First Start Up, Burn Off, & Importance of Priming on any Pit Boss Pellet Grill | Pit Boss Pit Stops

- Any Pit Boss grill gives you a function called Priming - this is important because it gives you manual control of the speed of the Auger.
So when the pellets have run out or you're starting your first grill, there are no pellets lined up in the auger to be fed to the ignitor which starts your fire.
When the grill starts, it runs the auger and igniter for 4 minutes straight no matter what.
If the pellets don't reach the ignitor in time, no fire will start.
Make SURE you PRIME by holding down the prime button until you hear pellets drop into the fire pot, or see smoke. You will hear the trickling, like dropping a penny into a soda can.
As for the P Setting...
P0 = FASTEST
P4 = Default
P7 = SLOWEST
If it were the middle of the unforgiving Alaskan winter, (which a Pit Boss will still run in) you would want to try a P Setting of 0 to counter the naturally frigid winter air and outside temperatures.
On the other hand, if you were cooking in the Sahara desert, your grill might already be 200 degrees inside from the stifling desert sun.

Good video. One IMPORTANT THING: Keep your lid open while starting the grill. If closed, the initial smoke and fumes may cause it to explode !!!
YESSS not sure why so many miss this step then complain of parts failures and all kinds of stuff, they just walk up and turn it on and never open it, the manual screams this step.
@@paidinfull5950how long should I leave it open
Ahhh I've been scared to use mine since the last time. I was waiting on it to heat up before throwing on a brisket and it was smoking like crazy. Just billow and billows of smoke. I turned it off and as soon as I stepped away BOOM. Lid flew open and there was ash and pellets everywhere. Think I had to change my shorts too.
How did his not explode with the lid closed the whole time they should really take this video down and really express how important it is to leave lid open
Can't stress this enough. Surprised he didn't say that.
1:05 Holding the 'Prime' button does not give the auger a "burst of speed". It prevents the auger from pausing, so the pellets arrive more quickly.
Just got my first pit boss today, storming like crazy right now but when that’s over the journey begins!!
Spot on. Just put together mine, and couldn't get it to ignite. I turned it on, dialed to smoke setting, held the primer button. Took forever to get the pellets through the auger and by that time the igniter sequence had completed which made me think the igniter was bad. i then watch a dozen youtubes and read that many forums on igniter troubleshooting. took apart the bottom plate to the hopper, stripped out half the screws, had to drill the heads off, then checked continuity on the wires and connections, all was good, snapped the connection back and tried again. This time the Auger was primmed, pellets were in the pot and away it went!. SO....prime first, then turn the dial to smoke.....lesson learned
You could also load the fire pot by hand with pellets if you don’t want to wait for the prime.
I bought one of these. auger motor went on it. Waited 3 hours on customer service to hear that the part is on back order. Gave them my information and they said would send one when they become available. That was back in September. Ive tried calling them back and just to be waiting for hours. I loved the smoker when it ran but the customer service could be a little better.
Got my first pellet grill today, 700 “The Classic”. Came prebuilt, so I was a bit worried, but outs holding strong and doing exactly what this tutorial mentions. Thank you for making it, I’m looking forward to putting the smoker to years of good use.
Just got one of these as well. How is it lasting? Any problems?
Thank you! Short and straight to the point! My first time grilling ever so I'm excited and this video gave me some confidence going in.
Thank you BBQ Bob- we just got our first pit boss & were told we had to prime for like 10 hours so this was very very helpful & less stressful
It's 10 mins not hours
Just got ours the 820D3 from Academy last night. Going to do the initial burn tonight and get to cooking this week. So ready to use this pellet grill. Its our first one, coming from charcoal to propane to now pellet.
Also keep the slider CLOSED during burn off so you don’t just cook the lid
This is what I scrolled through the comments for, thank you.
Great tips! My friends with Pit Boss grill made it sound so simple but neglected to mention pre- cooking requirements. Very helpful. Thanks.
Just bought my first pellet pit boss smoker pro and this start up video help ALOT thank you for the learning.
Yo! Me too! Excited about it, but I’ve got lots of learning to do!
Just got a Pit Boss Austin XL last night, put it all together, and will be doing the first burn off today after work. Cannot wait to start cooking on it.
