The hilarious part is that he complains about Millennials but I wonder if he realizes that Millennials are at most age 40 now? Most are in their 30s. At least half the generation had childhoods that were analog.
Ridley Scott and these other old Hollywood filmmakers need to realize it's 2021 not 1981. It's not the 80's anymore where you just had a TV with a couple channels and movie theater to watch content. In 2021 you got streaming, Video games, Twitch, RUclips, Tiktok etc, there so many things these days to grab peoples attention. If you don't have something that isn't pre-established or is groundbreaking visually or narratively it's gonna get lost in the shuffle.
True, but still, 40 years later Hollywood is desperate to repeat creativity explosion of 80s with endless remakes, reboots and sequels. Ridley was part of truly golden age of cinema, and i sort of understand him, but yes, he is little bit out of touch
I don't know what he wants from the audience, I personally didn't know this movie existed. And I see myself as someone that knows what is going on in the world of movies. I think he should blame the marketing campaign team, because I don't think people are even aware of this movie, and they didn't do a good job of making this movie known to the public.
What’s funny, is I just read an Interview with Ridley Scott talking about the new Hulu Alien show, where he said this show will NEVER be as good as his film lol And that’s a project he’s an executive producer on lol So his attitude here doesn’t surprise me. He’s just an old man that doesn’t care anymore.
No, he definitely cares...he's just old and eccentric. A lot old people eventually stop giving a damn what other people think of them and start saying whatever is on their mind with no filter.
Millennials are anyone between the ages of 38 and 24. People just seem to use that phrase because it's the only one they know and they're too old to bother learning the actual name for the generation they're talking about (Gen Z). @UC2hHSvDNrLYNACWGZPF1ZSQ Millennials are usually between 1981 and 1996 however some consider 1997 to be Millennials as well. Others use the term Zilennials. As they may not be considered "proper" Millennials but they can't be considered GenZ either. Zilennials range from 1997 to 1999. It's an awkward stage between generations where they are able to relate to two generations but not exclusively to one.
Hello John and crew from Germany. I liked "The Last Duel", but there was almost no marketing campaign for this movie in Germany. Ridley Scott is an old alpha male who can not stand his own failure and does not allow other directors to succeed. Scott has had such a vicious argument with Jim Cameron for decades over his success with "Aliens" ('I give a f ** k about the Alien Queen'). Scott's two alien prequels are a furious attempt to devalue Cameron's Alien Queen.
@@renatenha OP is making an assumption, which means what he said isn't necessarily true. The movie might have failed financially, but it's a great film, so Ridley did not fail.

A film about SA and two white bro’s fighting with swords about it? Uh okay. Seems, shit. But even so there was no marketing anywhere and it was super hard to find.
@@FrancisFabricates Well, i watched it. I thought it was a fantastic movie, Oscars material. But if you only watch marvel movies you will find it a bit boring and tedious. If you like , great acting and great stories, watch the movie.
Dour and long medieval period epics in a pandemic just aren't gonna scream box office gold right now. Studios have every right to produce these films, but some genres should temper expectations for big screen returns at the moment
Well I think he is right that movies like this could have been big hits in decades past but now melodramas are more of a sit at home and stream it kind of thing. We reserve the theatrical experience more for movies that benefit the most from the big screen and big sound system. I don't think it's a short attention span issue.
I find the short attention span comments weird in the age of binge watching anyway. There’s no shortage of young folk who can sit for 4+ hours at a time watching a scripted drama.
Its because now you have streaming at your fingertips, and going to the movie its not just expensive but actually dangerous (because of the pandemic). So people just go out and do that for the big movie events. Drama, comedy, romance, are transitioning to the smaller screen
@@xqueenfrostine 1. How much of that are they still on their phone though? 2. Shows are structured better for longer viewing. I can sit and watch 4 episodes of a TV show, no problem, but sometimes feel like a two hour movie at home is too much of a commitment.
This movie flopped because no one knew about it coming out, and it was competing with a stacked lineup for the October season. I literally had no idea what this movie was until all this noise about those dang kids and their cellular telephones started up. Even with a movie I don't care about like Tenet, I knew about that movie for two months straight before it came out because the marketing department realized that if they want younger people to see it, then maybe they should meet young people where they are and advertise it on social media and RUclips. I don't think I've ever seen an ad for this movie, and I'm their target demo.
