    Great banjo story. I love it. Great playing by all three. I play banjo too, and I'm in awe of Russ's ability to play out front on a break, then bring it back down for background playing, all while playing with great time and fantastic tone. It surely isn't easy. This video is inspiring!

    My friend had a 1935 Gibson RB-3 (?) Arch top 5 string banjo. I said had because he passed away a few years ago. That was the prettiest sounding banjo I've ever heard. Not only did it sound good, but it was also easier to play than my modern Gibson Earl Scruggs model. I know everyone seems to like the flat head, but you may recall Ralph Stanley played an Arch top.

    I am the "protector" of a 1928 Granada with the 40 hole ring and I just dont think a flathead sounds any better..and Ive played more than a handful some incredible prewar flatheads...IMHO.
    But, I will say this..the BEST sounding banjo Ive ever had in my hands was an original RB75 from either 1937 or 1938. Mr. McCumbers was kind enough let me play it at a festival back in 1994 in West Virginia

    I CANT REALLY HEAR ANY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ANY OF THE BEST MAKERS ' BANJOS . THEY ALL SOUND GREAT . ANY GOOD BANJO IN THE HANDS OF ANY GREAT PLAYER WILL SOUND GREAT TO ME . I GUESS ALL THAT FOOLING AROUND WITH THE ALL THE PARTS THAT MAKE UP A BANJO IS THAT EVERY BANJO PLAYER IS STILL TRYING TO GET THE SOUND THAT EARL GOT .

  • @davidlee-vm9ub
    @davidlee-vm9ub 5 месяцев назад

    RIGHT...IMHO...when someone changes out the brass hoop for a non factory Gibson ring on a non-mastertone prewar Gibson, at that point it is just another "parts" banjo...to me, its no longer a Gibson...
