Concept of the game is that you wake in a resort (union plaza). Which was built in the 1960s. The robots are an AI that had gone "rogue". The reality of it, is that the AI killed the resort members due to the virus (the one the main character had at the end) infecting all of said resort members. We, the protagonist, are actually the antagonist, due to the fact that we disabled the AI that was protecting the resort from the viral pathogen. Which is likely why we never saw any real evidence of this until we reached the research center. The resort was created in the 1960s, and the canal research wing was created later in the 1970s. It's suggested that a human discovered the canal alien, and had intercourse with it, which explains the human-like alien we see in the research wing. This, then results in the creature sneaking on-board of the research center. With its invisible capabilities, it was able to spread the viral pathogen in secret until its effects began to take place across the moon base. They discuss a lot of this throughout the documents found, and various tapes across the research wing. I believe that the developers intended for this ending to create the potential to lead into a second game of sorts, due to the many plot holes.

I definitely feel like there’s much more to uncover with the way the game ended, maybe a continuation in the present day (something as the same premise of sirens rest, still wakes the deeps’ sequel). Could it be not that the founder had intercourse with it, but that he was born again through it? Because if the idea of the canal was that pathway the player goes through at the end of the run, and the one who gave birth was entity b, perhaps the moon created that creature to rebirth the founder into entity a. The canal is apparently full of that vegetation which is presumably the same matter as the entities, so perhaps the moon is able to create these at will. And now that the player is also in the canal, maybe the player will also be born again as one of these creatures; remembering how the player curled up as if in womb while in the canal's depths.

I think a main theme of this game was birth and them trying to simulate it. The canal, the amniotic brine, the prongs scanning the canal kinda like an ultrasound and even the connection of the alien son and mother have all these concepts of birth. From what I understood William was at the head of all this and was the person you find inside the asn core once you find him I think it transfers his consciousness to the player and it starts over. This is just my speculation and what I understood watching your playthrough though idk if im right! Awesome job tho this game was so cool!!

