I think you might need more slats under the mattress, over time the matress will slump into those gaps. Good idea to put the slats in though as you do need airflow to prevent the mattress from going mouldy.
You could see when dan was on the mattress from Underneath view , and not to be crude but when you start to make babies those slats are too far apart to take any pressure in one area , if you catch my drift 😂
Nick has the heart and mind of a saint; he's always willing to help. I wish I were more like that, but once you dig yourself into a rut, it's hard to get out. Now that you guys have seen your mistakes with building the bed frame, I look forward to seeing the finished mezzanine. Creatively spontaneous thinking and playing Jenga with wood scraps, Laura always has good ideas. You could call it a loft bed.
If you build the stairs or ladder next to the rock wall there might be ample opportunity to build drawers or a storage space under them. - Possibly even a small closet. ❤
It’s brilliant that you are learning all these skills I have been watching you from the start the highs and the lows and you have come through brilliantly keep it up
Great video again. Have you thought about putting your kitchen anywhere else other than under your sleeping area? (Smells, smoke steam etc). Your home is really coming now. Beast of luck to you both
Re kitchen under the bed, be aware also of the fine fats molecules created from cooking will affect the mattress. Guys I’d also like to suggest with the concrete floor (not sure what your intentions are with it) but if you give it a coat of of some sort of polyurethane to stop the dust it will make your experience nicer. Talking from experience. My partner spent days grinding our floor to a smooth finish before applying this coating (can’t recall can look it up later). I love our polished concrete floors. They look & feel stunning. Easy to keep clean & styish. Our weather here in central Victoria, Australia, is similar. Hot days 30-40c in summer down to12c -2c in winter. The floor helps keep temperatures inside even. You’re doing great work with a nice degree of humility. 🥰
I like the "Lady-waisted" railing that you're applying to your mezzanine floor. That used to be done a lot in the old "Queenslander" houses back about the turn of the 19th into the 20th centuries in the wooden houses that were common in Australia back then. I had one of these style of houses with a single verandah out the front. If you google old Queenslander houses, you'll see a huge variety of railings that were done. Nick has been a great help to you two and it is wonderful that you're becoming part of the community where you are. It's also good to see that you're not worried about relocating something if you're not 100% happy with how it turns out. And that is the point - it's your place, and if you are not happy with something, then you're free to do with it as you please until you "get it right". Life is a big learning curve and you should be willing to "Give it a go", adding to your skills, which until you purchased that property, were very minimal, but are growing each day As others have mentioned, it could be a problem having the kitchen area located under your sleeping area. Just a thought on this, but is it possible, with Portuguese regulations about building being what they are, for you to add another room to your Barn renovation which could then be your kitchen, which would alleviate the problem of cooking vapors...?? Looking forward to your next video.
That is interesting thanks for sharing all above we are thinking about extending but will still have kitchen inside. All should make sense soon anyway ❤️🙏
Improvement on the location and attachments are fantastic(well done). Your off-grid experience will improve so much with the barn completion, keep it up it’s looking great. ‘Keep the faith” and continue to look after each other.
Great job moving the mezanine. Love the rails. Guys please reconsider the location ofc your kitchen as seems a bit of a fire hazzard under your bed space.maybe a cofy sofa and coffee table under there and kitchen where you have open window. ❤
Also the fine fats molecules created from cooking will affect the mattress. It is not humble pie Laura and Dan, you two the most humble people I have ever come across, it is a learning curve and you know ones house is never 100% finished. Believe it or not we rented a home for 22 years and the last two years before we moved we finally got the house how we wanted it. One is constantly moving and shifting things. I hope you hear something soon about you being able to stay permanently in Portugal have you heard anything since the last time? As you say you just continue forward on your journey and I think Portugal is where you are both so happy, I see it in your eyes. You both look so much more relaxed. I think make the lounge area under the bed and the kitchen in another corner. Another lovely video and have a lovely day.
When Nick comes to help, please put the name of his channel in the episode. ‘Project Portugal’ is an amazing property and story! It would be nice to help him out! Great job this week! Also, I think the loft should be extended to one wall or the other. It will look more purposeful and add storage space!
You should put mattress direct over the tables because you have small space to the roof. I recommend to put the stairs permanent and use the space downstairs for storage.
