- Ahead of her Bluesfest debut and Australian side shows, the multi-talented Tal Wilkenfeld chats to Australian Musician editor Greg Phillips about her career, gear, the new album Love Remains and how much the upcoming Australian tour and Bluesfest appearance will mean to her.
Tal Wilkenfeld is an Australian-born bass player, singer, songwriter and guitarist who rose to fame after featuring in a 40 minute jam with The Allman Brothers in New York in 2006 at the age of twenty. Word spread quickly of Tal’s remarkable talent on the bass and before long she was performing alongside artists such as Jeff Beck, Prince, Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger and Herbie Hancock. She also attracted an endorsement from respected bass manufacturer Roger Sadowsky. Her debut instrumental album Transformation featured acclaimed musicians Wayne Krantz and Keith Carlock as part of her backing band. Since then Tal has continued to collaborate with some of the world’s finest musicians and in March 2019 was featured on the cover of Bass Player magazine. Also in 2019 Tal released her debut vocal album Love Remains, further developing her multi-faceted gift.

What a genius talent Tal is! Condolences to her for Jeff's passing. Instrumental geniuses working together like magic.
Actually Jeff wasn't much of a genius at all. Quite the opposite. He killed himself.
You don't sound much of a genius either. Or actually, you are a genius on the level of Jeff Beck.

Watching this young lady playing with Jeff Beck at the 2007 crossroads was so unbelievably enjoyable for me. She is so talented. RIP Jeff.

Awesome talent who's played with countless legends. Def has a mid pacific accent after living in the US for so long. Her playing with the late Jeff Beck at Ronnie Scotts is sublime. RIP Jeff.
She is Australian so there is a slight hint of the Aussie accent. Her English has been Americanized.

Whenever I see concert footage of her she's almost always smiling. She's obviously having fun. That tells me a lot about her heart and soul. you have to love Tal.

Saw her with Beck - Colaiuta - Rebello in spring of 2009 - about same time they did the R&R HOF gig where Jimmy Page played with them - she is an amazing musician and you pretty much have to be to get on a stage with Jeff Beck !

I hope the concert levels were correct. The Live recordings pushed Jeff's guitar too loud. - Bad mix IMO. Her playing is amazing.
@@billyz5088 Not really, you have been fooled. Jeff Beck does not make any of these political decisions. She/he is very well connected due to her race. The whole thing is a deception. Her answers regarding her past were very vague, if you did not notice.

That's where I discovered her, in that 2min-smth solo in "Cause We've Ended As Lovers". I remember I was in a mcDonald's queue in Nancy, France 2009, when and where I was studying music. She changed uplifted my whole conception of what a bassist can do and share with a guitar player.
I just watched it and it was a fabulous performance! She looked so young. I also noticed Jimmy Page in the crowd watching the show.
She reminded me of the late acoustic bass player Scott Lafaro.

I've always enjoyed watching her play for how effortless she made it look. She has such a soft touch playing, even when she's digging in.
She's one of those people who is like a beam of light that just shines on the possibilities and doesn't see obstacles and just keeps going and getting there. And of course it takes loads of work, too.

@@Aldocello1 You are so close but so far from waking up. Yes, my areas of expertise are music and the Alien. I study the Alien. Its a spiritual battle between the Alien and humanity. I am actually fairly well known but the reason you have not heard of me is becuase I am not an Alien. If I were an Alien and hated humanity, I would be playing with Beck or whomever. You will not understand this at this time. You have not developed to this level yet and maybe never will. Yes, she does have talent but she is largely manufactured by the Alien power structure. She is playing a role and pushing the Alien propaganda. She is the role model, even for you but can you imagine for a young girl? Look what this L is promoting. The reason she was placed in her role, with Beck being one of them, is because she is a L, but more importantly because being an Alien. Being a L is only half way there in pushing the agenda, being an Alien is the other half. Beck is not an Alien but has worked for the Aliens his whole life and why you have even heard of him. Same with Bonamassa. You have to KNOW the Alien to be able to make any sense of the world.

I'd been aware of her bass playing for a few years and how damned great she is, but I listened to her Love Remains album for the first time this week, and was absolutely blown away by her singing and writing as well. Wonderful.

