Thanks man! I made 2 planters with off cuts, I used a pond liner instead but they look great! And everyone I showed pictures to said - oh those look professional! Nah duh?! Also, made a small jig to line up the materials and screw holes to make it repetitive.
Ok, not a lot of comments here so this might get seen. I just made these.. i had enough to do 7 "walls" of 18" high planters. So i made one complete one and that took me about 2 hours, because it takes a while to set up the jigs and get the distances. The rest go much faster after you get done with that. i used 1.5" 16ga nails (cuz that's the nailer I had) nailed from the back side., they do NOT go thru. And then did the corners (in addition) with some coretex screws and plugs. The screws really help give it some strength. I did the bottom shelf in some Azek trim 1x6 i had leftover, but you could easily use boards (or cedar). The bottom shelf really makes it square and gives it significant strength. i made another wall out of 3 12" long ones and 3 6" long ones (to make an 18" high wall) (cuz that's all i had left) and then hid that side (with the butted joints) against a wall with the other 3 18" high ones. (never to be seen). the plastic liner is a 14.1" square planter. (14" tall, 14.1" square on top). it was $20 at HD (sept 2024). I assume Lowes and Menards have the same thing. (maybe even amazon). It BARELY fits. it might be better to do with with cedar fence pickets (which are 5/8" thick) instead of cedar 1x4 (which is 3/4" thick. obviously you would want to use smaller nails) the tip about nailing the top trim square picture frame together BEFORE putting it on the planter is genius and gives you super tight joints with an even reveal. That tip alone makes the whole video worth it. I made one more planter out of 12" high walls and put the "floor" on the bottom (offset the bottom 1x4 up 3/4 of an inch instead of flush). not sure If i like that or if i want to cut the planter down. It's ok cuz it's almost winter now, i'll decide in the spring, but I had them and I wasn't throwing them away. it's a nice look, well worth the time. (oh the last 2 planters took 1.5 hours TOTAL). This well worth doing with your outrageously expensive leftovers. These are not lightweight BTW, full of dirt they are NOT going to be easy to move. Thanks Dr Decks great stuff.
This gave me some great ideas! I’m building an 800 square foot deck at my house and I have a lot of relatively decent pieces of deck boards left over (I’m using all pressure treated). I’ll be adding some planter boxes and making a dedicated cooler stand to keep a cooler in for drinks. Thanks for the content you post. I have learned so much! I’m just a homeowner that took on a massive deck project because of some of the content I learned from your channel.
Hey DR. Decks Loved the video. Always looking for new ideas for scraps. I created a deck box with a lid out of left over AZEK deck boards and 12" facia boards to store deck furniture cushions and things. Also, created a fire pit tabletop cover out of AZEK deck boards. The outer single ring is a decagon (10 sided circle) and the inner area boards go straight across. We use this area in the evenings when it is to warm for a fire but still want to be outside. We have also used the tabletop for play games with the kids. Great way to make use of the firepit when it is to warm.

You said it....make the bench. I have a million scrap pieces I don't want to throw to the dump.
This is the most heard fractions being used… 😂
