Looking good there B. One thing I've found helpful when doing a non-bagged part is after everything has been laid up, is to come back with a paper towel, and use it as a "dabber" to work fabric into corners, pop bubbles, and soak up excess epoxy. I sometimes do it as the epoxy is starting to go off (while it's still flowing and before it goes into Jell-O consistency). Often times when using CF around real tight corners, add some toothpaste-consistency filler with the first epoxy layer (Cab-O-Sil or chopped CF) into those corners before before laying the cloth. If you wanted to be totally bitchen, you could put a bunch of CF tow (single strands from the fabric) to fill in the "steps" along the hatch opening before laying the fabric. That would give a super-rigid opening.
Thanks, doc. I just layer up the hatch. I actually used the chopped carbon fiber in the corners. Hopefully, it comes out okay.
Awesome video! Im really interested in this kind of rc boat modeling. One tip for releasing the part from the mold is to use warm water. PVA solves in water and the part will release easier. I did the same with my F1 cowls 😀. Cheers, DJ

I agree more skill that I have lol. Hopefully I can get a better hull next time, I have very little experience with carbonfiber, if I would have used fiberglass & gelcoat I'm sure it would of come out perfect.
EPIC!! Awesome work bro! I’ve done wet lay up CF work 2 times and I’ve used a small amount of spray adhesive to tack up the cloth to the substrate to keep it flat and conforming. it worked for what I was overlaying, may not work in a mold. Either way I’m pumped for this series!
Next go around I'm going to try vacuum forming with a diy vacuum storage bag. I had alot of air bubbles in this one which i expected.. I have alot more experience with fiberglass layup carbon is kinda new to me. Overall I'm happy. Thanks for
I liked it, for the next one you can use unidirectional carbon fiber strips on the steps and if you want better results, use the vacuum bags to store clothes, they are very cheap and they work perfectly
Cant wait for the dragboat to get redone ny favorite by far., went to run at olander today but there stocking it with rainbow trout and having a kids only fishing derby so no watercraft allowed including rc boats.bummed best day for the next 7days. Great mold. I'm trying to see if it's possible to lay in polyethylene plastic into a mold made of fiberglass. Since polyethylene is a thermoplastic one would need to either use a vacuum or heat or both to lay it into a mold. I'm actually trying to make a windsurfing board that has an exterior hull of High Density Polyethylene for durability and an expanded polyurethane foam core. Have you tried to use HD Poly for your boats in the fiberglass molds?
Probably have better luck with a vacuum former and a bare hull? Never worked with poly so I can't really help. Good luck with your project
Ive had a 20 year break from moulding, just getting back into it, the yellow honey wax and spraying the pva has proved to give great results for me ,( didnt have the time to video it ) taught by the late John Stidwell , world champ , so no amateur .Carbon composites do a clip vac bagging with the clothes vac bags and breather cloth to get a closer moulding at a sensible price. I was using comon turtle wax to wax my mold before pva, looking into honywax/ release wax for my next pull. Already have the clothes bags all I need now is the breather cloth or peel ply for my next hull. This one had alot of imperfections, which I kinda expected but overall I'm happy with the part
@@IRONCLADRC The common way is 2 layers of carbon fibre in opposite directions to each other to balance the twisting action ,as you dont have gel coat to lug about, and the bagging means less resin , so tough as old boots and still less weight than hand layups . Regards PJB
Came out great Big B. Can't wait for when you get to the rigging stage. I'm real curious to see how your going to set up the boat. More than likely you'll go with a surface drive, which should work well. Going with a submerged drive might be a gamble because it will limit the tuning ability and you never know how the boat will perform. I don't think a outboard will work either because of the limited transom space even with a smaller outboard such as the TFL mini. Oh well, awesome video! #boatgang

Great job Big B!! it should fly! I'm not criticizing you in any way here..the only thing missing off that hull is a ride pad. Or I could be wrong.Can't wait to see it scream!
That's a good idea I could sand a ride pad into one of my variations. Thanks for the idea
For PVA use a Badger 250 air brush . Cheap easy to clean .
Roger that, thanks very helpful. I've been using a cheap harbor freight touch up gun which works okay I think my problem is the turtle wax I was using opposed to the part all wax.

This looks great I'm planning to do something similar for my old aquacraft mini Rio. Have any more details on that tiny hydro? What was the seller on ebay?
I have a AC mini mono I want to pull a mold from I talked to a few guys about the process, they recommended epoxy over fiberglass resins, fiberglass gets hot when it kicks off and may disform the plastic hull during the mold making process.
