    Something else I dislike is a comment I read from someone about Catty not really havung food accessories. I don't think they meant anything by it, but it felt like it perpetuated the stereotype that a plus sized person is only define by the food they eat. Like, Catty mostly has music accessories since she's a popstar who just so happens to also be plus sized.
    My only complaint with this doll is with her outfit. It's not terrible, but i prefered the extra details her concept art had. However, the doll is so pretty and the face is just precious.

      @psychotophatcat 9 месяцев назад +7

      Is she the first one in G3 to not have food accessories? From a purely consumer point of view, wanting all dolls to have thematic but similar items, I could understand that, but I can also see it being a low-key nasty comment too.

    She reminds me of the chonky black cat I had as a kid, I used to put pink feather boas on him and he seemed to genuinely love looking so fancy and fabulous. Choosing a cat character specifically to be bigger is honestly such a cute and sweet idea! I do still love g1 Catty too (she reminds me of the skinny, gangly little black cat I have now) and I think that g3 Catty’s outfit could be tweaked to be a little more flattering, but the existence of g3 Catty doesn’t make g1 Catty stop existing or stop being able to be appreciated, so I’m just glad that we have such a diverse variety of cute, fancy black cat dolls to adore!!

    As a plus size woman, the criticism towards Catty was very hurtful, not because of people hating a doll, but because of the hateful comments towards size and shape. It does not affect me anymore as an adult, but I can remember 10 y/o me wanting to have the cool Bratz outfits and being told horrible things about how my body would not look good on them, or how Bratz dolls look like sl*ts.
    I was so happy to finally see Catty, but people commenting on her body and being so nasty is just disgusting. Imagine kids hearing those words from their parents, on the internet, what do those kids will growing up believing, or saying to other kids? As adults, we need to move on from the belief that only one shape is beautiful.
    Saying that a doll is ugly just because they are fat is wild to me, because if that is your opinion, it is not limited to dolls... I've had my fair share of "how come you go to the gym and you're still fat" and it baffles me how ignorant people are. The influence of social media have made people delulu and made them think that commenting bodies is normal and chill.

      I know plus size people who eat healthier than me. People are stupid thinking all fat people over eat.
      We all have different metabolisms. I struggle to gain weight. I lived across from a Mc Donald's and would eat it twice a day hoping I would gain weight. But I didn't.
      And even if they do overeat, so what? I would rather be fat than be a judgemental bitch!

      I have never seen so much hate in the world as I have seen in the past couple of years on social media. It is incredibly sad and disheartening. And it is everywhere - Star Wars, Pokémon, Disney, dolls, Sailor Moon.... Every fandom I like. It's depressing! And I'm sorry you grew up with those viewpoints around you, but glad that you are able to dismiss it as an adult ❤

    I'm a fat person and I adore seeing the range of bodies in G3! I love Catty being fat and glamorous! But I do wish her neck and chin were thicker because they feel a bit slim compared to the rest of her build. This is a common mistake I see when people design fat characters, forgetting the neck and chin also get fat. I'm hoping for a lot more fat characters (and characters of all shapes and sizes) in the future!

      Yes! That's what I was thinking! Her arms are also very skinny as well compared to the rest of her body. If they were to make plus sized dolls, I wish they would make the proportions make sense like the skinny ones instead of slapping on a thick torso and thighs.

    I think it's crazy how people say G3 Catty is promoting unhealthy eating habits and the like, but defend G1 to hell and high water with "They're just dolls! They don't promote any body expectations!" I know it's the fatphobia, but why do dolls affect body images only when it's not a skinny doll? (And even then, I remember people were like this with G3 when it launched in general with the thin characters)
    I'm also very heated on this topic if you can tell haha but as someone who's been fat my whole life, I know society had the bigger influence on my poor body image (and that's what pushed for dolls to all be thin and "perfect") but in terms of dolls I never saw myself in them where others could. In terms of play that's so important and is a discussion people really need to chew on without a blanket "dolls don't cause bad body images!! it's just society!!" like girl they're a product of it 😭

  • @skeletized
    @skeletized 9 месяцев назад +25

    that's so stupid. one of my favorite things about G3 is that they varied the body types, i think all the new sculpts are super cute, variety adds so much to fashion dolls!