What Ridley Scott said makes me not wanna support him and go see House of Gucci, I mean I’ve been so excited for the movie but idk if I wanna support a director who blames his audience for his movie failing
He's acts like such a grandpa. How can someone, with that kind of technical movie making knowledge, and probably wisdom that comes with time, can't see that times change constantly?
the most popular genre of the 80s was star wars, aliens, blade runner, indiana jones, terminator, karate kid, ghost buster etc etc. actions movies. most old school directors would have said exactly the same thing then about these kinds of movies too. so riddle scott saying this today is just grumpy old man symptom. its more covid then anything
Just finished watching it tonight it's a great movie but Hollywood doesn't have the balls to remake it and if they did they would ruin it by trying to modernise it or put realism in it , Personally I would turn it into an anthology and have it directed by Guillermo del Toro
The other reason is because The Last Duel was released on October month which went up against Halloween Kills and Venom 2. October month is all about horror movies
Im a millennial too but I absolutely agree with scott. More ppl went to watch soulless films like halloween kills and shang chi and venom 2 multiple times rather than give the last duel a shot. I think he also means that ppl nowadays have such reduced attention spans because of comic book films that they cant sit through a somber film like the last duel. I highly recommend watching it tho its fantastic. Maybe ppl should not jump on the “lets hate ridley scott bandwagon” just because he made an comment in the heat of the moment. He is a legendary director with a fantastic eye and ppl should be respectful of his views.
Before everybody attacks me, i really liked shang chi, except for the all the stupid dragon and soul sucking demon crap and CG overkill that MCU films need to fix. The characters, performances and fight sequences were great. But this is not a film that i will remember, unlike the last duel which i absolutely could not stop thinking about
Or MAYBE people were just not in the mood for a period piece about a rape case, during a shitty historical period where the pandemic isn't the only awful thing going on at once? Especially considering the film had ZERO marketting? The Last Duel will be just as good on Netflix, when people want to go out it's to have fun with their friends and they have a limited budget.
@@sahilsehdev4235 Yep. I loved the actors in the movie, but the third act of Shang Chi overindulged in CGI and lost any sense of realism. It was more like The NeverEnding Story (or the Chronicles of Narnia) than anything else. I wanted to love the movie, but the third act just didn't do it for me.
The problem is that the soulless films as you call it are appealing to the general audience. The biggest problem with his take is that he seemingly is blaming people for having a preference. People, especially during a dower fucking pandemic ruining all our lives, don't want to see a somber film. It isn't about attention spans. It's about knowing what people want to see in the current market. The biggest issue I have with Ridley's comment is that he should know the landscape of the industry as it stands now and should know everything that is affecting the movie industry now, but he seems to not understand. Historical movies have been historically hit or miss over the last 10 years and usually don't garner as much moviegoers even outside of a pandemic year. The Last Duel also had very minimal marketing. I actually only ever heard about this film when Ridley Scott began slandering an entire generation because "wah my movie didn't do well". With movies like the Last Duel, the main boosts in viewing is usually when it gets released digitally or on bluray. Also, the month they released this film was very stacked with movies that are generally appealing so it was always going to bring in less audience. Bringing it back to my point about preferences. Who gives a shit if more people want to see the next Halloween movie? The guy knows people are interested in that sort of movies, now. He knew his random medieval historical movie wouldn't be at top of the list on everyone's watchlist. For fucks sake, he knows how much people like continuations and recontextualization of older movies since he made 2 arguably trash Alien prequels that was memed on by everyone, but they still made decent money. Why the fuck is he complaining about a market he wholeheartedly abused to get more money twice? I respect the guy's vision for cinema and artful works, but there's zero justification in his views of slandering an entire generation (the wrong generation btw, the fucking moron) for the failure of a movie that he and the studio legitimately just didn't do enough research and marketing for it to succeed. Biggest problem I have with the older legendary directors and artists is that they refuse to change and just choose to shit on the younger generations because they just aren't getting as much pull as they did before. Let people watch what they wanna watch. If you want more people to watch your movies and make more money off those people, make something generally appealing. If you want to stick to your artistic visions and create more artistic films where your core audience will appreciate the work of art even if the general public may not necessarily flock to it, then you have to be fine with it making less money and having less people watch it. The choice between general market appeal vs artistic works exists within every creative market.
