Thidwick The Big Hearted Moose By Dr Seuss - Read Aloud Bedtime Story

Thidwick the big-hearted moose lets one animal after another take up residence on his horns till he discovers the life threatening perils of extending his hospitality too far. This cautionary tale teaches the importance of personal responsibility. We teach children to share and to play fair, but what happens when others don't do that in return? This is an interesting moral dilemma that individuals and society have to deal with all the time. Dr. Seuss poses this problem in an entertaining poem, but the lessons from Thidwick can be applied to many interactions children have, especially outside the home with other children. This story does a good job of introducing how unfair it can be to take sharing to an extreme and the importance of learning to be assertive and defend yourself. Some might disagree with the message, but growing up as a pretty agreeable kid and getting taken advantage of plenty, I think it's a useful concept to start them on while they're young. Let us know in the comments if you disagree with my conclusions or if you've got anything to add. Although this little parable is short, I think it's got some important things to say. Using the will of the many to take from the few turns out not to sustain itself so well.
