    To find the intersection without a calculator, you would set the two equations equal to each other and solve for x. In this example, you would set -4x + 3 = x - 3. Then once, you get x = 1.2, you would substitute in 1.2 for x in one of the equations to solve for the y-value. (i.e...) y = (1.2) - 3 = 1.8.

    Such a clear explanation all the way through. Really helped me to understand what I was doing and why I was doing it. You lost me when you used the calculator. Wish you would have done it by hand, but video was really helpful. Now I'll try to get your final answer using pen and pencil. Thank you!

    are you sure the reciprocal of negative one is one ?

    • @geometrywithmr.j8840
      @geometrywithmr.j8840 8 лет назад +2

      It's the opposite reciprocal. The product of two perpendicular lines is -1. For example, the product of 2/3 and -3/2 is -1. They are also opposite reciprocals. The product of 1 and -1 is -1.

  • @zhangir40

    why would you not find the equation of the third side?

    • @lvhsgeometry9506
      @lvhsgeometry9506 8 лет назад +1

      +clodagh kenny you can find the third side as a way to check yourself, but you only need two of the lines to find the intersection point.

  • @andytennyson8790

    Why did you flip 1/4 to 4/1?

    • @geometrywithmr.j8840
      @geometrywithmr.j8840 9 лет назад

      +Andy Tennyson we are trying to find the equation for the line perpendicular to the side of the triangle. when 2 lines are perpendicular the slopes or opposite reciprocals. which is the fancy way of saying you flip the fraction and change the sign.

  • @jonathansaccocci6976

    helpful, yet i thought y equals mx plus b is slope intercept form

    • @geometrywithmr.j8840
      @geometrywithmr.j8840 9 лет назад

      +jonathan Saccocci y=mx+b is the slope-intercept form. I used a "modified" version of the point-slope form.

  • @anthonylee2280
    @anthonylee2280 8 лет назад

    can you anwser back fast, i have a math test tomorow, is it ok to you y=mx+b instead of y=m(x - h) + k?

    • @geometrywithmr.j8840
      @geometrywithmr.j8840 8 лет назад

      you can but it is a little more work because you have to find the y-intercept. You can also use y - y1 = m(x - x1). Use whatever method makes the most sense to you. I hope you do well on your test.
