  • In this episode of Expert Voices, Sotheby’s Chairman Oliver Barker and Art Advisor Laura Paulson explore the Gerald L. Lennard Foundation Collection, to be offered across Sotheby’s Impressionist, Modern & Contemporary Auctions in New York. Passionately assembled by Gerard L. Lennard primarily in the 1970s and '80s, the collection embodies a cerebral preoccupation with the human psyche underpinned by Mr. Lennard’s intense curiosity about the motivations that drove artists to create. Included in the collection are rare examples from icons of 20th century painting, including Willem de Kooning's Untitled X, Francis Bacon's final portrait of his lover George Dyer, and the most comprehensive group of late works by Philip Guston ever to appear at auction. Proceeds from the collection will benefit the Foundation's ongoing mission.

The subject matter of his work isn't the type of material I prefer to have in my home. Perhaps in an art book on the mantel for those brave to have a look. Hanging on the wall a distorted face of a man is not simply someone seated in a chair to a child on looking. But I suppose the line of questioning from a child's incessant "whys" could lead to some interesting teaching moments as it relates to a Bacon on the wall. Bacon's darkness had no filter from mind to canvas - from canvas to living room is where I express my caution.

Belo Beatz I agree but i think some of his less violent stuff ie. triptych of Lucian Freud or the Bull fighter paintings would be dope as hell. But personally I think any francis bacon painting would be amazing if you can make the room match.

Unbelievable what passes for art these days.. There ought to be some kind of standard for art. I think these people who describe what the painting means to them are really high as a kite.