Great progress again, I can't get over how nice it looks with the walls done. I also prefer only having the two posts. Looking forward to seeing the rails go up. 👌❤️
Hello you two, I been following you both on your journey right from the beginning. Now, with regards to your mezzanine level, you definitely need more slats under your mattress and you must future proof the mezzanine for getting things up and down, as mattress won’t last forever. So your spindles and banister rail, will need to be able to taken down to allow things like that happen in the future. ❤
Hi, looking good !! I would have done a MURPHY BED. Looks like a cabinet, pull out for bed, then put back. I saw one that looked like a bookshelf. Better if you need to go to bathroom. 😊
I think you need more slat under the mattress, can't wait to see it done & I'm so glad you moved it on the other wall, you will have so much space down stairs ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great job guy`s but I would definately put more slats in so the bed does`nt sag over time , good idea about relocating your kitchen to a safer place xx
Hi guys just a little info .. two remove yellow sweat stains from your mattress just use a spray bottle with equal parts, water and peroxide. Wait for it to dry and voilà snowy white you guys are awesome by the way ❤
Don't look now guys but you're getting pretty good at this renovation thing! The place is looking awesome! It's also great to see you two enjoying it again. Keep it up. It's gonna be epic! Cheers!
The question of the angle braces should be "are they structurally necessary?" If not, you can decide to put them in or not. If they are, put them in! :D In the USA, the maximum space allowed between the spindles is 4" and that is so a child can't get their head through and stuck. I don't know how close you are planning to space yours but you don't need them any closer than that. Has there been any change in your status for permanent residency in Portugal?
For some reason l thought the mattress was going straight onto the mezzanine floor, wont you lose height once the mattress is on? I do understand the need for ventilation under the mattreas though. Love how the little barn is coming along 😍
Hi Laura and Dan you're doing a great job. Re slats under the bed if that's 2x1 it will snap. I suggest using the IKEA slats there curved so there give when you lie (curve side up) If you haven't got a carbon monoxide alarm get one. Looking forward to seeing it finished.
Well done on the re-positioning of The mezzanine .. love the upgrade with the decorative finishes 👍👍 This was such a fun video with you two just enjoying each other’s humor … lovely to see 😊😉 DurbanSA🇿🇦
You had way too much fun smacking that mattress (why does that sound like a dodgy euphemism!?). Coming along great but you may need a support running down underneath the centre of the mattress slats..well, that's how our bed is made anyhoo. Cheers guys ♥️
Lovely show, very enjoyable. Suggestion; That big window could be a turned into a Veranda entrance to an outside breakfast room and it would get rid of that ugly block work.
If you decide in the future the slat rack elevates you too high, you can drill holes in the loft roof to provide air movement at the mattress. Looking good!
I would say without so you don't have too many obstacles or ways to bump your head or hurt yourself I think it looks great the way it is you guys are doing an amazing job
Great work Laura and Dan your wee place is coming good . The bright nights are returning am sure you both will be pleased to see some warmer bright long days . God bless good luck take care 🙏❤🫂🍀🍀😊
We dont want anyone coming on vacation ha they can take a tent... Time will tell we can always change but we didn't want it full width as we thought about it a lot and didnt work for us ❤
I would suggest a small wood burning or pellet stove that you could route out thru the wall instead of thru your roof this would avoid the need of piercing the roof all together and if it was a pellet type stove with the option to burn regular wood it would result in a greatly enhanced heating upgrade.
@@theoriginhomestead you're welcome a friend of mine just bought such a pellet stove off of Amazon for a cheap price and had it installed in a matter of minutes hope you can find one cheap as that good luck.
Enjoying your vids. 1 question. Why make that bed frame? I'd just have made a frame to locate the mattress on top of the mezzanine, as you made it there is the height of the frame and the mattress, making it tall and reducing your head room. Just a thought.
Good idea for the bed base… I think you will need more slats though, you will get dips on your mattress if not, maybe one to two in between the ones already installed. Great content guys keep it up.❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
We can't wait to show you all the finished mezzanine and big thanks to Nick @projectportugal for the help!
May I ask, why not extend the mezzanine to the wall?
Maybe 3 more slats would help enjoy your vids
I think you might need more slats under the mattress, over time the matress will slump into those gaps. Good idea to put the slats in though as you do need airflow to prevent the mattress from going mouldy.
Thanks for sharing ok at moment ❤
@@theoriginhomestead a very thin plywood board would do the trick.
@ Ply would get mouldy needs to breath thats why slats better
@@theoriginhomestead not if you drilled a few holes in ply xx
@@SueWilson-wl7lr thin ply with drilled holes. Exactly.
Kitchen under the bed ,means your mattress and sheets will absorb. The smell of whatever you are cooking
Without the extra support. Make the lounge area under the bed and the kitchen in another corner.
