The MOST CONTROVERSIAL SNOW GAME in New York Jets HISTORY | Steelers @ Jets (2003)

- In a 2003 NFL week 15 game between the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers held at Giants Stadium, the Jets won 6-0. However, the talk after the game wasn't about the on-field play, but rather, the on-field conditions, because in the eyes of Steelers chairman Dan Rooney, the field was atrocious, and the Jets were not prepared to handle the snow. This is the story behind the controversy surrounding the 2003 Jets/Steelers game

See? Shows you how proactive the Patriots were. All the Jets needed was a convict and a snow plow.
Patriots got a heating system underneath Gillette Stadium. Helps a bit also. Actually frustrated me as a kid. As I wanted a good snow game.
@@MarkVrem That particular snow game occurred in Schaefer Stadium in 82
It is rather HARD to believe that ANY NFL team north of the Mason Dixon line wouldn't have SNOW removal equipment.
they did but there was only 1 plow. for a place that doesnt really see that amount of snow its not really surprising they would keep more than that as it was the first time the jets had a snow game at that stadium which theyd been at for about 15 years. even the giants prior to the season didnt have many. then back to back weeks with snow storms. they were unprepared but its like when atlanta gets snow and the city shuts down they also only have one plow. why? cause its not that frequent of a problem
@@adawg1125 Yes I wtched the video. One plow is not enough. Atlanta is a poor example because they are way south of the MD line. They were ILL prepared, they should be able to clear the entire field in less than 15 minutes, halftime.
I mean of course it would be the Jets lmfao
@@skippythealien9627 I have a friend from NYC that calls them the GETS because they always GETS screwed usually by themselves!! LOL
seems pointless to be prepared for an event that happens once 20 years you dont need a chicago coat until you go to chicago
The Jets was the Butt Fumble of snow removal as well. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Let’s be real, the jets learned from the dolphins , mud bowl and all.
Lol. Oh man. They'll never EVER live the Butt Fumble down. It'd take ten consecutive Super Bowl wins to erase it, and that ain't happening.
Thanks tree.
Pittsburgh actually comes out on top in all this. They get the 11th pick in front of the Jets 12th and Buffalo 13th. Allowing them to draft Big Ben. Chad Pennington missed alot of games because of injury and Bledsoe had a down year in 2003.
Reminds me of the time an Oakland A's game got rained out despite the rain having stopped hours ago -- because the grounds crew forgot to put tarp on the field when it was raining in the afternoon.
That was in 2014, I believe it was early in the season against the Mariners.
@@vdubproductions2646 2014 sounds right. I was thinking somewhere in that general range. And yeah, definitely early season and Seattle sounds right.
That's got nothing on the time a Cubs-Brewers game got rained out despite it never actually raining that day
@@Phateagle262 when did that happen? That is ridiculous that they postponed the game with no rain
@@vdubproductions2646 2017...I remember the Brewers were justifiably pissed off about that. Cubs fan here but I can't defend that at all. It was May, the Cubs are Wrigley's only tenant, and afaik the field was in good condition...versus the incident JG9 covered a few months ago when the Brewers had to postpone a home game against the Yankees bc the field was too torn up from a Packers-Broncos game, the likely beginning of the end of the Pack's Milwaukee games.
An additional running back who had a huge day running without scoring a TD in the snow...Jamal Lewis in the Browns Bills 2007 snow game. Lewis ran for 163 and added one catch for 11 yards without finding the endzone in a Browns 8-0 shutout. Phil Dawson somehow hit a 49 yard FG in this game in probably one of the top 3 worst snow conditions games I've ever seen.
Bills fan here. I remember that game. I wasn't even mad about lol
To be fair, Curtis Martin, who was from Pittsburgh, always had big games against the Steelers both as a Jet and a Patriot.
I could understand the Tennessee Titans,Dallas Cowboys, or some other warm weather team not having snow equipment. But in New York, where it snows pretty regularly?
Let’s be real, the jets learned from the dolphins , mud bowl and all.
Blame the ownership. 😒
BOTH the Steelers and the Jets COMBINED are WAY BELOW a 39.6 and should SPIKE the football into the ground on EVERY single OFFENSIVE play.
My goodness. When I was growing up (in Pittsburgh) we used to WAIT for days like this to go and play football.
I miss those days. Tackle football in the snow. Nobody ever got hurt, or concussed..
We used to play at a high school that had a separate practice field. It was next to a
home for catholic priests who preached at the church across the street where they
lived. There was a prominent catholic high school next to the church that would go
to the state championship here and there. The priests kicked us off the field. So we
found a local college nearby, and played in a big field. You would play against the
dudes you lived with in the neighborhood. There was one loudmouth Cowboys fan
who would always run his mouth. You would tackle that bastard a little harder than
the others. lol! You know the funny thing about him was the fact he hated the Steelers
with a passion. This was a little after the Super bowls where Dallas lost. But he had a
freaking picture of Jack Lambert on his wall . The one where he was lifting the weights.
Every time a girl would like me, he'd find out and start pounding at my door wanting to
fight over her. The trouble was there were about six or seven girls that did so. So he
knocked quite a bit. lol! He would never throw a punch, just antagonize you. More bark
than bite I guess. I stomped around Pittsburgh a few times as a teen. I would have loved
to have played a friendly, but firm game of tackle football against you. My cousins lived
there, and I would visit from time to time from another state. It's a friendly city. Good
football history. Lots of great players in the HOF from western Pennsylvania.
This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made a video about another Jets home game, this one in the 1981 Playoffs at Shea Stadium, in which the Jets had to go searching for goalposts.