Something else that’s very important is about every few times you cook you want to clean all the ash out of the grill otherwise the ash burns up in the pot and accumulates. I found out the hard way and these grills will smoke excessive and get very hot. Mine blew the lid right open. If you start smoking excessive, turn it to off position, open the lid and let it burn off. Then clean all the ash out and start over. Fantastic smoker grill. I love it. I use it a few times a week going on three years👍.
Yep. I was surprised to see him suggesting to heat it up with the lid down here. That's a big no-no and can create a huge backdraft that can cause an explosion.. even blowing the lid up or right off. Plenty of youtube videos showing it happening, as well. Dense smoke can ignite.. and he had way too much smoke going there to have the lid closed.
Just got the 820 Pro from Lowe’s. HUGE upgrade over my old Masterbuilt!
Adam Johnston has
Exact same upgrade I just made! Looking forward to using it today.
Just got one today gonna do initial burn off then throw some chicken on !!!!!!!!!
Just finished assembling and going through the initial fire up of my new Pit Boss PB1100PSC2 Pro Series Combo Grill. Here are a few observations, for what it's worth.
I'm a genuine rookie, so smokers are all new to me. However, after purchasing this from Lowes and getting it home for assembly, I was overwhelmed by the process. If you're like me, a ready, fire, aim kinda guy, you want to make sure to read the instructions, step by step, thoroughly before each step. I tend to think I'm smarter than the engineers who design stuff and get myself in trouble, having to undo/redo steps which is maddening. The instructions are good - not perfect - but good. I found they miss some simple details that could make the whole experience easier, such as alignment points, etc.
After getting it fully assembled, I was disappointed that it was so difficult to find this video on first start up. I went through various RUclips videos, some good, others not so much. This one by BBQ Bob did the trick - short and sweet and to the point. Now I'm finally ready to throw on some nice fat boneless pork chops for the maiden voyage - wish me luck!
I love my pitboss 820d3. There is only 1 issue I have. Pit boss decided to make the ports for the stick thermometers a different size then all the rest. So if you have a Thermoworks temp reader, the probes won't fit. So being Thermoworks readers are way more accurate, I can never use the pitboss probes. Every other brand is compatible except for pitboss 🤷
I just got my 1st pit boss pallet smoker and this is very helpful. Thank you🙏
Just bought myself a new Pit Boss 1150. Really hoping it has the updated PID controller.
Im scrapping mine. It doesnt smoke. I put it on smoke setting and it just burns perpetually and doesnt stop at the right temperature.
I've read and seen many suggestions about NOT leaving pellet hopper filled after a cook - in humid areas especially (that's me in Illinois I think). Not clearing things out leads to pellet/auger jams. True/False? Suggestions are to empty pellet hopper after each cook. So if that's true, then what are the steps? How would you empty the auger tube after a cook? Or maybe, its not true? Or?
I've got a question? Instead of one auger why not have 2. So you would grill with both augers running and if you shut one side off you can use that for smoking your meat. All the heat is towards the middle but like I said," I'm thinking 🤔 2 would be ok as long as you can shut one auger off for smoking. The chicken, pork, beef, shrimp and fish come out excellent. But am hoping we get that feature soon. My brother does the grilling I investigate the grill. Some times I wish I were an engineer.
The controller board which has the digital readout and temp knobs on my Pit Boss Tailgator 340 stopped working after only 7 uses. I called the company and was told the part was backordered for months and that they would send me one when they come in. A month later I called back to find out when the part might be in and was told in a month or so. I am very unhappy with Pit boss not stocking the parts and me not being able to use a fairly new pellet smoker. The person I spoke to was very helpful but that does not fix my broken pellet stove. It may be on the curb next garbage day. One important tip is to take the grill and lower plates off and clean all the grease and residue from the pellets-It caught on fire on my 5th use.
Re: the "not stocking" concern - thousands and thousands of little and big items that are imported to countries, and through ports like LA & Long Beach, CA, have been delayed for a long time due to back-ups at the ports having to do with the actual off-loading of the shipping containers. This is real problem that has been world-wide. I don't work for the company, but I'm sharing this to possibly explain why a part you need and want may be hung up. Nothing personal or shifty. Just a real-time, pain-in-the-ass, massive problem getting items from one side of the world to the other, off the ships, into the trucks, out of the trucks and onto stock shelves so the seller can support you with the item you need.