Displays a lot of wisdom that's so pertinent to having a meaningful musical dialogue. Im a 63 year old rock musician and she gifted me some knowledge maybe I forgot to remember.
I'm a 54 year old rock drummer and I love to improvise, unfortunately most "ROCK" musicians refuse to try to improvise or maybe they just can't, and they won't admit it , and they are happy to play the same crap every other band plays ,how boring ?
Yea many drummers have been bored to death, the running gag that drummers get wasted and explode is from playing the same crap over and over like blues and the singers and guitar players get all the glory and attention.
I love to jam with different drummers and improvise hard rock/metal with vocals. I'm a 65 yr old freak.

Been playing for a few months and her first professional gig is with the Allmans...WTF???? And here is me strumming away for 30 years and still can't master Smoke on the water...there is no justice...just pure genius. I'm so sorry 2020 sucked as much as it did because of covid. Hopefully 2021 will rock for her and reward her with the popularity and worldwide recognition she deserves. I feel humbled that I just get to watch her play and thank you to Jeff Beck for choosing her as that's how i found her. Really enjoyed the interview. Thanks for posting
I feel the same way - I've been playing since the early 1960s, and she just seemed to pick up a guitar and then play with all the most amazing musicians - and she is so articulate and good looking!
It's quite unusual for anyone to start playing with major acts at 16. Is she good? yes, however there are bass players on youtube that could smoke her any day of the week that simply don't have the opportunity or social network to propel them.

She is so laid back. She transforms into a different creature with a bass in hand.
I so loved and so relate to Tal describing her experiences with the "greats" as "musical conversations" from which she picks up their vibe and digests only what resonates or inspires. And now, relatively young and brilliant Tal is going through the loss of her first world-famous "champion", the one who literally believed in and introduced Tal to the world and opened the door to playing to larger audiences and limitless musical possibilities. In Tal's Facebook post about Jeff, she described him literally as a father to her. Perhaps, more of the leading artists can now be inspired to follow in Jeff's footsteps, lending a helping hand, ntroducing the world to the next generation of genius's they run across. Jeff was so, so generous that way.
All you say is true, but she definitely belongs in such company.
Well, it wasn't Jeff who opened a lot of doors or introduced her to the wider audience, it was Derek Trucks along with Vinnie Coliuta. But yeah, she's a great talent though I'm not really into the style of bass she plays - it's very mid-tempo and doesn't really carry enough energy for me.
@@dominiccrimmings6925 Hmmm. Apparently, the official backstory is that Herbie Hancock was about to launch his tour in Australia and his bass player could not make it at the last moment. Somehow, Tal was suggested and as I recall a recording of her work was sent to Herbie and as they say the rest is history.

Her talent is immense. I’m still amazed at how she climbed so fast in a genre of music that seems so closed. Overnight sensations are common in rock and pop, but in jazz, the Chick Corea’s and Herbie Hancock’s always seemed so much less accessible to young people and far more intimidating. She must have known, intuitively, that her skillset was on par with theirs. That’s very rare with someone so young.
Being young AND very skilled AND female AND very attractive helps with the ‘overnight’ thing.
i can't imagine how hard it has been for her in handling Jeffs death. I hope she's holding up well.

A class act at its best. Saw Tal first with Jeff at Eric's early Guitar Festival (video, not in person). Truly amazed at the ability to go with the music unplanned and let it flow. Beautiful playing and quite eloquent.

It's amazing how at such a very early age she managed to become a professional musician. There must be something special about how her brain is wired.
Yeah, she has self belief and self confidence which is usually instilled in the child by the parents. Then a child can do literally achieve success in almost anything they want to do. I guess, like she says, luck plays it’s part to get you to the very top.
There is also the consoderation of having been a musician in a previous life, and one continues from where they left off from the previous life. It is not just one lifetime's work

She is a very special young woman, talented, intelligent, charming, and very savvy for her young age. Her story is unique because her progress in her music career has been so rapid, in part because she managed to connect with influential artists and people in the music business who were impressed with her potential and talent. Jeff Beck generously has boosted the careers of many young musicians, and Tal is a prime example of how performing with icons like Jeff Beck and Chick Corea not only allows one to learn from masters and polish their skills but also to get the exposure which will open doors and provide new opportunities. I can only imagine how hard the recent passing of Jeff Beck has been upon her, and I am sure she will always treasure the time she spent performing with him. She is standing entirely on her own two feet now, writing and performing her own music, and I expect to see and hear much more from her in the coming years. Her success is very uplifting to witness.