I was at this game. The crowd chanted 6-8 after the Jets won and were so happy and they pelted a Steelers fan who had no shirt on. I also remember George Bush coming on the Jumbo Tron talking about how we captured Saddam.
Jets fans can be real assholes but I do love them because they can be real assholes.
Good times, good times 😎😎😎.,
I grew up with Curtis Martin in Pittsburgh and when we were in high school we’d play football outside in the snow almost every Sunday.
He was a beast even back then.
I went to Plum. Graduated in '99. Woodland Hills used to DESTROY us.
@@Swim2TheMoon I knew him when he went to Dice, we used to play tackle football at Frick and St. Filomena’s in SQ Hill
@@uncledarthy3783 Allderdice, that's right. Who the hell was I thinking of at Woodland Hills?
This is the only Jets game I’ve ever been to. I was 12 years old about to turn 13 on December 20th and my dad got free tickets through his job. There was a few dudes in front of us shirtless chugging a bottle of whatever liquor they had, screaming like maniacs. It was awesome. We actually left at halftime because my pops was over it I guess. Made it home to watch the rest of the game the go play another football game outside in the snow. Fuxkin aweomeeeee.
But, never knew this. Thanks for the dope video!!
Steelers are fine ones to talk. Somehow, before the 1975 AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME the 3 Rivers Stadium turf conviently iced over only outside the numbers. Basically nullifying the Raiders best offensive weapons. Belitnekoff and Branch.
That would make sense if the Steelers didn't have 2 HoF WR's of their own. You and the rest of the Raiders sound like idiots every time you cry about it.
Cope harder.
Dan Rooney should have been more concerned about the constant horrible conditions at his home place Heinz Field. It has always been torn up even in good weather