Newborn question, since is recommended to empty the pellets after every use, does that mean you have to prime it every time or do you leave enough pellets in so you don't have to. Thx in advance
TO PIT BOSS ENGINEERS - Just a couple of ideas for the PB1150PS2. 1) Provide a plug for the 'temperature gauge hole. (.75) - 2) Provide a gasket around the lid. I had to add a fire proof gasket around the inside of the lid to make the lid a little bit tighter (cheap install $10 bucks). 3- Provide a tighter fitting grate or provide notches so the grates can fit in, so they don't slide around. 4- An LED light would be a nice idea. 5 - Hooks on the back to hang the warming rack when not in use. I know the 1600 has that feature. If you can't have the feature in place, atleast have it as an add-on accessory.
What type of gasket did you use? Do you have a brand or specific type you'd recommend?
Perfect! Good to know for the newcomers. Wish this was posted a month ago when I got my 1100 pro series had so many questions. This video explained everything well.
Just picked up my 820 from Lowe's and will be using it tomorrow, there's still so light snowing here in Michigan (in April).
I work at lowes and that grill has been very popular
How much did you pay for it?
Excellent instructions, I bought mine already assembled and. Wal-Mart decided to keep instructions if their were any.. Thanks.
Any idea when after starting the smoker (previously used) how high the time should get before actually setting a temp? Say if I turned it on let it start heating up, how hot will it get? The lowest I can set my cooking temp on my pellet smoker is 200 degrees. Is there a “regulated temp”that the smoker will default to if a temp is not set or will the temp just continue to rise? Does that make sense?
I've got a PB700FB, which I love. Why do I get smoke coming out of the pellet box, where it never used to? Then another problem, after a use, I did a burn off and a cool down per instructions, as I always do. Went to use it next day, auger would start to move then stop. I let it go for about 5 minutes, but nothing happened. Let it go through a shut down and unplugged it then tried to start it again, but same thing happened. Got on RUclips and saw how to remove auger. Upon removal, there were burnt pellets about half way back the feeder tube. What causes that? Oh yeah, thanks for giving a better warranty the year after I got mine. You'd have thought you would have offered it to previous customers.
That happened to me the other day smoking out of hopper and auger jam. Came to the conclusion it was the pellets I used. They are called Knotty wood 100% pure Plum Wood. I’m not dissing this company it’s just I owned this pellet grill over 5 years no problems. Seen a U Tube video advertising knotty wood plum, bought the pellets did my cook did notice smoke out of hopper, about a week later ( the other day ) auger jammed full like really hard pellet material. I cleared the auger no issues now. I am hesitant to use those pellets again.
I tried to use mines so many time and it just wouldn't hold the heat. I definitely have to be doing something wrong but I follow every step.
Can you keep it plugged in all the time???? And can you fire it up to cook a quick burger or steak????
BBQ Bob thank you so much for this Video!!! You saved and help me calm my husband down!!! We are excited to get started!!!
What do you mean completely out of fuel? Like out of pellets?
Am i supposed to leave that internal metal vent in the open to see the flame or keep it closed to smoke?
There are several guys saying you need to spray cooking oil on the inside to season it. Is that true?
Is it worthwhile after the initial burn-off to coat any (or all?) interior surfaces with vegetable oil (or similar) and 'curing' the metal inside with another burn to prevent rusting?
never hurts to hit all internal surfaces with a little coating of vegetable oil.
Got a 820 pro for fahters day. This will take my smoking to a new level. Love it
Do they use a lot of pellets? I’ve never owned one.
@@whatfreedom7 they use a lot of pellets on high temperature only. Like when you grill steaks or burgers and stuff. But when you go low and slow it uses very little pellets. It's an awesome grill. Got mine at Lowe's on clearance just to learn to cook on a pellet grill. Gotta say that I haven't been using my weber kettle as much, that's how much I like this grill.

Excitedly put my pit boss together last night only to immediately notice the auger jammed. I spent about 30 minutes emptying the hopper and clear out the jam. Started it up again and the auger was working, however once I added in the pellets it almost immediately jammed again. After clearing it again and running it without pellets I noticed the auger can be pushed left and right so much so that it seems as though the entire motor turns. The auger moves about half rotation and then bogs down again. Noticing how many other people have this same problem.
