We have been getting a lot of comments asking about the devastating fires here in Australia. We're really lucky we're in a part of the country that hasn't been effected thankfully.
The green party and their environmentalists have been stopping hazrad reduction burns for years. Turning Australia into a tinder box. There is also the drought which we get every ten yrs or so. Then there are the arsonists. 200 arrested so far.
You prolly dont give a shit but if you guys are stoned like me atm you can stream all of the latest movies on InstaFlixxer. I've been watching with my brother for the last few weeks xD
We dip in plain candle wax We don't paint. Boxes last at least 10 years without further treatment We use pine wood for our boxes. Remember that AFB needs to be at 160 C for 10 minutes to kill the spores When you put the box in wax that is 160 - 170 C , it can cool the wax below 150 So if you are dipping new boxes, then 10 minutes is fine. If you are wanting to sterilize the boxes, we dip for 20 minutes. This actually works out roughly to 10 minutes at 160 and a warm-up period from the drop to 150 For temperature reading use one of those Lazer guns that give you an instant digital temperature reading We are in South Africa
When I was making candles, "Plain Candle Wax" was the 5 kg paraffin Wax slabs that John is using in his wax mix. That probably means that the boxes he has dipped probably don't really need to be painted for a similar period. By the time they need dipping again they could use a fresh dipping to kill off any AFB . That might limit any future AFB to any introduced bees. Be a good management strategy anyway.
6:20 "We aren't nice to each other, are we?" I agree. We should definitely be much nicer! At my age of 53, the one thing I really think the world needs is that we get far more humble than today and put ourselves in the shoes of our fellow citizens. That would automatically make us nicer and in helping mode.
Lololol!!!! Mental note....do not drink coffee while watching these videos...or you will have to clean your iPad or computer screen!!!! I literally spit out my coffee because he made me laugh too much!!!
LMAO BBM, 4:03 "give me 8 so we can screw $hit up" Really? And when the thermometer looks like a radiator cap I nearly lost it for all time. Thanks for a great episode and cool info and a lot of laughs along the way. Well done John on some coo editing and new music :)
Basically you are supposed to wait until the foam stops, the foam is the water within the timber boiling off. Once it stops foaming, the cooling process draws the wax into the now dry and empty cells of the timber. particularly end grain which is always a painting and damp issue. I guess the move into the shed was so that you could have a Jewish stocktake, and so you could test your fire insurance lol
Love the video! I’m not clear on if these boxes you’re dipping have previously had AFB or it’s a preventable treatment. Here in Florida if AFB is found the entire hive has to be torched. Maybe I’ll rewatch the video and see if I just missed the answer to my question. Praying the fires are controlled soon...so terrible!
He's just trying to prevent anything because they are used, I am Very Confident that he wouldn't just dip them and hope it works so it doesn't ruin his whole operation if he Knew they had AFB spores in them, but since they are used he's trying to kill anything that might be lurking
I am not that old but I am slowly converting my wood working shop to hand tools only, sure I will still have a few power tools but I collect and use Braces and bits they never need charging and will never break plus they are really nice to work with.
I have an old "Fowlers Vacola" thermometer from a bottling kit that measures up to 240 deg. F. At least it is calibrated to 240. I've been using to see what the temp. is inside the house. Measures 20C at present.
Can you please do a video about Topbar hives. This is where my interest is as a hobby beekeeper and swarm catcher. A nice Topbar Hive in my clients backyard in a new Bee Garden as part of my new Buisness Model. I Love learning from you and you always make me in a good mood. ❤️fr.🇨🇦
Well typically it is done with new unpainted boxes, the wax penetrates into the pores of the wood sealing the wood from moisture/dirt/bacteria/viruses. This prevents the wood from decaying, makes it easier to clean, the wax is bee/food safe, ants and termites will not eat waxed boxes. Typically waxed boxes last about twice as long as painted ones (though you can paint the box right after dipping before the wax dries, after the wax dries the paint won't stick) reducing equipment replacement costs. I'm not sure how well it will work on painted boxes, though it will be hot enough to kill bacteria/viruses.
I have never seen a painted box dipped. How does the wax penetrate the wood evenly, or are you dipping them in order to kill AFB spores? That is not an option in the USA, radiation or burning the affected equipment are the only options.
A BIG Hello my friend From South Carolina. USA. So where’s your residences. I’m Thinking ENGLAND. My family moved in 1737 after purchasing lands from king HENRY. This was the new promise lands moving from Bern SWITZERLAND. WE Have family in England also. The Famous GUNTERS. I’ve been watching your videos. Your really good at this work. Be serious ok but have your fun too. Later. Ken
I am arguing with folks that say you have to burn boxes and I tell them they can be treated with a clorine bath. I'll be looking for your dohickie and wax coating my hives

I am glad you and the wife and cameraman and the girls are safe! Love your videos!
usa is starting to hear the fires were from years of regulations to not allow thinning . NOT from climate change.

So good to see you back at it
I love your positive attitude. Stay safe!!!
I did this , the stack of waxed boxes where 15 boxes high, my bees found it , I can not explain there excitement, it was a Frankenstein’s moment..
Sounds like we should wax our swarm trap boxes before we set them out.

probs be better to have given ya wife the new strainer lol
Im s fan now bush bee man. I like your positive can fobatyiyide. Keep sharing. Cheers
What were your conclusion regarding the Paradise (EPS foam) boxes ?
that was bloody funny
You need a Infrared thermometer to check the temp plus it doesn't to anything so it won't get waxed up.
Basically you are supposed to wait until the foam stops, the foam is the water within the timber boiling off.

He had to deal with afb sometime back and the only way was to torch it all. I forget which episode.
@@McDuffin oh I see..my bad.
On your dipping tank how many lb. of wax do you think it takes . Also Can you give the size of your dipping tank. Thanks

Just a little bit ;)

@@Adamskys I love him.... Jolly-Ol-Soul 😎😎😎
How much wax is needed to fill the wax-melter, and how much wax gets used after dipping a number of boxes?
If you get a candy thermometer, they should only be about five or six dollars and probably in the cooking supplies. They also float. Hope that helps
Another beekeeping job that requires copious amounts of liquor, designated sober Watcher to watch the thermometer, for carefuling purposes... lol
I am not that old but I am slowly converting my wood working shop to hand tools only, sure I will still have a few power tools but I collect and use Braces and bits they never need charging and will never break plus they are really nice to work with.
Enjoy all the commentary, but was the wax hot enough for the first few boxes?

Out of curiosity - what does this do?

You lack science. Fire only dispersed spores in the plume.
Hey, I like you and your video style :-) Keep on! May I ask what the price of the wax is down-under? BR from Germany Marc
Can you give us a fire update? Hope you are safe!

You should have scrapped the paint off before wax dipping.