@@dustinsindledecker154 a good place for fans that like to debate and make a lot of hypothetical battles of who and when was the best in the best Era, and "when the game was for men" type talk lol
Are saying football is only for men, alot of women like football don't disrespect them, but other than that you are correct.
@@dustinsindledecker154 no, alot of the older dudes, use that phrasing when comparing the old eras to Today's game
I'm not surprised that the Steelers threw so much in this game, as that's what they did in 2002-2003. Tommy Maddox was pretty good in 2002 and the Steelers had a ton of firepower (Hines Ward, Plaxico Burress, Antwaan Randal El, Jay Riemersma) that Maddox didn't exploit as well as expected. We know how this turned out in the end though!
Anyway, this was the first game "NFL Primetime" showed when the week 15 highlight package began, and my recording was late, so I was missing a few minutes.
I absolutely love not only snow games, but bad weather games. Those games put a premium on running the ball instead of airing it out.
I lived in NYC when this storm hit. Was going to a bar on the Upper West Side for Lunch and saw a Cop Car stuck in the snow. I pushed them out of the snow, they drove off, didn’t even say thanks, and I grabbed a burger.
I don't remember this game, but I do remember earlier in the season when Cowher complained about playing in San Francisco on Monday night, then playing in Cleveland the week after. The Steelers were the only team in 2003 to play a road Monday night game followed by another road game.
But hey I enjoyed 6-10 that year, because of what happened next:
"With the 11th pick of the 2004 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers select Ben Roethlisberger, quarterback, Miami University." - Paul Tagliabue
There was at least a little more to Zoffinger's rebuttal than the video portrays. While even the newspaper article didn't seem that interested, it shows that Zoffinger did mention the costs of such clean-up efforts. The low effort was probably a decision to save money, having already decided the field was going to end up covered in snow regardless (though it turned out otherwise.)
Still poor planning.
Unfortunately, this is the first NFL game I ever remember watching
If FedEx Field only had one snowplow when snow like that was forecast, it would have been a controversy. Maryland isn't as used to snow as the New York metropolitan area is.
The fact that there was only one plow at this game was inexcusable. If it had kept snowing, the fact that it was a snow game would have been one thing, but if the snow stopped before halftime, they should have at least gotten the field cleared.
I was at this game. No shirt!! Still have the pics. Made friends with the 50 people that actually attended.
I watched this game live, and I swear there was a Steelers WR who got hurt trying to chase down a Maddox pass that went out of the endzone, but you couldn't tell where the endzone was due to the snow. The WR dived for a catch and slammed into some equipment or something like 5 yards out the back of the endzone,.
Seeing Hines Ward out there takes me back.
It was revenge for the Mud Bowl in the 1982 playoffs. But it was against the wrong team. Typical same old Jets! I stand with Rooney on this one. I grew up in the NY area and the people in charge of snow removal act like such Prima Donnas when it comes to snow removal in December!
I was at this game actually lol. Fun to watch, but tough to sit through, with snow at your feet.
Me too
The BETTER question-was The Home Depot open?
Nope. Blue Laws in Bergen County prohibit Home Depot from being open.
I was at that game and it snowed way more than 7 inches.. way way more
The NJSA was like. “We did this last week, we didn’t want to do it again this week”
2:53 So True!😁
I love it when you make that reference. Who knows; that quote can easily be a spinoff channel.
It was sleeting from about the end of halftime until maybe 10 min left in the 3rd quarter.
Ironic that the next event on CBS was a skiing competition.
I really enjoyed this game, no matter what the circumstances were.

