For those criticising mixing parts, you should have been around in the early 80’s. Parts weren’t cheap and some proper Frankenstein bikes got put together and they worked fine. The designs around now are a result of trial and experimentation.
I know I cobbled together my fair share of bikes because my family couldn't afford one. I had to pick parts where people threw away their old bikes and put together my own.
My first bike was a Raleigh Commando that my dad ‘refurbished’. He painted it with the same blue paint he used on the coal house door 🤣 It had those Cowhorn handlebars as well. It looked a bugger but it was the bike I learnt to ride on so served it’s purpose.
You can clamp the stays at brake bridge / seat stay bridge with a band hose clamp ( jubilee clip for Brits) to reduce chance of cracking abrazed joint.
My best mate had one of these when they came out when we were kids. They were like a prototype Mountain Bike at the time in hindsight, we were all still riding Raleigh Burners and Puch Magnum BMX bikes. It looked like a mesters bike compared to ours, he was a tall lad though. His was black with some green bomber graphics on it. Interesting build and I never realised before these had those backward dropouts.
Be interesting to see that! How many bikes do you have in your personal collection if you don’t mind me asking? I buy stuff to refurbish and end up keeping some of them, it gets addictive doesn’t it.
As long as someone is going to repair the brake bridge you may consider them adding some cantilever brake mounts and cable stops... if you lived in my neighborhood I would take care of it for you for a pint of good ale.. Cheers from Western NY State..
It is a thought I've had. I probably have some "spare" mount knocking around somewhere.... I'd just have to fashion up a jig to hold them in the right spot.
@@MonkeyShred Thanks! I have bike single speed but I think the frame width i just too small, as i might need a 120mm disc brake hub and that maybe be diff to get, say for old 5 or 6 speed. SUNXC are still making 120mm 6 speeds but not disc compatible. Oh well!
I wouldn’t worry too much about cracking a weld, I’d be more concerned about kinking or deforming a chain stay or seat stay. If your getting the rear end welded to strengthen it why not go the whole hog and get a couple of “V” brake mounts welded in place like the front fork? Remember old Raleigh bomber callipers were atrocious at the best of times.
I turn the nut on one side but it reacts equally. Don't worry. If onky one side had moved the frame alignment would have been massively out. 😂 Banana frame.
Christian Vogt he could but it would have cost more than the whole bike is worth, on top of that stainless would have stood out next to chrome because the colour is different.

I mean, that's how mountain bike's evolved. Singlespeed coaster brakes, need more gears.... stick on road parts. Voila.

Like the spreader idea. Looking into swapping a single speed cruiser to geared.

I've got the black one too. I want to properly restore that one though.

@@FrancoDX erm... It's probably around 20 😅 I got in to the habit of seeing a bargain and buying it. So many projects to do.
Haha, I’ve had to hire a little lock-up because I ran out of room. Always love watching your projects so keep buying them! 🙂
Just picked up a "Tyler" single speed coaster brake bike from a dump, Gonna give it a nice refresh and make it a rim brake bike.
Awesome. Good luck with the build.
Can't wait to see this beast finished i love the older bikes but this will be something special can't wate 😆😊
Thanks! It'll be done very soon hopefully

Nice, all I wanted too know is here, and much more I thought. Thaks
Glad to help!
nice! i used a jack to spread the rear bars... good idea with the threaded nuts n bolts - I'm also looking to convert my chopper to 7 speed
Sweet. Good luck with that.
It must have been a pita to fit the hub no? since one can not simply slide it into place anymore?
It's a little bit more difficult sure but the derailleur adapter slides off with the hub so it isn't too bad.

I am thinking about that... I just need to make up some sort of jig to hold them in place. For now I have a Dia Compe MX1000 caliper
Plans to strip the paint and get all that glorious chrome shining?
Plan is to get all the blue vinyl off yes, polish up the chrome as best as possible but it's still going to be rusty in places.
Sakae Ringyo crank set… nice. Is that one of the ones with the 118 mm BCD?
I can't remember the exact number but it is the SR ONLY size.
Would it be easier (although perhaps not prettier) to mount a full housing cable?
Yeah you could do! It would need to be cable tied to the frame and job done.
Very useful vid. Thanks.
If you were setting it up as a 1x could you run the cable in an outer all the way from the shifter to the mech?
I don't see why not.
Thats currently working on my Triumph
how many speed can i put when the rear is 139mm?
139mm? Not sure. It depends on the wheelset you put in there and the freehub that is on that wheelset.
I noticed that you only stretched out on one side. It would be much better if you stretch other side too to reduce the risk of cracking the weld.

That top tube looks so strange
what is the name for your hanger?
*RD hanger
There should be a link to it in the description
You couls ask a metalworker if he could rebuild the broken seatstays out of Stainless steel.
Christian Vogt he could but it would have cost more than the whole bike is worth, on top of that stainless would have stood out next to chrome because the colour is different.
Roadbike derailleur with a mountainbike rear wheel? 🧐Chain tension is not as good as it should be
I'm impressed you watched the whole video in 5 minutes 😂
I have road and mtb parts on a cross bike. It's super clean. I've done it on a hybrid too.
я думал только у нас могли перья гнуть, чтоб фривил запихать в сингл
it works in a pinch...pardon the pun
