The Wikipedia article comes out (marginally?) in favour of the tiger en.wikipedia.o... I think that lions are natural born fighters, since they live in packs and fight to be top male in the pride. In such same species male on male bouts, such as rutting and dog fights, the fight usually ends when one is party is subdued since the objective is to establish superiority and mating rights not to kill the same species male.
Tigers on the other hand are solitary, not used to fights, but eating animals of other species, so may rather be natural born killers who may be more inclined to treat a lion opponent as prey. In the above video the tiger seems to be stalking the lion as it would prey, whereas the lion seems to be treating the potential fight as a sort of bout.
Thus as expressed in the wikipedia article on Lion's versus tigers when tigers and lions meet in the wild, or in random situations, the tigers tend to win. However, importantly, in circuses where the big cats have been pent up and made more aggressive, the lions tend to kill the tigers. I.e. perhaps if Lions become nasty, and fight to kill rather than show superiority, then perhaps their defensive armour (their mane) and attacking fighting style may give them an advantage. If boxers were to meet someone that fights to kill, poking eyes and kicking testicles, the latter would win initially until the boxers realised that fight was to the death, the superior skills would prevail. But then, tigers are generally bigger, so I am not at all sure.

The research is not good. All you did was refer to a bias trainer. In the big cage fight, the tiger who was killed was a sumatran tiger and the 2nd tiger killed had beatty throw ammonia in his face and made him lose the fight.
Actually its the complete opposite, tigers fight to kill whereas lions fight only to do takeovers. Lions are very serious about fighting but its mostly about the rankings. Tigers have more experience in dealing with stress and hunting (they have to hunt dangerous prey animals from a very young age), tigers do also have to fight in the wild.

I agree entirely. That was the point I was trying to make. Lions are more like boxers or MMA fighters, whereas tigers are killers, who treat opponents like prey.
However, perhaps, in situations (which do not occur in the wild) in captivity, such as circuses, where lions and tigers get to know each others fighting style, and specifically, lions get to know that tigers are fighting to the death, then that may make lions stronger than they would otherwise be because they too may stop "playing fair" and go for the kill like tigers.
It was upon this logic that I was persuaded by the trainer that I quoted, but as you say, he data set is very limited.

Irrespective of debate (that favours lion) I have opinion that tiger is truly not easy for lion to take down. I have seen many videos of enclosed tiger vs lion and I never see tiger retreated or backed down or feared of lion anytime. That does mean tiger is aware of his potential. Another fact - take the lion away from his pride, lion is all time loser. The pride gives mental support to fight. You can see group of lioness comes in support 😀.

I think that lions are natural born fighters, since they live in packs and fight to be top male in the pride. In such same species male on male *bouts*, such as rutting and dog fights, the fight usually ends when one is party is subdued since the objective is to establish superiority and mating rights not to kill the same species male.

I.e. perhaps if Lions become nasty, and fight to kill rather than show superiority, then perhaps their defensive armour (their mane) and attacking fighting style may give them an advantage.