Jason, if there is an issue with your auger motor, please let us know and we'll get a replacement part sent out for you.
I doing my first cook tonight. can't wait :-) thank you
Yo drip/heat plate open or closed? My last one Didn’t have that junk.
Just got my Pit boss. I'm excited.
I've always done charcoal smoking and i'm looking forward to my new pellet smoker.
Another video said to keep grill open until the smoke clears when you first start it up? It said the smoker can explode? I just got a pit boss, and I want to do correctly.
Hey Melissa, make sure to refer to the owner's manual to verify, but almost all Pit Boss Models should be started with the lid open on the "Smoke" setting until the white smoke rolls out of the barrel. You should hear a nice torchy roar before shutting the lid.
Is there anything that can or should be done to prolong the life of the firebox? I notice mine is getting rather rusty
When you grill on pellet grill does the meat get smoked flavor?
Do we have to keep the finger on the prime button the entire process?
Stupid question when you are ready to smoke, the little lid (inside, it moves left or right and if it’s open you can see the flames) or I don’t know how to call it, do I have to leave it open or closed when I’m smoking the ribs
Great video- thanks for you time. I have question for you; I bought the Platinum Laredo model last week- it was a display model and did not have an owner's manual, so I found your site and followed your instructions...a big help. My first cook was fine until about 3 hours in...I noticed lots of smoke coming out of the hopper, and the temp was dropping. Brand new machine---can you tell me what I should have done to correct or prevent this from happening? I'm hesitant to commit to a long smoke at this point.

Should you have the broiler open or closed ? When you are burning impurities off on first run?

Man thank you so much. Just bought a pit boss pellet smoker at Lowe’s and wasn’t sure how to get it going and this was perfect. I think I might’ve held the prime button too long though because it smoked waaaay to much then kicked on with a bang that sounded like an m80
Just purchased a Pit Boss PB1150 PS2 - How can I tell if I have the NEW updated PID controls. I've seen where numerous people have had to send their controls back in to Pit Boss for a new updated control box.
Just fired up my 1000t4
Followed your video.
The temps all show difference's of 100 degrees. The lid shows 470.
The lid shows 370-380. I also set a probe on the grate reads 366.
Any thoughts as to which is correct? Thanks. Merry Christmas
🤔 so no spraying with oil on the inside huh? I think I’d still do it just because it seems like a good idea but any who…
Also, do I REALLY have to have the door OPEN every time I startup my PS1150PS2 to smoke something? I have guest coming at 6:00 for dinner and it's raining. It's 4 o'clock and it's expected to rain for the next few hours. I didn't have to leave the door open when I Primed it.
Just started up the XL up for fathers day. Very easy process. Just confused me a little by calling the pellets themselves "fuel".
Do we keep the flame broiler lid close or open during the 30-40 minute burn-off? Or its not important?
MrMugenwii CLOSED that’s a good point it would just cook the front thermometer for no reason
I'm trying to do the initial burn off on my Pit Boss 440. My Pit Boss 440 DOES NOT have a prime button. What do I do?
so help me understand something. the sear plate should be open over the broiler plate during the initial start up until the you get a flame, correct?
Just got mine puttin it together this weekend
I've seen these grills with a grill plate that opens to directly sear meat. But if that is the case, won't grease drip into the burn pot? That seems like trouble.
Nope
Brand new KC Platinum. Under 5 seconds after I power on, I get ERR and a flashing auger. I've held in prime for multible minutes. Auger does not budge. Manual says to Prime it. Customer service has been no help
Hi Eric, we want to help. Please send us a message on our Facebook page or open a case through your account.
Do you take the inside grill grates out before you do the initial burn off? TY!
I have a brand new pit boss and the auger doesn't even move when I hit the prime button. I can't even get ahold of support.
