You must be a great nurse. Sounds like your boss was smart. Real talent is hard to find. My wife was an outstanding ICU nurse in the Army(Nam era). She saved many lives, including mine. The problem was she spent many nights crying over patients that were lost. She died from a tick bite 3 years ago. Nursing can burn you out. Hikes are good sanity pauses to recharge your equilibrium. Very good video. You covered this really well. Good Luck, Rick
I am sorry for your loss Richard 🙏 and I am sorry for the mess our Country exposed us to, your wife must have been a "Rocket" by a different name .. 🐾✌️🐾 PS ... I not only follow through Hikers , I follow thru hiker comments and yours are appreciated ...
Richard, I am glad you commented about how devastating a little tick can be. I came very very close to suffering the same fate that your wife did. I was bedridden for 18 days not able to eat or drink with pretty much total body breakdown. Somehow surviving that I had to endure over a year of severe muscle pain throughout the body with fatigue an always constant. I am sorry that your wife's battle was lost, but you have done a great public service to the hiking community to be aware of the dangers of the diseases that a tick can transmit and I believe your nurse wife would have surely wanted that made known and public so in a way she can continue to save lives even in her death.
@@scottsteel2334 Thanks. I'm sorry to hear that you went through that awful illness. We all have to warn others. The government doesn't seem to be noticing because they don't report the deaths. There were 7 other people who died in our local hospital that year but it was not in the news. We can use permethrin on our clothes, take a hot soapy shower each night, and check for ticks, I also spray my land with Cutter(it screws onto the garden hose) in early April. It seems to kill all the ticks and other pests until July. I would like to spray again in July but, I'm afraid of what it might do to the humming birds and the few honey bees. Do you know which disease you had? There are 4 bacteriological and 4 viral in CT where I live. I've had Lyme 5 times and anaplasmosis twice. The babiosis in my area has become antibiotic resistant. The CT Ag Dept announced the other day that 46% of deer ticks(the tiny ones) have Lyme disease now. I hope that you fully recovered. When our Newfies had Lyme, Martha gave them Dismutase to help them recover. It seemed to work. A friend took it herself and it helped her arthritis and stopped her migraines. That was other 20 years ago. Good Luck, Rick
Richard, Lyme and the associated diseases are coronavirus light here in the great USA and as you said, the government agencies are not taking it seriously. Thanks for pointing out about the little or nymph ticks being an almost 50% carrier of lyme. In my own experience and talking to a couple of medical professionals, these little nymphs bite like a mosquito and that's it, no bullseye and the person is infected. The nymphs like to hitchhike on the alduts to share the blood at the skin breach and are not readily seen because they look like a small speck of dirt. They are almost like an invisible danger that the parents of many children in our area have found out when their children tested positive for lyme disease when the doctors couldn't figure out what was causing all the symptoms. I had both lyme and babesiosis at the same time, babesiosis being the wicked one. It put three of our rescued cats into almost a near coma for a week. As you said antibiotics do nothing. I personally have been using a herbal regimen to fight the diseases which work but are slow. One local nutritionist is giving intravenous vitamin C, internal ozone therapy and colonic irrigation which is an expensive process. Prevention as you are heroically practicing is a far greater alternative than having to risk a lifetime of crippling symptoms or even death as you had to experience with a loved one or the process of having to reply upon the medical profession to save yourself which isn't a certainty.
@@scottsteel2334 Two points that I want you to think about. 1. Lyme Disease is a germ warfare weapon that escaped from the Plum Island Laboratories, run by the US Government, in the 1950s. Plum Isl. is a few miles off of the coast of Lyme, CT. This was detailed in a Newsweek article in January 2009 after a long FOI lawsuit against the government. 2. We all need to fight the diseases by informing friends, family and acquaintances of the existence of the diseases and the actions we can take to protect our elves. In the last 3 years I have warned many people but I don't know how many actually did anything to protect themselves. Good Luck, Rick
I did 2000 miles on the AT in 1998 at age 48 (got off for health reasons at Monson) and I can not eat another Cliff bar. Snickers bar YES! You got me thinking of going back to Shaws and finishing it. All good things to you.
😁 I thru hiked in 2016. My total cost averaged $1.10 a mile. Had a blast but spent the majority of my time on the trail not in town. Resupply trips can turn lengthy and expensive.

I’m slowly working on sections of the AT as a through has passed me by. Look forward to following your next adventure. Stay safe and keep that great personality.
Just curious. I've neither read nor watched anything in the videos about daily medications. How do those who take a daily medication deal? Just have it sent in resupply boxes? Which brings up, what PO's accept general delivery boxes??
A great video and a very important topic. Thank you for covering this, your wisdom and experience will absolutely help many others who are considering this, like myself. So again, THANK YOU!!
Really good advise Rocket. I actually passed you and your tramily on the trail in New Jersey. About a minute after passing I was like "OMG that was Rocket" Oh well i enjoyed following your journey. The vlogs were great thanks again for sharing with us. I hike when i retire in 2022. Can't wait!!!
Very entertaining and informative, even the cat stopped by to watch for 30 seconds but that ended when the eerie noise of an empty town and the tumbleweed started to roll happened. This is the first trail financial video where an exit strategy and plan was discussed that I have watched ~ bravo! Any other topics that you are uninspired about that you care to discuss?
