  • Sea World Whale Watch has witnessed, for the first time, a Humpback Whale feeding on baitfish only four nautical miles off the Gold Coast Seaway.
This is an incredibly rare occurrence.
The whale was opening its mouth wide and scooping up the fish in big gulps.
Seabirds and a large pod of Common Dolphins were also feasting on the baitfish.
Humpback Whales do not have teeth. Instead they have evolved long plates of hairy material along their upper jaws called baleen. The baleen filters their prey from the large amount of water ingested when scooping up fish.
The whales' baleen could be clearly seen in our video footage.
Humpback Whales can scoop up swimming pool sized volumes of water when feeding.
Humpback Whales are believed to only feed on krill in Antarctic waters. They fatten up on krill during the summer months in Antarctica and are not known to eat at all during their northern migration to the Great Barrier Reef.
