As a kid I was so scared of sharks that I would not even go in the pool alone. I had just left the Army after Desert Storm and was still afraid of sharks. I hated that I had gone through combat and was afraid to do what I saw kids doing. I was living in Huntington Beach at 15th n PCH (between Walnut and Olive for those familiar). I wanted to conquer my fear. I was going out every day. Slowly pushing the limits. One day I was out about 100 yards after sunset all by myself. I was really proud of myself being out the far by myself after sunset. I noticed the life guard boat about 200 yards or so from me looking into the water. No biggie. As it started getting dark I paddled in and walked home feeling pretty good about myself. That night the news reported that a lifeguard boat had followed a very large white shark from the Newport pier to the Huntington pier where they lost sight of it. That is what they were looking at when I noticed them. Scared the shit out of me knowing that I was in the water very close to a large white shark and had no idea. Undoubtedly it knew I was there. About a week or two later, a baby white shark was caught by fisherman (this was before they were protected). That shark was mounted at Davey's locker in Newport. (it has since been taken down) The experts surmised that the large white shark they followed was the mother and was giving birth. There was a fatal great white shark attack at Solano Beach (San Diego County) where a shark attacked a guy that was leading a group of triathletes during their daily trining session. The attack was not a mistake, apparently that shark went after the guy biting him several times with the intent to kill him. The experts surmised that it was a pregnant female giving birth and was attacking in order to get rid of any threats to her baby. That was exactly the situation I was in on that day.
I use to swim from the LJ Cove out to about the 2nd buoy, I would see Batrays in clusters hanging out suspended and not moving about 10 feet below the surface. It was a sight to see, you could also note that as you passed close by, they would spike( for lack of any other description) their tails as if to say " Stay away".
Keith Poe(Shark Tagger) and Doc Domeier have been tagging white sharks for years. He tags multiple 17+ feet sharks per year off of Point Conception. Videos most of them. Pretty incredible.
Well, with the # of sealions around, the GWS's must be dieting. The ratio, between them is out of balance. Most haven't seen the harbors. Try a Harbor Boat Cruize. The state receives a heck of a lot of $ from animal rights organizations. The state says thank you by doing things like this. Protecting the Mtn. Lion needlessly, is another example. In many areas, they are over populating & inbreeding. That produces sick, weak animals that are prone to disease. I guess ya gotta do what the money supplier wants you to do, huh. In the long run, the politician gets his $, the animal rights gets the silly laws they pay for, and the animal becomes sickly, diseased & suffers. "politics sucks."
The new rules in effect on January 1, 2023. These rules, found in California Fish and Game Code, section 5517, prohibit the use of shark bait, shark lures or shark chum to attract a white shark. Anglers also may not place those items into the water within one nautical mile of any shoreline, pier or jetty, when a white shark is visible or known to be present. So, no shark fishing anymore? How would the state know that your bait is for GWS, when it could be for other unprotected shark species? To "chum" GWS's do you need to toss out dead sea lions? What about chumming for Mako's Threashers and Blue Sharks? What is a GWS lure, as opposed to any big game lure such as lures for Tuna, Marlin, Swordfish, etc? Lastly, read the very sentance in the bill. If a white shark is w/in a nautical mile of your hook must come out of the water, and you must move your boat, even though your successfully catching the legal species you wanted to fish for. "Hey ... we thought we saw a GWS, or a boat reported seeing one a mile out to sea, so fisherman take your lines out of the water. Since Great Whites are known to be present within a mile of Malibu Pier, it is now closed to any fishing, until the next Ice Age. Thank you! Totally unenforcable and if it is, alot of innocent fisherman are in for very expensive fines, or maybe 6 mo. in prison. " I'm here for attempted murder and robbing the Bank of Burbank, but Gascone said he would have me outta here after he takes his lunch today. And what are you in for dude? Oh, I was fishing and another boat thought he spotted a GWS a mile from my boat. I have to do 6 mo." "Hey Gascone'll get you out of here." ''I don't know, I've already been locked-up here for 5 1/2 months!" "Should have run someone over instead, dude. This state is arse backwards.
No, most sportfisherman follow the laws, as they do in FL. Some slip up because they misinterpreted a reg. The one's that don't follow the laws usually don't have a clue about any regulations, and if you've ever seen the DFG regs, you'l need a lawyer to explain much of it. A fair amount of laws are not enforceable.

This state doesn't care about swimmers. There are more GWS's today than ever. The reason is that Sealions, also fed. protected since the 70s, has allowed them to overpopulate, several times over. They've taken over harbor beaches from children and I'm sure tons of waste has leached into the sand. They've destroyed countless docks in our harbors, and also have sank boats that are tied-up at docks and in the middle of the harbors. People have worked their lives away to own these boats, only to watch them become toilets while above water & reefs after they sink. FYI, it is a crime to scare them off your own properties also. That would be animal harrassment. If the sealions are controlled the sharks will be also. Protection is not always a good thing. Numbers need to be controlled not only for some animals, but for us, also.

On La Jolla Shores, across from the Cove the Batrays and Sting Rays bred and would be prolific in the spring. It was difficult to walk...
Great reporting Mr. Styles.
