I remember during my edgy anime hungering teenage years, I pirated this anime and watched it when I was playing hookey. I forgot about it until I watched this video and now that scene where the child gets blasted on the knee and on the skull just sticks back into my my mind. Thank you ANN, very cool
6:07 I loved this anime, but had the same issue. Just an audio remaster would do wonders for this thing's longevity as just a horrifying romp of gore and mayhem.
Genocyber is perfection on a semi unrelated note ive really wanted an ova like the cyborg009vsdevilman one (highly recommend) but for genocyber and evangalion
Just finished watching Genocyber, dubbed, (oh my god a monster.... oh well) for the 2nd time after a long interval, and I.... enjoyed it. Love your take on what you thought this anime was missing and I agree on pretty much all of your points. You raise some interesting choices and/or potential for anyone wanting to remake this. 'Fleshy aircraft carrier arc' would make a fine keystone for this story and visuals alike if anyone wanted the challenge of remaking this.
I would like to see Genocyber crossover with: Mortal Kombat (crossfire between Earthrealm and Netherrealm, with Liu Kang, Raiden, Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn, Scropion, Sub Zero, Sonya Blade, Kitana etc) Aliens (assist Ripley and Marine to fight Mother Alien and Alien Queen), Predators, Terminator, Hellraiser (encounter Pinhead), Ash Williams of Evil Dead, X-men (where Charles Xavier, Cyclops , Wolverine and Magneto approach Genocyber), Superman, Supergirl or Justice League, Incredible Hulk and She Hulk, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Thor or Avengers, Guyver, Doom, Watchmen, Warhammer 40000, Suicide Squad, Mutant League, Spawn, Hellboy, Invincible (with Omni Man), The Boys (with Homelander), Starship Troopers, Fist Of The North Star, Underworld (Lycan, Selina) StarCraft
I feel like putting that spoiler warning at the start with zero context, just "go watch Genocyber first," is at least mildly a dick move, especially since this series is so... *itself* that you can't actually really spoil it.
Was disappointed in the end. I knew what to expect going on, I heard the later episodes were bad. There were too many unexplained things. Stuff happens and you just kinda have to accept it. Then entirely new things happen. The genocyber character was so extremely weak. Motivations were so paper thin or perhaps poorly presented. Firstly, we don't see elaine learning about their powers or what they can do. But then they are suddenly a combat expert. Then they nuke HK because their friend died. Another thing is the war that lasted 100 years. So these 2 people inside the genocyber just continuously fought for 100 years? I cannot even fathom this. It's so random. There's no explanation or demonstration of why they destroyed basically all cities. The ending provided no payoff. Instead they just destroy the city, killing/dooming a ton of people again for no good reason.
The overarching narrative is quite simply humanity bad. On the other hand, the original manga in was like cyberpunk sailor moon or something like that.

I'm on the opposite end the spectrum this was instantly one of my favorites in 94 and still is
I watched it back in 2009 or 2010, and I loved it. I always recommend it.
It feels like something that would be a great videogame
Always thought about that

Genocyber is good but its always going to be a poor man's Akira.