He's absolutely right. The biggest movies in the 70s were things like The Godfather, and now it's dumbing down stuff like Marvel or whatever. For a generation that claims to be so much smarter than boomers and gen x, they sure do consume a lot of idiotic entertainment aiming for the lowest common denominator.
Do boomers forget that Millennials are adults in their 20's and 30's? Also there a bit of a pandemic going around and people (at least in my country) are still skeptical about going out, not for a fucking mediocre movie anyway. Maybe he should've marketed it on those "fucking cellphone" then more people would've seen it, I for one hadn't heard of this movie until I saw him talking shit
Ironically, you could say that this is Ridley's fault. He turned down directing Dune, which ultimately led to David Lynch taking it on. And because David Lynch's version was such an epic disaster, we had to wait 40 years for another adaptation. If he'd done it, we likely would have been pleased with the result and he wouldn't have had his movie crash into a Dune reboot.
Disney screwed the marketing for The Last Duel. It was a movie that needed a huge targeted campaign to attract people to a medieval drama with a heavy subject. Disney botched that. It was just ONE week at my local theater and there was no way to know if I didn't check the new releases every week.
Disagree with one thing, you can absolutely be a brilliant artist and a crazy person. In fact, being a genius artist and crazy tend to go hand-in-hand.
He's kinda right...it's just the way he said it. True film buffs will find a way to see The Last Duel while your average movie goer today will have no idea this film even exists. If this came out 15 - 20 years ago it probably done ok to very good. The landscape is just so vastly different. And sadly medieval movies with knights and castles are no longer making good money at the box office. We may not see one on this scale for a decade.
Should have marketed and not spend money on actors that had no passion for the project. They give it their all, but the subject matter and character development is not there. Zoomers and Millennials flocked to Dune in comparison. Not as much as superhero movies but they still went there. And it was almost half the budget of Eternals and was stunning.
@@Flufferz626 I can't believe Marvel gave a big budget to a indie director. She was new to superhero movie. Plus Eternals comics was a challenge to turn into movie. Kelvin Feige drop her in the deep without aid.
Yeah I can't believe you're the only one to mention this in this comment section. The viewing habits have changed today. No one's gonna see a mid-budget drama in theaters. That is partly the fault of young kids because of their comic book or bust preference. 90s kids like me went to watch dramas like A Few Good Men and Cast Away. So Ridley Scott actually has a point.
In the food industry we are taught to disagree with words with positive connotation. It's not boring it just moves at a different pace than one you are used to.
The movie was delayd twice or three times. The promotion always show same actors in same scene. Also movie is released by independend studio in Netherlands and both parts of Belgium. In this case by the Frence tag of Belgium studio. Future BD and DVD release wil get no extra's. Ridley Scott should do something about that.
The last duel was amazing, and people should have go and watch it, that was the type of films that we don't see now, with big budget and not related at all to CB movies (I love CB movies) and a film with batman, Burne, Kylo Ren, and the white princess/ favorite sicopat, flopping it's bad.
Big problem with this movie is the terrible marketing. I never saw a single trailer for it in theaters. I never saw ANY sort of advertising for it at all ANYWHERE. How are people supposed to know this movie even exists?
I don't think Ridley Scott is entirely wrong. I don't see movies like "Gladiator" or "Good Will Hunting" attracting that many audience if they came out today. We have a very self-centred audiences nowadays. And they have grown up on plethora of entertainment choices: Tick Tok, Instagram, tens of thousands of streaming services. You blink and you miss. They don't even have that thought of "lets go support this movie". Definitely appreciated Kim's opinion on this one. Instead of lashing out on old man Ridley, she explained where he might be coming from.
I came home today and wondered why the house was so quiet. Then I found out all the kids have gone out to watch Spiderman. One of those rare events where they all agreed on something.....
I saw exactly one trailer for the Last Duel. That was a preroll with Dune. No online marketing was shown to me of this movie after that or even before it whatsoever.
