Pretty stuff for sure! I collected some beautiful green stone along the shoreline of the lower Potomac earlier this year. When I cut a slab it turned out to be quartz, the green color was just some discoloration on the surface. What size piece of yellow stone are you looking for? I have some mookite and some jasper, both of which are predominantly yellow in color.
My wife redecorated my daughter's room when she graduated from college and moved out. @@MichiganRocks we got ours way way back, like in 1965 or so. wish I had held onto it. And you did get a good buy, for sure, much nicer looking than the one we got.
The yellow standing on the outside is due to iron. If you want yellow rock, talk to Katydid or Theo Kellison and trade for some yellow jasper...they have lots! 😁🇨🇦♥️🇨🇦
I’m not surprised that it could be iron staining. Thanks for the tip on finding yellow rocks. I was hoping to do this project with rocks from Michigan, but that might not be possible.
Silly question from someone over near Gaylord... Does Yooperlite polish well? If so, where would one locate yooperlite jewelry? My grandmother started a tradition when I was a teen of giving her granddaughters jewelry made of Michigan stones. My girls, granddaughters and even younger cousins all have Petoskey Stone and Isle Royal Greenstone jewelry but I'd LIKE to add Yooperlite jewelry to their collections.
Yes, Yooperlites polish nicely. The problem with using them for jewelry is that they’re just gray rocks unless they’re under U.V. light. There’s no good way to light up a pendant. Here are some videos about them: Tumbling Yooperlites: ruclips.net/video/5wiAY3vVFws/видео.html Slabbing Yooperlites: ruclips.net/video/xJUMoIpOhoo/видео.html Making Yooperlite Fridge Magnets: ruclips.net/video/ejpOt6Ru2jk/видео.html
Awesome video nice slabs I’m sure the outcome of what you do to them will be sweet, that is cool about gluing a board to the slab again thank you awesome
I'm not sure why that's funny, but I'm glad it's funny rather than infuriating or something. Rocks tend to look much better either polished or wet because it brings out the color. Thanks for watching something you wouldn't normally watch, I appreciate it.
Lots of people start with a tile saw. I was able to find a used lapidary trim saw early on, so I have never used one. Looks like they get you pretty wet, so it’s probably an outdoor activity.
Love it! I did get a ton of rocks from lake Erie some are smaller pebbles because I seem to like them a little more. Definitely some different rocks very interesting. Would love to share my finds with you and your family.
I'd like to see what you find in Lake Erie. I've never hunted rocks there. You could send a couple pictures to my Instagram account if you want. It's in the description of this video.
We have the same 10" slab saw. Hp lapidary has a saw that looks just like the loritone and the parts interchange. We ended up putting the new hp carriage and vice in ours.
I’ve heard mixed reviews of the HP saw. it seems like they also stole the design from Lortone, so I’m hesitant to give them business. At the same time, that saw looks really nice. It’s good to know parts are there if I ever really need them though.
@@MichiganRocks also appreciated the 2x4 tip of gluing the rocks to it that are being slabbed. No more wasting of the rocks. Been using it after seeing another video where you showed us. Thank you.
@@captpaul8827 I have a 10" Frantom too. It has a gravity feed, but I've never gotten it to work right. I use that saw to hand slab my Petoskeys. It has a nice little fence that makes it pretty easy to get slabs of a consistent thickness.
I watched one of your videos on making pendants for your wife. You wire wrapped around a groove. I'd like to do that--can you tell me what kind of glass grinder you have and specifically what "bit" is used to make the groove? Thanks a bunch!
Yep, they're both in my Amazon storefront in the description of this video. I don't think the exact make of glass grinder is important, but the bit is.
Wow! Those slabs look great. Cool you make ornaments from them. What happened to the controversial rock? The one you left behind? The one that caused a big hullabaloo and you went back and retrieved it. Still waiting for you to cut that baby up. Did you? Are you going to tumble it? Did I miss the video?
A oil saw may be in my future. For now I’m using a 7-inch Makita angle grinder and diamond blade. to dry cut. Only a dozen cuts later, the blade still looks good. My question is, how long does your blade last cutting with oil?
My blades last a long time in this saw. It's hard to say how long, but I'm not complaining. I'm on my second blade since I got the saw about seven years ago.
@@MichiganRocks , very nice. Thinking oil is the way to go, even if initial cost is more. Safer too, I believe. Won’t get as hot and the rocks not shatter, at least that’s what I’m thinking. Saving blade life is my focus, a good blade is more than a nice dinner out!
I have more Michigan shirts than that. when I first started doing these videos, my wife pointed out that I was wearing some that had holes in them. I guess that bothered her, because she ordered seven more for me. She’s a Michigan fan, so I think she likes seeing me in Michigan shirts.
Hi Rob! I was wondering, once you cut your rocks into slabs, do you hand polish them or do you throw them in the tumbler (if they are small)? Thanks in advance for your help :)
I don't do either. I use the slabs to make other things. A lot of them get made into little stone crosses, Christmas ornaments, or jewelry. I never polish whole slabs.
I think my favorite was the nice rock. The weather changes were something else. We rarely get rain in the summer in California. I love the thunder and lightning, but that’s something we don’t get very often either. It’s a treat when we do. My dog doesn’t like the thunder sounds though. I have always wondered if dogs get used to it, if they live in places with a lot of thunder and lightning.
The answer to the dog in thunderstorms is no. I had one who hid under my bed when the noise started. She did this from the time she was a pup until her hearing went bad.

