A new chapter in the history books of the Canadian Championship was written on hallowed Canadian soccer ground.
Playing under the lights of Swangard Stadium, a modest ground dripping with history of its own, Burnaby's semi-pro League1 B.C. outfit TSS Rovers triumphed over Canadian Premier League side Valour FC 3-1 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Battle of the North.
It's a feat that no semi-pro team has ever accomplished in this competition before.
A pair of goals by former CPL-er Matteo Polisi, captaining the champions of L1BC, sandwiched around an Ivan Mejia second, proved the difference on the night, despite an Anthony Novak penalty threatening - or, perhaps, merely teasing - the idea of a comeback late in this hard-fought fight.
Yet, when the final whistle blew, it was head coach Will Cromack's underdogs who celebrated a miracle story, a dream come true, as Canada men's national team manager John Herdman watched on (and likely cheered on, too).
Cup competitions that pit teams from different leagues across the world are special because of nights like this. The magic of the cup is a phenomenon experienced around the world of football.
It's why those associated with the Canadian Premier League celebrate the result, too.
Yes, Valour FC will now lick their wounds. But, as Kristian Jack put it, we must protect, nurture, and celebrate these moments, too.
Congratulations to TSS Rovers - authors of a Canadian Championship legend.

Massive win for TSS Rovers, glad to see upsets in the Voyageurs Cup. Results like this improve the Canadian game across the board, fully deserved by TSS and Polisi was really impressive despite the miss from the spot.
Hopefully TSS can continue their run!

OMG. This is why one game elimination is so great. It allows this type of upset possible.

TSS completely dominated the match!! This is just like the FA Cup!
Love this format, we should include more league 1 clubs

League 1 Alberta starting 2024, it would be nice to see 2 from each play a knockout round earlier before the CPL teams play. Like the earlier rounds in FA Cup

One of my beefs with Canadian and US soccer is no relegation or promotion like European football. It would be great for the mid / bottom teams to have incentive as the season goes on. Would be great for the domestic sport. Congrats on the win

The previous CPL president said they are looking to introduce promotion and relegation in the future. I think currently the league needs to grow, it should expand at least to 16 teams with a decent size fanbase also ligue 1 also has to improve its infrastructure cuz as we see in this match, most of the ligue 1 stadiums looks like parking lots tbh.

canada thinks as a nation they have a chance in winning the 2026 world cup without even having a local pro league .what a circus , even california is more independent from the US than canada . why are we playing in MLS ? MLS itself is a clown league .Canada should have its own pro league like everyone else and invest more in infrastructure , only then we can hope to achieve anything in soccer .