  • @heckyeahponyscans

    Really good video.
    So, I've noticed this thing where doll collectors (in general) really bridle at criticisms of "too skinny" proportions of popular doll brands like Barbie (back when she only had one body mold), G1 Monster High, Winx Club, etc. They frame it as "oh, so you're saying a girl sees ONE DOLL and instantly gets an eating disorder?!?!?!?" A defensive reaction, because they love those dolls and they think critiques are insulting them and their collection. But to me the reaction to dolls like G3 Draculaura and G3 Catty (and Curvy Barbie when she was new) proves, yeah, there is actually a problem. Not with any single doll brand. More like . . . the sum of the parts. Decades and decades of (mostly) really thin fashion dolls.

    I was never really into dolls as a kid but G3 Monster High is the reason I got into dolls! My first introduction to G3 MH was seeing Draculaura and the fact that she had a different body model than what had been typical for other dolls I was familiar with. When G3 started, I was a bit heavier than I am now and I felt really seen by Draculaura's design. One of the main reasons she ended up being my first G3 doll is because of the fact that she is a little chubbier and I saw myself in that! Inclusivity in doll lines totally matters!

    I really WISH I had a doll like Catty when I was growing up! Thin people seem to struggle to understand how much it sucks to never see a doll that looks like you. Not having plus size dolls makes it feel like bigger bodied people aren't as worthy of being seen, and in the case of fashion dolls like monster high, don't deserve to wear cool clothes. I will absolutely be buying a Catty, maybe even 2 to try making clothes for her because I don't love her dress as it is

    I’m not a fan of the dress (especially those puffy sleeves), but her being plus size makes me feel really good. I’ve since lost weight, but once upon a time (between 2021-2023) I was between 180-190lbs at 5’3. I was a chunky fella. I felt terribly insecure for that. My mother is plus size (+200lbs at 5’1) and she is very insecure for that. Seeing such a beautiful doll represent plus size women/people in general is heartwarming. She really is gorgeous and I’m incredibly excited to add her to my collection. I was genuinely really excited to discover that she’s plus size too
    Edit: Also, just because I lost weight and am skinnier, it doesn’t make me healthier. I struggle with just not having an appetite/desire to eat - I dont actively choose to starve myself but my stress/anxiety makes the chemical in my brain (that tells you to eat) not work. At least to my understanding. I would argue I’m probably more unhealthy now than I was before (minus no longer carrying about my body shape and working out with dumbbells to reverse muscle atrophy). i just don’t eat enough anymore

    Alot of the G1 “stans” are not proper fans, alot of them are just people who watched the movies when they young and have nostalgia based off of it, and now have some vague idea of what monster high was. Which is why they tend to be wrong 98% of the time. They dont actually like monster high, they like what they believe it is. (Y2K, Goth, Angsty, Edgy, all things that it isnt.)
    Unfortunately these same people also miss like the main part of MH which was embracing your freaky flaws. Its really draining, like i be on the battlefield in comment sections on tiktok sometimes. Alot of G3s hate just comes from pure ignorance/bigotry.

    I don't have a single barbie doll. Yet. This year I was thinking of finally buying myself one with a Made to Move body. Plus, I've never been skinny, so of all the dolls, curvy Barbies can represent me the most. I'm not as big as Catty, and not as small as Drac. So I chose 3 dolls that I can actually buy and, for the sake of curiosity, I sent them to my mother to find out which one she likes the most, because out of 3 possible I did not like any face 100%.Mom didn't even have time to hear my question, as she asked if I sent her pregnant barbies, because they are so fat and with folds on the stomach. To say that I was upset is an understatement. I tried to end the topic as quickly as possible, but my mother insisted and repeated that "this is just my opinion, they are ugly and fat and belong in the garbage can."
    So, I'm saddened, but not surprised, that Catty was treated this way. I'm not in love with this design, but not because of her body size. The boots lack detail and I miss her long hair. But, after the situation with Drac, the situation with Catty was too expected

    On a serious note, I will say back when G3 Draculaura came out I was like "hmmm her being thicker kind of makes no sense to me" Specifically for her since she is UNDEAD and the whole idea of monster high mostly was that they are monsters and id say maybe 50% characters were dead so them having extremely weird thin bodies made sense to me on a lore level.
    NOW when it comes to the living animal characters, I don't really see how her being bigger is a issue at least for me. I HIGHLY DOUBT that those people complaining are collectors.