When I was in high school, a friend and I mowed 70 lawns with push mowers (the powered kind). We prided ourselves on straight lines. I haven't forgotten how to do that.
Love your Christmas ornaments....your so creative!
Makes me wanna slab rocks, but first have to decide where to move I can afford on my INCOME so I can become a serious ROCK HOUNDER!
It's good to have a goal to work toward. Keep your eyes out for a used saw. New ones are really expensive, that's why I bought used.
Dang, no wonder you did not get to many slabs cut one game of Canasta can take all night. Nice to see you cut some slabs, I was telling the wife only 5 months to Christmas, I got the better start saving look. Good post as always, happy trails until next time.
We usually play two games of canasta and sometimes a quick game of euchre after. That's enough cards for one night.
We had a saw just like that, bought it used for a hundred and cut a ton of rocks with it. That was many many years ago.
I got mine for $400 and a four hour round trip to pick it up. I still thought it was a good deal.
@@MichiganRocks
we got ours way way back, like in 1965 or so. wish I had held onto it. And you did get a good buy, for sure, much nicer looking than the one we got.
Looks like a safe slab-cutting machine you have. I always worry watching people cutting rocks with their fingers so close to the blade.
You should watch this video so you don't worry about rock saws so much: ruclips.net/video/Er4YLn4fXUA/видео.html
@@MichiganRocks Wow! Thanks for the link. I feel better now.
Have you ever tried to make a wind chime out of the slabs ? i have a slab cut geode wind chime and the sound it makes is beautiful
No, someone suggested that I do that, but I haven’t. Maybe some day.
Here are some videos about them:

