I felt like I should practice my Fox1 tactics a little bit as I was getting a little too comfortable with the Fox3 missiles. So I threw together a quick BVR fight and Takyon and I dueled it out with Fox1's. This video is one of those fights. I decided to upload it because I feel like there is something to be learned here in terms of the tactics. As always I am no way claiming to be expert and am simply sharing what I had learned in my time in DCS.
if you have something to add to the tactics I'd be happy to hear them so comment away. thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy the Video.

I wanted to tell you that you are very good and i would like to present some of your videos at our Academy if you dont mind(Credits included, of course). By the way, do you happen to have an F-16 mod?with f-16 cockpit and stuff? Our air force operates them and it would be very interesting to learn something about it before the real thing. I think the missile tracking is a bug but the proxy fuse is not. I think the proxy fuse is a temporary fix if you can call it like that ..
ED might have said well we have this thing going on where missiles keep tracking even without radar guidance so until we fix that IF lock is lost missiles will be dead ( no fuse detonation no nothing).
Try and see if the proxy fuses work when a radar is guiding them.
Another interesting thing will be to see if a "dead" missile can score a kinetic kill on you. If it can't then that validates my theory even more.

so for today's lesson, if you are packing six missiles that doesn't mean you have to kill six tangos with them or you are a bad pilot, missiles can be used to force the enemy into a position that you can kill them, and prevent them uping their chance of shooting your air frame down, as if they are to be used tactically and not as if you lose them in a fight then you are a bad pilot and you are fired from the air force... right?

    • @GrowlingSidewinder

I'm pretty sure that's not a bug. R-27ER's semi-active radar can guide a missile at any radio-contrast target, either it can be a friendly aircraft painting same target or, in your case, your very own radar provide guidance to these hostile missiles. However in close proximity it looks like missile get out of emission cone and proxy loses "sight", or its a proximity fuse bug. Anyway, pretty interesting case, great video.

Question about SARH's. My understanding is that they have on board RADAR that can track if they're close enough and have a valid return. Hence why the 3 at the end tracked. Is that not the case? I've been told before that they will go pit bull at some point but that it's really close to the target when they do. That seems to make sense with the name "Semi-Active", insinuating that they aren't fully active but do have in built tracking capabilities.

    • @311Gryphon
      @311Gryphon 5 лет назад

With so many more experienced people saying that SARH's don't track with the parent aircraft dead I have to assume I'm misinformed and "Semi-Active" just means they're guided but not by themselves, only with guidance from the parent craft. Good stuff. I really would have thought I'd pick that up after five years of playing DCS and watching DCS videos but I never have.

some serious matrix like stuff going on near the end lol
edit: i think those fox 1's actually were not tracking, it looked to me like they merely had gone to where you were going the last time they had information.
edit #2 , well if its a known glitch then maybe not :P

It was interesting to see the missiles keep tracking even after the enemy aircraft destroyed? Is it a possibility due to the nature of R-23 missiles IR targeting? The distance between the two aircrafts was less than 7 NM when the 3 missiles were launched. I read that R-23 uses a liquid nitrogen-cooled infrared seeker which required it be locked on to the target before launching, either by the launching aircraft's radar or IRST. It's effective range is 22 miles or 35 KMs. It can be a possibility that it wasn't a radar but IR lock. It's not clear in the video if it was R-23 or R-27 since both have IR capabilities as well as good range for Fox-1 engagements. That's why the missiles never stopped tracking. Again, a guess, not a pilot's experience to comment.

hi G.S. I'm curious if you were in the air force... the knowledge of radar usage and terminology is fantastic. I'd like to think that if you learned all this stuff without being in the air force, that I too can learn it and employ it as effectively as you do. love the vids. thnx.

A functioning proximity fuse would have detonated on all three occasions.

Tracking after lead aircraft went cold? Looks more like missiles flying straight, waiting for next input from aircraft.

So, from the looks of the position, you don't have to keep bore sight on an air frame to keep Fox-1s tracking? I didn't really know that. How big is the off-bore track?
