- The weekend homestead project this week is installing siding on the tiny cabin bunkhouse.
Well.....there is a little more maple syrup fiasco also..........
But I promise this is the last video that will have me trying to get sap from the maple trees. After a month of inconsistent flow I'm throwing in the towel. I think the week it ran the most I was gone.....Oh well. There is always next year.
Now that the weather is warming up it's time to get going on the bunkhouse. Which, btw, I have officially named the "bunker". On this video I install smart siding on the first row of the bunker. I ran out of time so till need to finish the gable peaks but that will go fast. I took a temporary job so needing to take a break and go to work! You'll have to wait until the next video to see what job I took. That is coming out next week!
For the future, mulch your gardens with straw, not leaves. Straw It reduces weed infestation, but most importantly it isolates the fruit from the damp substrate and reduces the development of fungal diseases, especially gray mold. Fresh sawdust and wood chips are also often used for mulching.
That makes sense. I'll watch for straw bales iin the fall.
To quote a movie from "our" time Trey: "She's a beut Clark"!
Every once and awhile 'a blind squirrel".........
😊HAPPY Man and Dog, so cool.
You are so kind
Taps heal in about 4 weeks usually, depends on health of the tree. Tapping too early stalls the run. We used to watch when our nearby syrup makers started putting out their taps and then put ours out that week 😂
That's good info to know. Thanks!
That is good info to know! Thank you!
i like the fact that you finish the outside first then worry about the inside
Mostly because I can't decide what to do on the inside!
Bunk House Looking Good.
thank you, sir
Great job on the flashing and siding gap at the bottom. The siding looks great.
Thank you Eugene!
Great video… all your work is paying off “fer sure”! 👍🏼😊🌲
Thanks Mar!
Hi Terry. I’m really inpressed with your siding skills. The bunkhouse looks really nice. Sorry about the crummy sap season. Maybe next year. I always tell my mountain house, “Goodbye house, I love you and I’ll be back soon” when leaving. You do something similar!!
They get their own identity..... kind of like me naming my cars!
Perfect cut success!
LOL! Small victories!
Nicely done with that siding. not easy to work with alone
Thanks 👍
Lookin’ good! You’re moving right along. 👍
Thanks 👍
Great work on the cabin there Terry. Throwing it out there, see if you can pick up a second hand wood chipper and instead of burning your brush piles chip them and throw the chips on the driveway. Looking forward to seeing some more progress on the cabin.
I bought a used one a couple years ago and wasn't super happy with it. Granted it was a smaller yard version but it was a pain to pre cut all the crooked branches to fit in the shoot. Then they would constantly jam. A bigger more powerful one would probably work awesome but they are so much $$$$$
Look our little Terry has became a contractor a lot different then your previous job.lol looking good buddy
If this keeps up I'm buying a tool belt!
Sometimes $hit just works! Nice job with the siding
I'll take it!
Hi! a bummer about not making syrup this year. It looked like you bought a perfect pan for our old evaporator. Next year for sure!! We only did 1 boil at our sugar camp. It is just fun being outdoors and checking those trees. Your attitude is always great whether maple syruping or building. Thanks for another entertaining video. Hugs to River Dog!! Take care!
Hi guys! I was going to give you a call to see how your season was going and then I got side tracked. I hope you are both well! It would be fun to visit this summer sometime!
Temps in the mid 40s in Maine today. Bunkhouse is looking good.
Its been so back and forth for weather! What a weird year! LAst year I had to wear snowshoes for maple sap. This year I could wear shorts!
Hey Terry because it was La niña year it was exceptionally mild and wet maple syruping was horrendous and it was one of the worst seasons for most people that I've spoken to across the country.
Don't feel bad hopefully next year we're supposed to have El nino which will mean colder.
A+ for trying
Oh well. I'll trade a warm winter for syrup any year!
Looks great, sir, and thanks for the video
Thanks for watching!
Coffee and a tiny cabin video...great way to start the day. Thanks for taking us along. God bless you and yours.
Good morning Donna!
@@TRERUNSWILD 🌅❤️☕ good morning Terry!
On to the next adventure ❤👣🤠
Yep. looking forward to some different things for videos coming up. I think it's time to mix it up a little.
Ya win some, ya lose some ,Terry.
soon the Minnesota national bird will be out and you'll have other things to do !
(The mosquitoes! )
The ticks are already moving in. Maybe with it being so dry the mosquitos will be better this year.
