  • Was mapping a new (unmapped) lake. Found several good structures. While mapping a bar the bass moved! It was a lot of fun!

    Way to go! Fantastic! I've heard about the deep water schooling and casting a spoonplug, great to see it!

    Jim,
    I am a 78 year old Spoonplugger, and have been one for 50 years. Great to see a younger man plying the trade.
    I have been a subscriber for several years and love your videos and your obvious enthusiasm. I just have never took the time to comment. Don’t ask me why.
    Naturally being a Spoonplugger I catch a lot of fish, and because of that was asked to make some videos showing how I do it. They just don’t know what they are are asking. Knowledge catches fish and that takes awhile. But I have made a few videos, just trying to encourage people to go to Don Dicksons RUclips channel. And right here and now I want to apologize to you Sir for not including your channel in my recommendations. Your channel is awesome and informative. Keep up the good work And again I want to apologize for my absent mindedness . I will blame that on my age.
    Buck Perry was my friend. Though I have never personally met Don Dickson I do have about as much respect for him as did Buck. I suppose my enthusiasm for what he is trying to do got me a bit too narrow minded to bring your great channel to mind. That won’t happen again.

      Dennis.. thanks for the comment. Always nice to hear from other spoonpluggers. Too bad it took this long for us to connect. I took a look at some of your videos, excellent! Wipers are also one of my favorites. I'd definitely like to keep in touch with you. Looks like you are in far east Tennessee. If I ever find myself in your area, I will let you know. Shoot me an email: jim@clubshell.net I'd like to chat later if you have the time.

    I like all your stuff so much that I gave it a thumbs up before I watched it - then I watched this and was mad I couldn't give it another thumbs up. "Bad" conditions just goes to show - in the famous words of another spoon plugger - ya can't catchum if your not out there.

    Excellent video. Nice Largemouth. I have a question. Do you find it more difficult to contour troll with the spoonplugs using the larger boat and motor as opposed us using a smaller boat and motor. I adk because I have a 14 foot boat with a 20hp motor, but would like to upgrade to a 16 foot boat in the future. future

      The smaller the boat, the better control. BEAM has much more of an effect than boat length, but the 2 usually go hand in hand. I'd rather have a 16ft with a 75" beam vs a 14ft with a 80" beam. There are plenty of good bigger boats with narrrow(er) beams. With a wider beam you just may have to make a few more additional passes. Thanks for watching!

    What kind of spoon are you using on the tandem rig?

    Another good trip and video Jim! Thanks for documenting and explaining your thoughts and approach and why you’re doing what you’re doing. I’m new to Spoonplugging and am soaking up everything I can find on the subject, all of Buck’s study materials, Don dickson’s videos, all of the old clips, and of course your great videos. I live in South Carolina and am particularly interested in the large mouth bass info and fishing in reservoirs ( generally lowland types) that are predominate in the southeast. I’ve had some success but have yet to land on a school of big bass.
    What type of reel and line were you using trolling on this trip? Looks like it has a line counter. What gear ratio is the reel? I have No Bo and wire line from Scott at Buck’s Baits. i bought one of his trolling rods and found a new old stock Penn 109 MF on eBay so I have the exact rig that Buck talks about. I also use a newer Abu Garcia level wind with a 6:1 gear ratio. I find the old reels difficult because the 3:1 ratio takes forever to take up line when I hook a fish on longer lines or even turning around to go back to a snag.
    Looks like you use more modern gear, braid line etc.
    Sorry this got so long. Thanks for keeping Spoonplugging alive and thanks in advance for info on your gear.

      I use a Daiwa accudepth. Very reasonably priced and works good. You can buy more expensive ones that are better if you want to. I use no bo for trolling the shallows down to about 15 ft or so. Deeper than that I'm using braid. Thanks for the comment and watching!

    So these “spoonplugs” are always contacting the bottom when you are casting them and reeling in?

    • @StructureFishing
      @StructureFishing  Год назад

      When casting a spoonplug you want to anchor or position yourself as shallow as possible (while still hitting the intended spot, drop-off). Then let the spoonplug sink, then retrieve. You always want to have the boat shallow and cast in deeper water. That way the spoonplug will bump the bottom on the retrieve. (your retrive will be "up hill")

    I've tried fishing underwater structure but I always seem to drift away and lose it after a few casts. How do you stay on top it?

    • @StructureFishing
      @StructureFishing  2 года назад

      Anchor, until the last few years, spot lock with the trolling motor. (but anchor is better). But to fish and understand structure, you need to read Buck Perry's book/materials. He is the one that coined the words and terms- structure, breaks, breaklines. All modern day fishing discoveries were made by Buck. Also, congrats on the wedding! I watched it a few days ago.

      @@StructureFishing I've tried using an anchor but it usually just drags across the bottom of the lake, I guess I need a bigger one. And thanks!

    Thanks for the reply. Can you get the same depths out of the spoonplugs with braid as you can with wire? Approximately double the stated depths of No Bo?

    • @StructureFishing
      @StructureFishing  2 года назад

      Braid will get you up to 20-25% deeper then nobo. Like Buck sez, wire will double the depths, plus an additional 10ft on a long wire line length.
