  • In a 2003 NFL week 15 game between the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers held at Giants Stadium, the Jets won 6-0. However, the talk after the game wasn't about the on-field play, but rather, the on-field conditions, because in the eyes of Steelers chairman Dan Rooney, the field was atrocious, and the Jets were not prepared to handle the snow. This is the story behind the controversy surrounding the 2003 Jets/Steelers game

they did but there was only 1 plow. for a place that doesnt really see that amount of snow its not really surprising they would keep more than that as it was the first time the jets had a snow game at that stadium which theyd been at for about 15 years. even the giants prior to the season didnt have many. then back to back weeks with snow storms. they were unprepared but its like when atlanta gets snow and the city shuts down they also only have one plow. why? cause its not that frequent of a problem

    • @tomodonovan5931
      @tomodonovan5931 2 года назад +1

I miss those days. Tackle football in the snow. Nobody ever got hurt, or concussed..
We used to play at a high school that had a separate practice field. It was next to a
home for catholic priests who preached at the church across the street where they
lived. There was a prominent catholic high school next to the church that would go
to the state championship here and there. The priests kicked us off the field. So we
found a local college nearby, and played in a big field. You would play against the
dudes you lived with in the neighborhood. There was one loudmouth Cowboys fan
who would always run his mouth. You would tackle that bastard a little harder than
the others. lol! You know the funny thing about him was the fact he hated the Steelers
with a passion. This was a little after the Super bowls where Dallas lost. But he had a
freaking picture of Jack Lambert on his wall . The one where he was lifting the weights.
Every time a girl would like me, he'd find out and start pounding at my door wanting to
fight over her. The trouble was there were about six or seven girls that did so. So he
knocked quite a bit. lol! He would never throw a punch, just antagonize you. More bark
than bite I guess. I stomped around Pittsburgh a few times as a teen. I would have loved
to have played a friendly, but firm game of tackle football against you. My cousins lived
there, and I would visit from time to time from another state. It's a friendly city. Good
football history. Lots of great players in the HOF from western Pennsylvania.

Tommy Maddox was pretty good in 2002 and the Steelers had a ton of firepower (Hines Ward, Plaxico Burress, Antwaan Randal El, Jay Riemersma) that Maddox didn't exploit as well as expected. We know how this turned out in the end though!

There was at least a little more to Zoffinger's rebuttal than the video portrays. While even the newspaper article didn't seem that interested, it shows that Zoffinger did mention the costs of such clean-up efforts. The low effort was probably a decision to save money, having already decided the field was going to end up covered in snow regardless (though it turned out otherwise.)

The NJSEA was inept here. Heavy snow is to be expected at times in the NYC/Newark area, so how the serious hell do the NJSEA and the Jets have only ONE snowplow in the joint? That's inexcusable. Rooney was right on the money. He knew the proper protocol for this. Also, thank goodness Giants Stadium switched to artificial turf before the 2003-04 league year because if the venue still had natural turf (the 3-year experiment that was the natural turf tray system was a massive failure even in good weather), this would've been an even more colossal fiasco than it already was.

You can’t talk about terrible field conditions at the Meadowlands without talking about the Slush Bowl in 1977, when the Bears beat the Giants 12-9 in OT to get into the playoffs as a wild card. The field was covered in icy slush that made things treacherous for anyone who tried to do more than walk and chew gum at the same time. Bob Thomas, the Bears kicker, had a rough time, missing at least two FGs, having an XP blow up due to a fumbled snap, and falling on his butt on every kick. But the Bears somehow moved the ball into FG range in the last minute of OT, and with a tie doing them no good, Thomas managed to get one through from about 30 yards out for the win. Oddly enough, guess who called that game for CBS? Vin Scully and Alex Hawkins, along with Johnny Morris. Hawk was two weeks away from the career-ending debacle documented so well by JG9 recently.