2003 is the most recent losing season by the steelers to date.
As a Steelers fan who witnessed the Monday night dolphins Steelers game, the one 3 years after this that ended 3-0, where punts actually stuck directly in the turf like javelins, the Steelers probably shouldn’t complain about field conditions.
There wasn't much they could do about that...terrible example chief
As a Bengals fan who detests the Steelers, I respect the Rooney family and the rebuttal from Zoffinger was trash
The damndest thing was just a few miles south there was no snow at all.
My dad actually worked for Zofenger and said he’s a terrible person so this doesn’t surprise me
In our defense: Not our stadium.
Not a fan of snow games but I love games when it rains heavily those are pretty fun to watch.
I love snow games we need more teams not getting rid of it so fast
Too bad the Minnesota Vikings play in a enclosed stadium these days, never to enjoy a "snow game" ever again. ☃️
@@luisreyes1963 skol totally agree you have the best home field advantage possible and we don’t use it
Let's go back to 1972 AFC championship game. From the numbers out Three Rivers Stadium's field was iced over. The Raiders were a bomb pass offense, the Steelers run between the tackles. Rooney should've just shut up.
There's always something weird going on with the Jets..... lol 😆
Something weird has been going on for the jets for the last 50 years.
Another episode of The Jets Being The Jets
@@dustinsindledecker154 meh , from 97 to bout 2013 , the jets were constant contenders. If the patriots were not in the same division, we would have countless division titles and at least one Super Bowl.
Let’s be real, the jets learned from the dolphins , mud bowl and all.
@robert Lawrence yeah maybe you had a good few season during that time but mostly it wasnt that great.
the Jets most likely believed that they could play better in the snow.
Steelers to the DEATH, but Curtis Martin is the best player you've never heard of...
The NJSEA was inept here. Heavy snow is to be expected at times in the NYC/Newark area, so how the serious hell do the NJSEA and the Jets have only ONE snowplow in the joint? That's inexcusable. Rooney was right on the money. He knew the proper protocol for this. Also, thank goodness Giants Stadium switched to artificial turf before the 2003-04 league year because if the venue still had natural turf (the 3-year experiment that was the natural turf tray system was a massive failure even in good weather), this would've been an even more colossal fiasco than it already was.
The NFL misses Dan Rooney
I'm giving the Jets a pass on this because it's far less important than how they got screwed by the Dolphins making them play the 1982 AFC Championship game in a swamp by not covering the field during a downpour the day before that game.
You can’t talk about terrible field conditions at the Meadowlands without talking about the Slush Bowl in 1977, when the Bears beat the Giants 12-9 in OT to get into the playoffs as a wild card. The field was covered in icy slush that made things treacherous for anyone who tried to do more than walk and chew gum at the same time. Bob Thomas, the Bears kicker, had a rough time, missing at least two FGs, having an XP blow up due to a fumbled snap, and falling on his butt on every kick. But the Bears somehow moved the ball into FG range in the last minute of OT, and with a tie doing them no good, Thomas managed to get one through from about 30 yards out for the win. Oddly enough, guess who called that game for CBS? Vin Scully and Alex Hawkins, along with Johnny Morris. Hawk was two weeks away from the career-ending debacle documented so well by JG9 recently.
I remember watching this and being relieved when the Steelers lost this pointless game. Cause we were one step closer to either Rivers or Roethlisberger!!
Yeah one of the few times I was happy we lost.
is anyone surprised that the Jets weren't prepared to do something?
How did George Zoffinger kept his job after that response? That was a face palm moment and he knew he messed up in failing to keep the field somewhat clean. I don't know why NFL teams keep building open roof stadiums in cities that get bad weather like I don't know SNOW.
When was the Giants game?
The Steelers got the better end of the deal, anyway. This defeat, and finishing 6-10 eventually led to them drafting a quarterback named Ben Roethlisberger. Hadn't had a losing season since 2003.

He sure was a great rusher
Yeah he wasted alot of years on some crummy jets teams.
@@teen_laqueefa why the hesitancy about putting him in the Hall of Fame though?
I’d say Barry Sanders has a bigger complaint
This almost seems funny to me. How many teams have had questionable field conditions that gave them the advantage? I think of Candlestick park and the way the grass between the hash marks and sideline was twice as long as the center of the field whenever they hosted a team that had speed at wide reciever.
I also seem to recall the 49ers and Raiders would have soggy fields even when it wasn’t raining.
...but it didn't effect Jerry Rice? Hmmm
@@johncianciarulo6848 of course it did, but it wasn't as big of a factor because he didn't rely on soeed alone to get open since he was such a great route runner. Plus they ran so many slants... You don't have to take my word for it there was plenty of talk about it back then.
I thought I was clicking on a Hockey game.
"...Wins and losses are what owners care about." Mmmm, not entirely sure about that one. Imhotep McCaskey might have a different take on that topic. But that's for another time.
But what if they won? Would he still have been complaining?
Cry me a river, the Steelers are notorious for manipulating their field like letting the sidelines at 3 Rivers ice up when playing teams that relied on speed and allowing Hienze field to become a mud pit to take advantage of the likes of Jerome Bettis and other straight ahead runners they've had over the years
And that my friend is called home field advantage

Maybe the NFL should not schedule any outdoor games when a snowstorm is going to hit the area. Of course schedules are released in the spring and no one knows what the weather is going to be in seven months.
so put every team inside a dome? screw that.
Weather games are one of the best parts of the sport why would you want to take that away if anything all stadiums should have to be outdoor