I would have gone to see the Last Duel if I had known when it was coming out. But sadly poor marketing of the film and release dates definitely affected its success.
To a large degree, I agree with Mr. Scott! Look around today, young people can't function without their phones, go to a restaurant and they don't talk to each other, they're too busy STARING INTO THEIR PHONES! Ever see one without a phone NO! Their phone is THEIR LIFE, they're HYPNOTIZED by them!
Honestly The Last Duel was my 2nd fav film of the year behind The French Dispatch. Probably tied with Dune as my 2nd fav. Its a real shame the film didn't do better because its probably gonna age well with repeat viewings
I can't understand how a boss, executive, producer, or director blames the fans or customer for not buying a bad product. Something seems really off with that.
I’m 31 and I really liked the film. But it had a lot of things working against it, and it had nothing to do with cellphones or millennials or whatever’s. -It’s a historical film, which tend to be hit or miss in terms of making money these days. -The marketing for it was REALLY lackluster. -It was released in the same time period when Venom 2, No Time to Die, and Halloweeen Kills were all coming out, which made it hard to find an audience. -Some people still don’t want to go to theatre due to COVID. -Etc. Ridley is way off the Mark here unfortunately.
What is confusing is that any of them genuinely thought a grim medieval drama that is 153 minutes long would be successful at a budget of $100 million. This wouldn't have been successful even in non pandemic times, but in pandemic times, there was no chance of it making money. Its not like its a big adventure medieval movie like Gladiator or Robin Hood. Its a medieval movie about rape and justice.
What I find hilarious is that Ridley Scott incorrectly refers to the latest generation of millennials, when the latest generation, gen-z, aren't millennials. As a tail-end (2nd wave) millennial in my twenties, I don't mind being grouped with gen-z since the age difference is less than two years for me (depending on who you ask, I could be Gen-z, but no can even agree on the year the new generation begins), but I don't think the first wave Millennials, who are pushing 40, would appreciate his comment.

The movie was really good and wasn’t even his fault it failed! It was the fucking studio and marketing team that failed this movie.
out of touch? Are you serious? The movie was fantastic, topical and very well written and acted... the marketing faild here because it's a tough movie to sell.
But that guy is NOT out of touch, at least when his work is concerned... Case in point: House of Gucci.

Ahh blaming millennials, such a lazy classic lol. Do they forget we in our late 20s to early 40s?
"Millennial" is basically a slur for young people among a certain segment of the population (make of that what you will). They'll probably still be calling teenagers "millennial snowflakes" 10 years from now.
How much advertising did the film do? Don't remember hearing much of it.
The issue is this was sharing cinemas with 3 comic book movies,James Bond and a Halloween movie. Millenials aren't the issue.
Remember when Ridley Scott blamed Blade Runner 2049 for being 20 minutes too long? He literally believe that Blade Runner would've double its money if it's 20 minutes shorter

Yep, its why no shows ratings will ever be a high as they where in the 50s, you dint got 3 shows to choose from any more.
I don't know what he wants from the audience, I personally didn't know this movie existed. And I see myself as someone that knows what is going on in the world of movies.
I think he should blame the marketing campaign team, because I don't think people are even aware of this movie, and they didn't do a good job of making this movie known to the public.
I just seen this movie 2 weeks ago and loved it, had no idea it existed either.
Seniles blame younger people for a lot of things.
@@keefriff99 I'm saying he doesn't care what people think of his opinions.

Millennials are anyone between the ages of 38 and 24. People just seem to use that phrase because it's the only one they know and they're too old to bother learning the actual name for the generation they're talking about (Gen Z). It's an awkward stage between generations where they are able to relate to two generations but not exclusively to one.
Should blame Disney for barely marketing it and throwing it in a crowded month
Hello John and crew from Germany. I liked "The Last Duel", but there was almost no marketing campaign for this movie in Germany. Ridley Scott is an old alpha male who can not stand his own failure and does not allow other directors to succeed. Scott has had such a vicious argument with Jim Cameron for decades over his success with "Aliens" ('I give a f ** k about the Alien Queen'). Scott's two alien prequels are a furious attempt to devalue Cameron's Alien Queen.