    I really appreciate this video as a person who is normally quite thin, and gained 20 lbs over covid. I know that not a lot of weight for some people, but being small boned, it really shows on me. I've been struggling so much with my self esteem, and you reminded that I can be bigger, even though it's not best for me, and still feel good about myself. I know that's not the point of this video, but it still touched me. And I do remember seeing many beautiful larger people. I love Catty G1, and I also like her G3 version as well. I think she is really cute and sweet looking. I just don't like her dress. I wish it had been closer to her original. Just because she is a larger doll, doesn't mean she couldn't have had a beautiful elegant, flowy dress. If I get the chance to purchase her, I am going to make her another dress that I think will be more suited to her. And I do agree that this doll will help people who are larger to feel more comfortable and happy. It will also help people who are struggling with feeling like they have to fit into a mold. I think larger, smaller, various shades, etc, are all good dolls; and we All need that representation. I hope I didn't sound silly in the beginning, but this video touched me so much that I was crying, and thinking that even if I don't lose the weight, I can adjust, and still be happy with myself. Let's take Marvel's Blob character as an example. When a figure of him is released it never generates a lot of talk about how it might encourage unhealthy eating habits. He's The Blob and he's supposed to be big and chunky. However, you would get people talking if Hasbro made a skinny ethnic version of The Blob. It wouldn't even be the same character anymore- but you could always justify the character by using his name, Frederick J. " Fred " Dukes, and saying he's from an alternate universe where he either didn't become a mutant or got different mutant powers. So on that note we can simply say this Catty is from an alternate Monster High universe (which G3 pretty much is, considering how different all the characters are). Either take it or leave it. Some of the new dolls are fun but I'll always prefer the original G1 characters and their universe. With that said- I'd still love it if they'd give us the cafeteria lady in all her XXX size glory.

    I love that G3 is adding a lot of diversity in body types. I think any MH fan who would say such disgusting things about a curvy doll doesn’t really understand what MH is in the first place. It’s about accepting your freaky flaws and EMBRACING your uniqueness, not making rude comments on a body type. I think that Mattel deserves props for including multiple different body types in G3. They could’ve easily stopped at Draculaura’s mold but they went further and I will always applaud them for that. I think Catty is a beautiful base doll, I’m just personally not a fan of the execution of her outfit. HOWEVER I do not tolerate discrimination of any kind, if your hating on a dolls body type that tells me more about you as a person. If your a true fan of MH than your a fan for the right reasons, which is embracing differences and not discriminating against them.

  • @KoujiAlex
    @KoujiAlex 9 месяцев назад +2

    Chiming in with my personal take on this topic. While I completely disapprove of any fatphobic or rude comments that have been made towards these or some other of the G3 redesigns in regards to body changes, some other collectors/fans simply do not like them because they are very resistant to change, and I personally think that's ok as well. It's a very similar situation when characters in film are gender and/or race-bended. I think inclusion in any form of media is very important, call it: gender, race, type of body, and sexual orientation, but a very large group does not like the idea of taking a pre-existing character and re-doing them just for the sake of it. When it is done on characters that people already love as they were, that's when the division happens. Personally, it took me a minute to warm to Draculaura's change of body, but when I saw how well her doll looked, I started liking her redesign. Also, being in this weird limbo of G1 Collector dolls vs G3 Playline dolls releases that Mattel decided to stick to, leaves MH Collectors who want to be part of both Generations in a weird spot where they are constantly changing their beloved characters, but suddenly they are revisiting the older designs in these majestic collector concepts that leaves everyone confused and further fuels the debate of which Generation is better. If Mattel continues with this route, the controversy will continue among fans and collectors of the series.

    I'm especially disappointed in the Monster High Fandom. G3 Catty is built just like I am. We're approximately the same weight and same build. All of this hate and shame towards a doll who looks like me is frankly hurtful. I'm glad you spoke out about this.

    I grew up on blond Barbie because in the 80s in Europe that's all we had. As a brown girl, I believe it wasn't good for my self esteem in a world that valued mostly Eurocentric features at the time (still does but there is a bit more diversity these days)
    That's why I think representation is extremely important. Everyone should find a doll they can identify to ...
    Honestly if you complain about Catty, you can also complain about G1 being unrealistically skinny🤷‍♀️
    Catty is objectively a cute doll. Only her outfit isn't perfect! Her boots are too bright and too high though, it drowns her. I wish we'd see more legs, it'd give the outfit room to breathe.
    I love seeing diversity in dolls, so I want to see more body types! And shorter legs, petite frames, curves, different skintones, textured hair etc etc