Awesome video nice slabs I’m sure the outcome of what you do to them will be sweet, that is cool about gluing a board to the slab again thank you awesome
I have already cut a lot of these into little crosses. They’ve been shining up nicely.
Nice Sir
as someone who's not particularly knowledgable about working with rocks, "here's what it looks like wet" is an amusing phrase to me for some reason
I'm not sure why that's funny, but I'm glad it's funny rather than infuriating or something. Rocks tend to look much better either polished or wet because it brings out the color. Thanks for watching something you wouldn't normally watch, I appreciate it.
Loved all your slabs. I'm thinking about getting a tile saw to cut rocks that are to big to tumble. Always enjoy your videos.
Lots of people start with a tile saw. I was able to find a used lapidary trim saw early on, so I have never used one. Looks like they get you pretty wet, so it’s probably an outdoor activity.
@@MichiganRocks yes. That's the plan. Use it outside.
Hey Rob how have you been?
I’ve been great. Nice to see you again.
@@MichiganRocks Thats good ive been watching on my tv latly and i cant comment on there.
@@daydbaysinger4572 Ok, I'm glad you're still watching. Don't worry about commenting, but it was nice to hear from you.
@@MichiganRocks will do later today! I found some two tones right down the middle. I will say I am enjoying this! And my kids love it to.
Thank you.
@@slothhunter4615 Yep, that works great.
I have a 10" Frantom saw that is a beast! It's at my parent's currently, but once I have the room for it, it's coming with me.
@@captpaul8827 I have a 10" Frantom too. It has a gravity feed, but I've never gotten it to work right. I use that saw to hand slab my Petoskeys. It has a nice little fence that makes it pretty easy to get slabs of a consistent thickness.
What an awesome setup, doesn't look like you get many saw mark's. 👍✌️
No, usually there are no saw marks, but once in awhile I get one.
@@MichiganRocks that's the one, those stone's are amazing too. Enjoy the rest of your week. 👌
Nice unakite, these stones are so beautiful, same weather we have here today
This is not the same as the weather we're having here lately.
I tumbled that one quite awhile ago. Somehow you missed it. But lucky for you, it's still in the theater: ruclips.net/video/Ij40SdinQ0Q/видео.html
As a kid I loved putting a bright flashlight under a slab. Also do you have a Michigan shirt for every day of the week?
I have more Michigan shirts than that. when I first started doing these videos, my wife pointed out that I was wearing some that had holes in them. I guess that bothered her, because she ordered seven more for me. She’s a Michigan fan, so I think she likes seeing me in Michigan shirts.
nice video
Great looking stuff.. Michigan weather.. if you dont like it .. wait 5 min. it will change..lol
That’s true!
@@MichiganRocks Gotcha! Thank you for your advice!
I have the same Saw. yours looks a little nicer than mine, but for being an old saw they sure do cut Gneiss(nice). GO BLUE!!!
It is a good saw. I’d buy another if I ever found one.
I'd be hiding under the bed if there was an earthquake like in California.
@@MichiganRocks I have lived here all my life. The last big one we had here was in 89. I don’t like them much either. I was born here, but would love to move. More because of the politics, than the earthquakes. It’s not the same place that I grew up in. At least I live in the suburbs, rather than a city. People are leaving California like crazy now.
@@MichiganRocks 😂
That's a cool saw 😃
Really neat slabs 🥰🥰
I have one or two of those Tigre looking rocks
I like that saw a lot. It's out there cutting right now, as a matter of fact.
And what will you do with the rocks after slabbing them?
Most get made into little crosses. I also make some pendants, little stone turtles, and fridge magnets.

I love your videos.but I need help with polishing.i got the final polish you recommended, but my stones are so murky yet.i wonder if I ruined them earlier with the wrong polish?
You can't ruin rocks with the wrong polish. You can always go back and fix them up. I can't help you without a lot more information, but you should probably go back to at least 500 and redo that step.
@@MichiganRocks thank you so much for your response! I will try.is it possible that the rocks are incompatible,so to speak? They seem like a lot of quartz.i am trying to see if I can attach a pic,but not sure how
@@huntzer1230 Tumbling harder rocks with softer rocks can damage the softer rocks. Sometimes you can get shallow surface fractures.
@@MichiganRocks ty for your response...is there an easy way to tell the hardness? Ty very mych
@@huntzer1230 Yep, here's a video on that: ruclips.net/video/GpH55EylhX0/видео.html

At least you got a video. There are no other prizes for being early, unfortunately.
If u are looking for a yellow rock talk to one of the Montana rock ppl for a yellow jasper
Thanks, Keith. Someone else suggested that too. I might do that, but I had my heart set on finding a rock from Michigan to do the job. That might not be possible though.
Great video and very creative with the Christmas decorations 👏👏. just thought i would let you know that i have received my Andonstar microscope that you showed. I think it is fantastic and provides a whole new experience when i am looking at my opal and other rocks. fantastic, thankyou 👏👏👏🇦🇺

Is Crystal Lake in Michigan a good spot to rock hound? How about the Leland area?
I have never been to Crystal Lake. Leland is great though. Here are a couple videos showing my two hunted there:

@@MichiganRocks We had a wonderful time this past Tuesday at Thompson Beach in Leland. I found 2 petoskey stones and some small pieces of the Leland blue. We enjoyed it very much, thanks for the information and your wonderful videos. I think I also may have found a Gowganda Tillite with neon green streaks in the matrix. 😃
This is seriously cool. Do you ever go to Rock and Mineral shows to sell any of the rocks you've collected/slabbed? Kalamazoo has a good one. People would buy this stuff (I know I would)😁👍👍👍👍
Nope, I have never even been to a rock show. There aren't any near me as far as I know. The good thing about living where I do is that I have beaches to myself. The downside is that we don't have other things like rock shows.