Love this kind of symbolism (Edit:) Also, in the first vid all this talk of “the Canal” was making me think, “like birth canal or river canal??” And as the story began to unfold, it became pretty clear that it meant birth canal. 45:12 When Max goes to align the prongs then goes back to Imaging, at the top of the terminal it says “Lunar Ecography”. An ecography is an Ultrasound, like for a baby. (and the lady on the tape recorder says “another contraction” like it’s some sort of pregnancy) Max doesn’t realize it, but he’s aligning the prongs to get a clear scan/ultrasound of the moon (the moon is pregnant??) As the terminal tries to get a clear image, a malfunction occurs and requires “immediate intervention”. Then the terminal quickly flashes “proceed to the ripening and induction terminal immediately” as in, the (moon?) must be induced. Max then goes to the induction terminal, and is then instructed to inject “amniotic brine” (which amniotic fluid is what a baby floats around in while in the mother’s womb). Somehow injecting this brine is what causes the moon to become induced, and now the “canal is ready” as in -ready to give birth (give birth to what? Some alien baby??) and after going through the canal, it’s obv that the character is experiencing some sort of internal hypnosis from a parasitic host, maybe an alien-baby-fungus-host born from the MOON???😱 Idk lol but all of it peaks my interest. Alright here’s my theory on the story. I played through the whole game before this video came out and from all the evidence I found, it looks like you were sent to the moon to disable the ASN not too long after the lunar quake. Once you arrived and got through quarantine though, you wake up and realize there’s no one there. The reason you wake up in this new area is because you’re infected by that fungus virus thing which, by reading emails and diaries, you can see that some symptoms include loss of time and passing out like that. Essentially, you passed out and forgot everything you did to arrive in the new area. The purpose of this new area is that it’s a research facility for the “canal” which is that weird cave thing. This facility was made and operational before the whole resort place (first part of the game) was built. It was shut down though because people were dying and the canal was dangerous, that’s the reason the emails and stuff were from a couple years prior to the emails in the resort area, the canal research area was literally just there before and therefore the scientists emails and such were from a few years before. This canal is what caused the scientists in that area to get the fungus sickness and also where the alien came from and so they tried to shut it down (or maybe everyone died and wasn’t able to keep the place operational). That brings us back to the resort and the lunar quake that happened. The lunar quake most likely opened up a crack into the canal which is what a few of those people found when they did a perimeter check. That’s why those people got the fungus aswell, because the canal was now open. Speaking of the fungus, it looks like its purpose is to make people uncontrollably attracted to the canal, feeling like they need to go into it, but going into it kills them and only spreads the fungus. If they don’t make it to the canal, they just die to the fungus themselves. That’s why there are so many logs where scientists talk about the canal and alien as if it’s an amazing thing, even if anyone with common sense would know that there’s no way it’s good. At the end of the game, you succumb to the symptoms and enter the canal which ends your life, but it looks like you started a new alien life with the copy of you (that periodically flashes into an alien) rising from the sphere thing in the canal. My guess is that the scientists (overcome by the effects of the canal sickness) decide to help the alien have a child. This is why you inject that ball with something and then later see it in the canal, it’s like an egg. This is most likely true because the alien itself, as seen in the logs, had a mate who died by choking on an apple. That’s why the alien wants you to let it watch videos featuring its mate on the screen towards the end. It misses its mate and wants a child. Also seen in the logs is a scientist who was talking weirdly about the alien and saying things about it looking lonely and pretty much saying he wants to help it. This is most likely again due to the canal sickness. This is also most likely why you collect those samples (DNA maybe) and use them to create and inject something into the ball which most likely fertilizes it kinda like an egg to create a new alien. So throughout the whole game, you as the player are uncovering more and more secrets about this moon base while also succumbing to the canal’s effects leading you to your death in the canal at the end. The part about 2025 just talks about how they sent a new team of people to try to uncover what happened on the moon. They go there, find a bunch of weird things, and eventually find their way into the canal where they can’t resist its effects. You can also see the bodies of the others who went into the canal on the pictures in the end. The whole team sent there goes into the canal, the connection to them is lost, and they most likely die down there. This just goes to show that even years later, the canal still has effects on people and just claimed new victims.

My comment might not be seen, but I completely agree with your opinion on AI. I personally would rather wait years for game developers to make a game as beautifully made and interesting like this one, rather than games that were directly made and structured with AI. You can see the hard work and the brain power of devs when they work hard on a game such as this one -- the hidden messages, the beautifully made graphics, and the raw emotion from the creature at 50:00 that makes the players heart wrench. I truly think thats something AI could never overcome. Another amazing game play from the goat.

I finished the game a few nights ago and I got to say, it’s my favorite horror game this year. The atmosphere, the sound design, story, how it just doesn’t hold your hand to figure out your way through this hell on the moon. I absolutely loved it all the way through and was definitely a challenge to get through sections lol. The game is short, so I recommend to just take it slow and breathe in this world. I didn’t want to rush through the game when I heard it’s about 4 hours long. I got introduced to this game 2 years ago and didn’t have to wait too long as the other fans since 2013. So happy it released and was worth my time and money
something i love about 3fs is that when he really plays a REALLY GOOD GAME like this he will not let it go unnoticed. he will always give a round of applause and dive into just how good these games can be. its just a nice way to do an outro it feels very appreciative and i think that just goes to show how much he cares for this. also ive been waiting for this game for like 3+ years and im SO glad my favorite youtuber is the one i got to see play and enjoy it.
i think re-birth and routine are treated as the same thing in this game. the psycologoist lady speaks about the different "routine" procedures people have to go through after they return fron the canal, to help them reintegrate and return to their stations, almost like they know that something in the canal is changing/warping people even on a physical level? you are going through the routine of "dying" (being changed/altered by the canal) and being "reborn" (decontaminated, doing your audio/visual tests, being reminded of your purpose) they are treating these corrupted/altered workers as if they are newborns, having to relearn simple things like auditory processing, spacial awareness, visual cues, etc etc the founder seems to stay in the canal somehow, perhaps a part of it all?, and as he says "through me, you endure... through you, i endure" perhaps that implies that through him people are given the chance to be reborn anew and through you he can continue to live on long past what he should have. (this is just my little interpretation/idea, no idea if theres any real basis for it lul)