  • @BuoyB
    @BuoyB 9 месяцев назад +3

    You made some super important points and I’m so glad this video exists in the world now 😭
    First one being that BEING THIN DOES NOT MEAN YOU’RE HEALTHY! The misconception that being fat or curvy means you’re unhealthy is extremely toxic, especially when on the opposite end of the scale (literally) is people who are too thin, maybe suffer from eating disorders, have stunted growth, etc etc being the face of beauty and aspirational. Many people who are “overweight” can still be healthy and exercise regularly and their body doesn’t necessarily represent their strength, endurance, and overall health. On top of that, there are genetic components to weight, and also health conditions, which often go beyond a diet.
    Children seeing hundreds of pencil thin dolls like Barbie, G1 MH, LOL OMG, and near every other doll brand of the past has probably caused more poor image issues in them than seeing one or 2 fat dolls existing with a purpose and with no bad intentions.
    The last point of the monster high characters adoring Catty FOR her size (and not DESPITE it), and hating the “fans” that choose to hate her for being bigger is very impactful. I hope it strikes people that their favorite characters would despise them for having such hateful views of what makes someone different and unique, especially in MH where that matters the most. Bigotry is not allowed or welcome in this community and I’m happy monster high is committing to combating those mindsets head-on

    I love seeing more body diversity in dolls. Thats one of the things I appreciate Barbie and Monster high doing ( RIP RH diversity). It enrages me when people fat shame and go on and on about obesity. Some of my wresting teammates in college were heavy weights and i can tell you they worked twice as hard as the light weights or mid weights.
    There's some amazing photographs by Howard Schatz in his 2002 book "Athlete" showing all the body diversity of top athletes in different sports.
    They are PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES!!!!! IN BETTER SHAPE THAN MOST HUMANS!!!
    I highly encourage everyone to google his photos. I promise you won't regret it.

    I was never angry that she was big, I honestly think it's really stupid to get angry over a bigger doll, because at the end of the day it's a doll and you don't have to buy it. I'm just confused on why her proportions are so wack, her arms and neck don't really mesh with the thickness of her legs and torso.

  • @calico3202

    As someone who started collecting dolls in 2023 in their late 20s, it was G3's diversity that got me into collecting MH at all. G1 looked kinda cool to me as a kid but i was deep in my "not like other girls" / "pretend i don't like super girly things" phase. Plus, as you mentioned, their bodies were super thin and i still don't quite click with them.
    G3 is doing amazing things in terms of representation and diversity, and i just can't understand how some people don't see that and would rather get worked up over 'fat' dolls - draculaura isn't even fat, i wish people would stop going on about that - and how they 'promote' something to children that is supposedly harmful. The reality is that fat and curvy people exist, and odds are that everyone knows someone with those proportions personally (their parent, aunt or uncle, a friend, and so on) - so why should dolls, which imitate real people in plastic form, not look like them?

    I 100% agree with absolutely everything you said, couldn't have said it better myself.
    The only thing I don't like is her outfit, I don't like any part of it but has nothing to do with her body type.
    It can mean so much for someone seeing a doll similar to them, for example when I first saw Abbey it made me so happy cause there were finally a doll that is tall and curvy (like me). I personally never seen a doll like that before, cause from my experience curvy dolls (if made) are usually short, it's like they forget taller people can be curvy as well.
    Also side note I still can't believe there are people who thought/thinks G3 Draculaura is fat like she's barely curvy (she only has somewhat curvy hips imo).

    I do have a problem with the catty body type.... specifically that she's the first and only mh doll of this body type. We shud have gotten iris first! Iris is this body type in the show and while iriss fashion isn't incredible ( I assume her actual doll wud hav a different outfit) it got me excited for an iris doll. Then turns out we get catty first. Misdirection aside she's fucking pwecious. I'm glad that she turned out better than her leak and while I didn't love the bow sleeves at first seeing it all together her look grew on me immensely. So here's the deets of my changes, paint jobs. It's all in painted details or lack thereof. Good news is I happily do customs like that myself. Like adding black is the easiest and funnest custom ever it's just sharpie, skills, fun. I also want to give her some silver details and a silver nose. Also the micro braids mixed in with the straight hair is fantastic I love multiple textures
    Body wise I'm in between draculaura and abbey with Cleo to Frankie height, and I don't have much of any issue with my size. So while I'd love skinny too, I def prefer the thicker sturdier bodies and do feel like it's true to mh. This new gen has put inclusion at the forefront and it hammers home the core meaning and message of the brand itself. So while some people can hate on fashions just not being like g1, dolls like catty solidify why this new gen needs to exist.
    Also give us iris. We need the characters from the show in greater priority. Here's it's weird that cattys doll is coming BEFORE her show debut
    Honestly my biggest complaint about g3 is removing ghoulia from the core lineup and not giving us more ghoulia. Especially now that she has the new face up