Wow I didn’t know that. What a bitter man. I’m glad he’s falling he deserves
@@renatenha OP is making an assumption, which means what he said isn't necessarily true. The movie might have failed financially, but it's a great film, so Ridley did not fail.
Ok..... Love Ridley Scott, I am 37 and technically I'm a millennial.
He was talking about centennials, I guess ? The problem was the promotion, I didn't know about the movie until it was out of the cinema. It was a marketing flop.
Agreed. I am a millennial and I had never seen anything about the movie until this stuff blew up. Every millennial I know does whatever they can to go and see films at cinemas. We grew up with movies only at the cinemas?!?!! I am so confused by his BS. No one knew about this film so they couldn’t see it. Tbh it doesn’t look interesting to me. A film about SA and two white bro’s fighting with swords about it? Uh okay. Seems, shit. But even so there was no marketing anywhere and it was super hard to find.

The last duel was poorly advertised and promoted by the studio
Dour and long medieval period epics in a pandemic just aren't gonna scream box office gold right now. Studios have every right to produce these films, but some genres should temper expectations for big screen returns at the moment
I’m not a millennial and I didn’t want to see this movie. The casting just seemed odd to me.
Does... Does this guy think millennials are 16 years old?
He must be a republican blame everyone but himself
I hate people using the terms millennials and gen z and all the others. Makes me feel queasy

so riddle scott saying this today is just grumpy old man symptom.
its more covid then anything
Every time I saw the trailer, I thought to myself, “ how come their isn’t more marketing for this film?”
It only flopped because Ridley Scott refuses to remake "LEGEND!" Give us a remake or should I say reboot of LEGEND!
Just finished watching it tonight it's a great movie but Hollywood doesn't have the balls to remake it and if they did they would ruin it by trying to modernise it or put realism in it ,
Personally I would turn it into an anthology and have it directed by Guillermo del Toro
The other reason is because The Last Duel was released on October month which went up against Halloween Kills and Venom 2. October month is all about horror movies
Matt Damon is not a compelling medieval actor.
I didnt even know Ridley Scott released a new movie, I blame marketing on this failure.
These older gentlemen and filmmakers are facing major failure for the first time in their careers. He's just pissed off.
Isn't it the job of marketing to interest you in the movie you initially werent interested in?
“How a Facebook became a part of it” ahahahahaha good question 😂
Do boomers forget that Millennials are adults in their 20's and 30's? Also there a bit of a pandemic going around and people (at least in my country) are still skeptical about going out, not for a fucking mediocre movie anyway.
Maybe he should've marketed it on those "fucking cellphone" then more people would've seen it, I for one hadn't heard of this movie until I saw him talking shit
Ridley is on point
I saw absolutely no advertising for this movie
The last few medieval movie bombed, so should of spent some on marketing.
I didn't know this movie existed till after people started talking about it being a flop.
Literally, my first thought upon hearing this bit of news was, "Ooh! I wonder what John Campea will say about this!"
How are people supposed to know this movie even exists?
i never saw any adverts for this movie in the uk
I don't think Ridley Scott is entirely wrong. I don't see movies like "Gladiator" or "Good Will Hunting" attracting that many audience if they came out today. We have a very self-centred audiences nowadays. And they have grown up on plethora of entertainment choices: Tick Tok, Instagram, tens of thousands of streaming services. You blink and you miss. They don't even have that thought of "lets go support this movie".

Ridley Scott sounds like someone out-of-touch with reality.
This reminds of when Birds of Prey flopped last year and male comic book fans were to blame... lmao, these people are delusional.
Yep. Just like when ghostbusters 2016 was blamed for flopping because it had women in it. Like it couldn't just be a bad film.
Oh no Ridley Scott says something grouchy. That's like telling me that water is wet.
He is out of touch. But there is something here to talk about. A lot of people complain that all movies are the same and they want originality, but then those same people never support original movies or even watch them when they hit streaming. It is a weird cycle. I've come to the conclusion that people in general just like to bitch.
Cellphones and the internet have reduced the value of the cinematic artform in way. Cinema can't compete with the power of the internet.