Throughout the game you're repairing the systems, but by the end your role shifts from repairing systems to unknowingly completing the organism’s plan. You (protagonist) encounter a capsule with remains and an entity that looks like you, implying rebirth or transformation. The ending suggests you become a human-alien hybrid, showing that humanity wasn’t saved-the organism evolved through humans. TLDR: You didn't save humanity You help the alien rebirth and evolve but in the process restarting the loop which is implied at the end when it says "chapter 1 re-birth."
I believe what happens is that: At the end, when you touch hands with the person, yes, it rebirths you, restarting the cycle and the game. That's why the main character is holding their hand in the air when they wake up at the start- because they just touched the other person, rebirthed, and their memory was wiped. That's why it's called routine, and why you see the definition so much. The game, somehow, is a loop. A routine. Because the MC is doing the same thing over and over and over again without their knowledge.
I think the rebirth is supposed to show that youre just part of the cycle and ROUTINEEE, but thats what I take away from it idk if thats what the game devs are aiming at tho

If you think about it, when the player woke up at the very begginning, we did see the familiar blue-ish vision, like towards the end. It loops perfectly with the ending, too. The player's hand was reached out. Crazy details.

My comment might not be seen, but I completely agree with your opinion on AI. I personally would rather wait years for game developers to make a game as beautifully made and interesting like this one, rather than games that were directly made and structured with AI. You can see the hard work and the brain power of devs when they work hard on a game such as this one -- the hidden messages, the beautifully made graphics, and the raw emotion from the creature at 50:00 that makes the players heart wrench. I truly think thats something AI could never overcome. Another amazing game play from the goat.

I finished the game a few nights ago and I got to say, it’s my favorite horror game this year. The atmosphere, the sound design, story, how it just doesn’t hold your hand to figure out your way through this hell on the moon. I absolutely loved it all the way through and was definitely a challenge to get through sections lol. The game is short, so I recommend to just take it slow and breathe in this world. I didn’t want to rush through the game when I heard it’s about 4 hours long. I got introduced to this game 2 years ago and didn’t have to wait too long as the other fans since 2013. So happy it released and was worth my time and money
something i love about 3fs is that when he really plays a REALLY GOOD GAME like this he will not let it go unnoticed. he will always give a round of applause and dive into just how good these games can be. its just a nice way to do an outro it feels very appreciative and i think that just goes to show how much he cares for this.

i think re-birth and routine are treated as the same thing in this game. the psycologoist lady speaks about the different "routine" procedures people have to go through after they return fron the canal, to help them reintegrate and return to their stations, almost like they know that something in the canal is changing/warping people even on a physical level?
you are going through the routine of "dying" (being changed/altered by the canal) and being "reborn" (decontaminated, doing your audio/visual tests, being reminded of your purpose)
they are treating these corrupted/altered workers as if they are newborns, having to relearn simple things like auditory processing, spacial awareness, visual cues, etc etc
the founder seems to stay in the canal somehow, perhaps a part of it all?, and as he says "through me, you endure... through you, i endure" perhaps that implies that through him people are given the chance to be reborn anew and through you he can continue to live on long past what he should have.
(this is just my little interpretation/idea, no idea if theres any real basis for it lul)

I believe what happens is that:
At the end, when you touch hands with the person, yes, it rebirths you, restarting the cycle and the game. That's why the main character is holding their hand in the air when they wake up at the start- because they just touched the other person, rebirthed, and their memory was wiped. That's why it's called routine, and why you see the definition so much. The game, somehow, is a loop. A routine. Because the MC is doing the same thing over and over and over again without their knowledge.

Woah, awesome game. I think the ending hints that it's a time loop, hence the name, Routine. If you think about it, when the player woke up at the very begginning, we did see the familiar blue-ish vision, like towards the end. It loops perfectly with the ending, too. The player's hand was reached out. Crazy details.
