that classical way is only "right" way of playing guitar. In fact, there are several techniques which are not allowed classically like placing pinky finger on guitar body, using body percussion etc. However these techniques can greatly add comfort and excitement to your playing.
I just save this video to use in blue days. When I make everything "wrong" and think about stoped to learn guitar. "There is beauty in everywhere" ... thank you, thank you so much!
I agree 100% with you ! But when you really want to play a music you love and you can’t because your limited way of playing, it’s very frustrating ! Since I know your chanel I feel myself a better guitar player ! Thanks my friend !
Good advice. Why does everyone who picks up a guitar and makes a You Tube have to go grow a goatee or beard and go out and get a hat? They think they have to look hip. That doesn’t make better music. Keep up the good work, you are great.
Hello sir! Gareth Evans channel is about to be terminated and now I am really concerned about this channel. I really don't understand why RUclips is doing this to Gareth Evans channel. Sir, you please make sure that this does not happens with your channel. We don't wanna lose your channel.🙏
That's why I stopped getting lessons because I was only interested in fingerstyle and I was using different fingers for different strings to make my guitar playing easy for me but it was all wrong according to them but I am left-hand and I find fingerstyle a lot easier to learn.
I'm not left handed but my strumming sounded so shit, I was losing the will to live. Then I tried fingerstyle and it was like the clouds parted by comparison. I'm still not good but now I want to play every day and that makes all the difference. Also learning the songs you like, even if they are hard, is essential, at least in my case. It's much easier to get the rhythm that way. And just playing around on the guitar, not playing anything in particular but discovering sounds you enjoy, seeing what the guitar can do and whatnot. Just making it a fun experience.
I have had a non conventional way of holding the pick for 8 years and recently i came across the “right way” to hold it. I’ve had neck shoulder pain and what not trying to play “right” for the past month. Not anymore!
I even made my own scale....It dosnt exist in some people's world or playing. it exist in mine. :-P Melodic min b5 Loc maj7 dor b4 aeo b4... example...from the Loc maj7....i can play C ion #6....phy #4....or mix #2 I could alter these chords... C Maj7 or C7....G Maj or min ...E min or dim or A# Maj.... or if i play the D dorian b4...or D aeo b4 I could make D as MAJ, aug, min or dominant..play the B as min b9 with a tritone. The A melodic min b5...will simply create D lyd dominant b2.. I could play it dominant...but I can also play the 3, 5, b7, b9 arpeggio too) it'll also create a B dorian b2, b4...B Maj or B min Im going to play those different CHORDS..while in the key of C MAJOR/Amin as the parent key.... In other words....I CANT PLAY a WRONG NOTE or CHORD.lol
Famous classical music composer used to be also great in improvisation. It's the need to make money through branding, uniformed teaching standards that all school can easily follow, many levels of examination that kill improvisation for the classical guitar.
To add to your point of not having to conform, you actually don’t need nails for classical or flamenco. Like you are saying it all boils down to the sound you want to produce. There are classical and flamenco players and teachers who use just the flesh of their fingers. Thinking I needed nails kept me away from those two genres for the longest time until I found these teachers and players. 😁 Ash Wainman, Rob MacKillop are just two. there’s actually a great playlist on RUclips Flesh - Fingertip - No Nails Gut/Nylon Strings ruclips.net/p/PLkK7ZcE7L9HE3mB54_qOKrHF0PNluDJC-
Take it easy, you crossed the line between being motivational to start to being disrespectful. Generalizing classical musicians, creating separatism, is that the way that do you want newcomers to the instrument to think? Putting the same barrier that old musicians guys did? Does actually popular and classical guitar need to be separated? Theres only one school and its called guitar, the techniques is for you to master how to play and has nothing to do with musicality, also, studying classic or popular wont change yourself, it will only help to grow the way you play and mold you to find better ways to express yourself. English is not my main language, I hope you that is reading this will be able to understand.
I didn't take it as disrespect. I actually like classical music a lot and there is truth to what he says. Music (and art schools, for that matter) are obsessed with technique above everything else. As a result, there are plenty orchestras that sound robotic. As with every genre, you get ensembles that manage to develop their own sound but your average orchestra does sound lackluster. I say that not as a musician but as someone who's been going to classical music shows a few times a week for the past decade. There are certain pieces of music that I know very well and I heard many interpretations along the way, so I can tell the difference between an ensemble that merely plays correctly and one that brings something knew or makes you find something you never noticed in the piece. I have a background in fine arts and I can tell you it took me years and years to shed the narrow minded mentality that was forced onto me in art school, to the point I was so burned out I had to take a complete break from something that had previously always brought joy to my life. I can't even say it was necessary "the fault" of the teachers. "Teaching" anything art related is not like teaching science or a trade, where the end result is very clear. As far as art, only technique is quantifiable. The rest is in your personality and your relationship with your teacher. Sometimes someone comes along and says things like in this video, which is very fortunate, because when you become obsessed with technique you can get so caught up in doing the "correct" thing, it's easy to forget why you started in the first place. You rarely make progress unless you enjoy what you're doing, which is the message I took from this video. Most of us watching this video aren't going to become guitar gods ;-) but finding joy in playing the guitar is probably just as good.

I made a similar video yesterday... It is not cheating, if you are making music.

What the hell are you talking about dude? He couldn't have been anymore respectful to the whole world of music.