    Dude I actually really love this doll I think she’s adorable, it’s sad to see people reacted so negatively to her new body type. Differences in dolls is what makes them beautiful and relatable to the buyer (ex. I was so happy to see the full body freckles on Victoria from rh, I have them too but not as many) I understand people may not be to fond of change, but I’m glad they made catty big and beautiful in this gen and it’s absolutely a step that needs to be taken more often in doll companies, I hope we get to see a g3 iris doll as well. All bodies are beautiful and dolls would be a great way to show this 🫶💕

    Catty is one of my favourites and her G3 doll is adorable. I'm not surprised that people are reacting this way, they did the same thing to Draculaura and she's only a little chunky. It honestly kind of has the same energy as when people were freaking out over Star Trek "going woke" years ago, or whatever the buzz phrase was back then. Some people really don't understand the point of the franchises they're supposedly fans of and are seemingly just there for the aesthetic

    I’m not necessarily mad that they mad her chonky, I’m mad that they changed her , they changed everyone! That’s why I’m so pissed off at the new gen, they had no reason to fuck with the old gens designs, they were perfect they were forever iconic. I know the wanted to be diverse and inclusive but why couldn’t they literally make a new gen? Make new monsters like their kids or something?? Why the fuck did they think that was a good idea like bffr?? Not only did the change catty but the made draculaura a witch . WHY THE HELL DID THEY CHANGE HER SCARITAGE??? They made lagoons blue lagoona PINK , we don’t even talk about claw fern and how the butchered her . Cleo is no longer the mean icon we know and love- like they made such drastic changes that monster high isn’t even monster high anymore:/ Agian I have nothing against plus sized people, the 🏳️‍🌈 community, or any other community that’s in the new gen. I have beef against them for changing monster high instead of just making a new gen like normal fucking people .

      Normally I don’t bother responding to stuff like this but?? I completely get it if you like g1 better but it’s extremely commonplace for brands to do what MH has done here. Scooby Doo, My Little Pony, Strawberry Shortcake, Addams family…reinventing old characters to fit a new generation is very normal. Again, I understand if you don’t personally connect with this gen but it’s not like they ruined MH by shaking things up a bit idk
      This isn’t like an attack against you so I apologize if I come off as being rude I just genuinely don’t get it 😅

    People just need to get over, themselves and quit living in ignorance, if you dont want the doll when she drops then dont buy her plan and simple. People always have to shit, on something they dont agree on and i mean i get it, but dont take it to this extreme on a character who which we haven't seen in years, and is wanting to make a more modern coming back, for this brand new generation here. I will definitely buy her, when shes available and give minor painted details with her doll. Thank you for sharing this video, i agree with everything u said about G3 in general one of the reasons why i like G3 more, than g1 is the difference between body types and sizes plus finally liking the character's a lot more in G3 rather than g1 i maybe be new to monster high dolls but both generation's are good overall.

My friend has a cat who is a huge boy, so even animals come in plus sizes. Barbie has made a few dolls plus size dolls! Overly thin figures doesn't equal healthy, there are big girl who are active and healthy! Everyone deserves to have fun with their fashions. 😉👍

    The doll over all is cute, I just wish the outfit was better, though something going down the line is that now I am noticing with dolls like Drac, Abby, and now Catty it’s gonna be hard for a play value for them all to switch clothes and what not. Nothing against the bigger body dolls, that’s just something I noticed a lot of people say which is fair.
    The only other character we see in the show that could be made into a doll and is Catty’s new body type is Iris. But even then Catty will only ever have her main outfit if she isn’t given other dolls down the line. I like her, the play aspect will be a bit different and she would be excluded from sharing clothes with the other characters which makes me sad, but I don’t think the doll is ugly because she is bigger. Her face is one of the prettiest gen three faces. I’m just disappointed that her outfit I’ll be it is simple, isn’t like the concept art. I don’t have one doubt in my mind they didn’t have a black version of the belt and silver boots they could have had with her.
    No one deserves hate with how they are. I can understand the play value is limiting Catty so I hope down the line they make other bigger bodied dolls who all can share clothes, but this doll will probably be so important to a lot of younger kids and I think that’s what matters at the end of the day. Great video ❤
