    Important detail missing here is the indexing O-ring removal, not sure if that will lead to inconsistent results with the Zero modular shell holder system. The Zero press comes with the horseshoe clip (as seen in the video) that sits just above an indexing O-ring, which is meant to hold traditional shell holders. When using the Zero modular shell holder system, it comes with its shell holder base fitted to be inserted in the ram, the horseshoe clip and the indexing O-ring are both to be removed when using the Modular Shell Holder System. In this video it wasn't visible that the indexing O-ring was removed as part of the install process.

      Can confirm, this O-ring needs to be removed. I was getting inconsistency using a SAC resizing die and couldn't figure out why until I removed the shell holder and found I left the O-ring in. Removed it and inconsistency dissappeared.

    I got mine the other day. What an improvement over my old Redding Competition Set. Throw in the .001 shims from my SAC dies and my bump is beyond precise. I sort brass as it gets fireformed (a small amount just grows and sizes different) - throw this in the mix and my headspace is beyond consistent.

      @@ralphproudfoot620 I have friends that love theirs too - mine was just not so consistent. I had to get a few sets to mix and match to get close to the stated differences. It is such a great way to size though.

      @@sf2189 Same here. The Redding are great if they all are accurate. Unfortunately it took almost 3/4 of the price of the A419 to get a set together that worked (and that's just for .308 based cases). Ended up selling them and just getting the A419, which conveniently works for .223, .308, and Magnum based cartridges.

    The advantage is being able to bottom die out but NOT over bump.
    You should have used the plus 2 to bump the max then use the negative ones. You should not have expected a delta of 6 as you only bumped 3.5 with the 0 spacer.
    With the plus two the bump should be close to 5-6 then you could put in the minus 2 and see if bump is decreased by 4.

    As a big Area419 fun, I have bought almost all their reloading stuff and I have to say this product is the last piece you should buy among their other awesome stuff. It's a bad product by design. Changing the thickness of the insert but keep the same cap will limit the usage of this tool to certain brand brass. For example, my Nosler 223 brass work fine but most other 223/556 brass will not land on the insert if +6 or +8 is used. The brass will be hanging by the cap at the ejector grove and will not even be able to insert into dies. The case will be damaged if keep using it. I reload 223, 308win, 6.5 cr so I can use 3 of the 4 caps provided. Unfortunately, with full contact of the die bottom and the ramp (as suggested by the introduction video), NONE of them will be able to give a 0.002'' shoulder bump with the thinnest insert (+8). They all still got oversized (Redding, RCBS, SAC dies). I still have to back up the die to achieve my ideal shoulder bump. This might be just my rifles creating too much expansion. But as other mentioned, Redding makes similar function shell holders and their design is better because it won't damage the brass with thinner holder, and they don't need you to keep screw the cap on and off to switch, let along they're 1/3 of the price. But there are still two reasons makes me keep this piece. First it makes adjusting shoulder bump easier. Second is it just looks nice siting among other Area419 stuff.

    I told my gunsmith about this kit and he showed me the Redding set. And here in Australia it’s over half the price of the area 419 and your not messing about with shims.

      I have the Redding set too, The Redding's are far cheaper, do the exact same thing and arn't specific to a particular press.... in my eyes that makes the Redding far nicer that the 419s

  • @xeoh85

    Your math appears to be off.
    With the +0 shim, you are getting the amount of resizing inherent to the combination of your die setup and your fire formed brass, which you measured to be a DECREASE in headspace of -3.5.
    By adding a +6 shim, you are INCREASING headspace by UP TO +6 relative to your die’s baseline.
    But importantly, headspace can never grow above that of your fire formed brass, i.e., no resizing at all. Your die was inherently sizing -3.5, so you had only a theoretical maximum of +3.5 to gain relative to the +0 shim before you are simply back at the size of your fire formed brass and are not resizing headspace at all. So even in theory, a +4 shim, +6 shim, and +8 shim should all yield the same result for you - no headspace resizing at all - because all are more than the -3.5 resizing inherent to your die setup.
    So assuming your -3.5 measurement for the +0 shim was correct, here are the measurements you should theoretically observe:
    -2 shim: -5.5 headspace
    +0 shim: -3.5 headspace
    +2 shim: -1.5 headspace
    +4 shim: -0 headspace
    +6 shim: -0 headspace
    +8 shim: -0 headspace
    Ultimately, I suspect your measured -0.5 for the +6 shim was actually a 0 measurement, and your caliper and/or hands were just inaccurate by -0.5.

      For one style shell holder…….
      this does it for three shell holders and probably future shell holders that they release. So instead of buying $60-70 sets all you need is probably a $20 shell holder from them.

    Cool product, but I don't understand why it's a thing. I've always set my shoulder bump by adjusting my die and I get consistent results...?

  • @briancowan4318
    @briancowan4318 2 года назад +1

    I'm confused. The +/-0 setting bumped the shoulder -3.5 thou and the +6 setting bumped it -0.5 thousandths. Was the initial zero measurement prior to bumping?

    • @lukej5996
      @lukej5996 2 года назад +3

      It’s ok Gavin is confused too, because that’s not how this works. If you set your sizer to bump 4 thou with the 0 shim, you’d get 2 thou bump with the +2 shim, 0 bump with the +4 shim and the same with the +6 shim.

      I was thinking the same thing. Sometimes, aerospace engineering finds it's way into my feed under reloading. I'm happy with my RCBS and Redding die sets to get me to ring steel at 1K yds. I can understand having the latest Area419 products...my wallet will disagree with me :)

    Why didn't you show how much difference in sized and fired and loaded brass maby show how the dies are for headspace with that system you could a just to the point of a thousands crush or even a half that but no set back at all then only the bullet jump would have any effect