Hey Terry, Great progress on the siding! Too bad the maple sap season didn’t work out. Always next year….. Take care & stay safe!
thanks Steve!
some pretty fency cuts around that window!things are looking good,to bad the maple sap didn't cooperate
I left out the part where I made a bad cut and ruined the sheet!
Well thats some good livin! Sorry about sap but weather is weather and people these days don't understand living the off grid life style is tough sometimes. Bunk house is lookin great! Keep the videos coming.
will do! Thanks BB!
Place is looking great!
thanks!
Great video, take care.
Thanks, will do!
your new build it coming along really nice
Thanks.
It's so great seeing your excitement and happiness when the siding fit without any issues. Sometimes things really do work out, huh? 😅
LOL! Because I didn't show the two sheets I ruined with bad cuts!!!!
Well the weather didn't cooperate this year with the sap production. Hopefully next year you will have better luck.
The cabin is looking great with the T1-11 on it. Have a great weekend!
No it sure didn't! Oh well. Like you say, next year!
Hello to you friend. And I have an unusual request. Or I forgot (but it's rather unbelievable because despite my beautiful 78 years I don't have SKLEROSIS yet or I just haven't read it). Write me your name in capital letters. I'm done with the April frosts. They have done a lot of damage to vegetables, so you have to take into account high costs when buying them in the future. It's starting to get warm and meteorologists are planning up to +27 degrees for the May weekend. Much health for you and your dog.😀😀
I hope things are well in Poland, my friend! Other than the weather! My name is TERRY some people call me TRE because that is the initials of my first, middle and last name.
my dog and I had a visit form a wolf last week at our offgrid camp.... my dog was inside, and he got about 20 foot from me before i noticed..... he didnt seem to mind me being there... i yelled and stomped and he took off, though not as fast or scared as i hoped.... have you guys ever had any visits from bears or wolves? river seems like a good boy hanging around camp but my guy is 2 years old and loves to run everywhere, def got me on edge. missed your vids great day sir
I had a wolf come into the yard last fall. He was chasing a coyote and wasn't paying attention until he got right to the edge. That is the only one I've seen in person there. Lucky for me, River was napping in the van and was completely oblivious.
Been a crazy season for us as well, we had too much going on and just couldn't make up to our property to collect sap. Your bunkhouse is coming along really nice.
Life always seems to get in the way at the worst times
Thanks for the video Terry ! You win some, you lose some & some times you get rained out . . . or something like that. It's just over two weeks until fishing season opens. I wonder if fishing with leeches would make a good RUclips video? 😂I'd never used leeches before I started fishing in Minnesota; it was a novelty for me.
I'm working a temp job with the walleye spawn. Might be a decent opener if the water stays warmer.
Glad to see you and The River Dog finally back up in the woods. We enjoy your videos.
Thanks 👍 I appreciate that!
I understand optimum temps for sap to run are lows around 28F at night and 40F during the day.
Yeah, we definitely weren't in that range. Maybe back in january for a couple weeks.
Put some 1 and 1/2 inch rock on the soft spot and it will get like cement as you drive on it
Sounds good. I need to do something before it gets worse.
Very nice , thanks !!!!
You are very welcome!
The smile on your face when things are going perfect ( priceless) baby steps. Great job. When all said and done you can look back at you videos of building the cabin and laugh at everything but just remember you built this yourself with no help.
So true! I was pretty please it fit!
It’s not just your area. We are in SE Michigan and the season was so fast. If you weren’t on it, it was here and gone. The weather has been very odd this year.
We had a two week warm up in January. People were tapping then. I wonder if a lot moved then. LOL! we shouldn't even be thinking about syrup in January!
@@TRERUNSWILD same happened here. Our bigger maple syrup farms around went ahead and started back then. By the time we realized it was going to be a weird winter/spring, it was just too warm during the day and nights ☹️😂
I didn't think the Midwest got sink holes in thought that was only a Florida thing
It's from where i tried to put a well in last fall. I thought I packed the ground but it must just be settling.
Cabin is looking great. Sorry the sap is not running
thanks Larry! Now I have to find a use for all the wood I had ready to burn for sap!
Good vid.
Glad you enjoyed it
What a bummer about the maple syrup, seems to be the theme though, it was troublesome for alot of folks up in Maine as well.
Yeah, what a weird year!
Congrats!!! The expression on your face was priceless. Your joy was so tangible. Great job!!
Small victories!
The bunk house is looking great! I am always learning something when watching your videos, like for instance, I never knew that siding came in one sheet and that you just cut it to fit, I always thought they came one plank/strip individually (whatever you call it). Also I laughed when you walked by your van, the door was open and River was resting in there and as you walked by you were talking to the camera, so Rivers expression made me think that he probably thinks you’re talking to yourself!🤣 (which I do anyway and it’s not to a camera). Does River go out on the road normally? He acted like he was going to go out there when that truck passed by, but you called him back. That dog is just gorgeous 🥰Who canned the spicy, pickled asparagus? I love that stuff. Sorry about the Maple sap, perhaps next year it will be better. Great video ❤️✌🏻
So siding can come in different forms. Usually, it is what you are thinking, planks or strips of planks. This particular stuff comes in sheets. I would have liked to have matched the cabin's wood siding but the Amish don't have any milled for sale currently. Plus theirs is green which means it will shrink quite a bit as it dries. Not a great option for building. River never wanders to the road. Never wanders at all actually. Typically he is within 50 feet of me. I canned the asparagus. First time I pickled it and it was really good. Usually I pressure can it but it gets so mushy. It was still firm pickled.
Get some road fabric and put over that spot then cover with gravel.
I'll look into that! Good tip. I wonder if I can get small amounts?
@@TRERUNSWILD you should be able to. If you can’t let me know I’ll see what I can do for ya. See if the place I work at will sell me what ya need. Just measure out the length you may need.
👋🏽🐾
Hello!
Glad to see your video. Sure have missed you & River Dog. Great work on the bunkhouse. You have every reason to be proud of yourself. 🤗🌸
Thank you Linneya! It's nice to be missed.
Nice to see u looking sweet 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Thank you 😊
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰💙
Wow, Terry your bunk house is looking fabulous! Great job you are doing! You’ve got the professional touch! ❤
thank you karen!
Timing is everything in life ! With all the timing we deal with why should we expect to get Mother Nature right every time 😂 great job cutting the T 111 around the windows and keeping it up off the Z flashing ! Nice work ! Take care T
Thanks Tony!
Liked seeing you eating outside, at your picnic table. Enjoy the beautiful day. Today in Connecticut it was absolutely gorgeous, tables are turning tonight to a deep freeze. Love the siding and the bunk house. Your so blessed!
Hi Donna! Yes, I'm loving the sunshine after the winter! Blessed beyond measure!!
Nice video always enjoy them maple syrup or not
The next couple vids are going to be a bit different for a change up.
Living my off grid cabin dreams vicariously through your videos. Not in the cards at the moment but it will happen in the future! Love the videos, Keep it up brother.
Thanks Dave!
Love your videos!!! Thanks for sharing your experiences and River dog. Did he work with you when you were on the police force?
No. he is just a pet. The dog I had before River was my police canine.
Put filter fabric down before the gravel
I'll look into it! Thx
The bestest boy is present
LOL! I love this comment!
Sucesso parabens pode comemorar
Little by little!
Great job on the siding 👍
thank you Robert
Hey Terry, I didn't realize how sensitive the maple sap harvesting is aroud the weather and how volitile the sap in the bags is - frustrating. Good to see RD out and about supervising dad. ;-) Be well and stay safe. Puck..
Hey Bud! Yeah, because of the slight sugar content it ferments and spoils in the warmth. Oh well, I'll take a warm winter over syrup any year!
Siding looks great Terry. You look like a seasoned pro putting it up. Well done! - Frank
thanks Frank. I left out the part where I made bad cuts and ruined two sheets!
@@TRERUNSWILD LOL! As you should. You should see my cutting room floor. 😄
Ja tinha comentado não fique chateado vc tem outros projetos bora la estou anciosa para ver a cabana acabada, até o próximo video, fique bem bora la
Comment 100 times!!! Helps the video stats!
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Hi Naresh!
I've had tomato plants come back up the next year. I'm not a green thumb by any means so I don't know if that's normal or not
must have been form a seed from a dropped fruit. Tomatoes are definitely a one and done plant.
What happened to the well sink hole? Maybe you can pull the pipe out now?
I'm guessing it just settled. But the weird thing is why not until now instead of last fall when it rained?
And the material you put on the outside is plywood or some other special waterproof insulation material?
The white paper stuff is a waterproof barrier. It has no insulation qualities, just moisture protection. Then the siding is a wood material that will be painted. It is already primed and ready for paint.
are you going to put a wood stove in the new build
Yep. Already got on on sale this winter. Plus a diesel heater for quick warm ups.
🖐😎👍
Hi Bud!
When did the sauna plan turn into bunkhouse?
How old is riverdog?
He will be 10 in August.