I have heard to leave the lid open during start up to avoid flame out. This guy said lid closed. Confused
I have had problems with my pit boss since day 1. My temp swings are huge. I have it on 220 degree and my swings have gone to almost 450 degree. It is constantly going up to 300 then comes down to around 250. I went to where I bought it and they told me to call pit boss. I have contacted pit boss and they stayed on the phone with me for over an hour going over the whole process of starting it and bringing up to temp. They sent me a new controller to install. I installed it and it still does the same thing. I have wasted so much meat on this thing. It over cooks it so bad and dries it right out. Wasted brisket, which in NY is between $5 to $9 a pound. I have sent a couple messages back to Pit Boss and they just send me messages back asking me the same dozen questions every time and telling me to clean my temp probe. I have not had 1 good cook on this smoker. I am back to using my old electric smoker and this Pit Boss is just an expensive dust collector.
STOP using electricity to smoke your meats. Stick with charcoal or wood.
Does the initial start up involve the cooking grates or not? The manual says to remove all cooking racks.
I just bought the 1150 pro, and it has what I would call an unreasonably absurd amount of machine oil on the internals. Could I use light dish soap and warm water to clean most of it off before going through the burn off process?
Please give us a call if you haven't gotten an answer on this yet. 877-303-3134
Just got our 1st Pit Boss Austin XL. Is it common for the hood thermometer to 110° off from the digital reading?
Just got my 820xl. Cannot wait to use. Thank you for the easy to follow video.
Thanks for being part of the Pit Boss family!
What do you do if it doesn't ignite on start up? I followed all the instructions and the pellets didn't ignite
Be careful. I have smoked pork shoulder without issues. Always clean the firepot BEFORE the next smoke. I just had my second, hope to be last flare up.
Thanks Sam.

Thanks for the tips. My power went out like a min after i turned it off, so it completely turned off during the burn off phase. I've read about it causing issues with the next use, even blowing up. is this even a real issue? What should i do before the next start up? Thanks
I would clean out any pellets inside the barrel/burn pot and then try the burn off again.
What does he mean fuel? When there is no pellets how can it get fuel? I'm confused I want to buy one.
The pellets are the fuel
I am thinking about buying one for my start up business I have a stick burner right now but want to upgrade
Do you recommend spraying the inside with Pam for the initial burn off?
No! Read the instructions innthe damn book will ya
@N Rivers did my research? Shows who is stupid. I own a few pit boss grills. They tell you in the instructions exactly what to do. And yes the instructions will answer his question. It comes pre seasoned you goof! Stick that in your research pipe and go research some more.
Got the 440 not a fan of how the hopper is installled only using 4 small screws
You need to open the lid before you turn it on you forgot to mention that in the video.

Can you do a video on the p settings
Smoke setting Is a manual cooking setting “P7” being the longest time it takes to feed a cycle of pellets to feed down to your igniter and “P1” being the fastest setting to cycle your chips to the igniter .... pit master suggests if you use setting “smoke” you should start at “P4” and see how your temperature plays out I like P5-P6 during the summer and P2-P3 during the winter
Gregory Kennedy that makes sense. They should copy paste this comment on the manual
No.me.digas also wait 10-15 mins between switching your setting so you don’t over fill that bowl with pellets and completely sky rocket in temperature
Do you season the inside with cooking spray?
Hi Pit Boss. I am going to get the Pit Boss Pro820. My patio does not have a roof. Will the cover keep the Pro820 dry and safe in heavy rain? That is all I worry about. Thanks.
Michael, the cover will provide protection from the elements, but be aware, it does not make it waterproof. If it's going to be any longer than a week or so between uses, you'll want to drain the hopper and run the unit until the auger is clear to prevent any auger jams.
Do you add pellets for the 1st burn?
Should you be doing this process with the lid open and the heat setting is on smoke, until you crank uo your heat?
Yes, the grill always needs to be started with the lid open, on Smoke for about 10 or so minutes. After the pellets have fully ignited, you can then close the lid and set your cooking temp.
Bought the 820 Pro from Lowe’s but had to return it after just 3 weeks. The display faded and never came back. I tried to get to the fuse, but stripped a couple of screws in the process. So back it went and I’m now in the market for a new grill. Just not sure what to buy.
Why does my grill keep going higher 50 degrees than I set it.
CLEANING ISSUE: By mistake cleaned outside shell of my pit boss Memphis using a standard degreaser... Immediately the nice shinny finish was gone. Any ideas how to restore the original nice brilliant finish on the BLACK covers ??? I believe car wax could work fine... any ideas ???? Appreciated.
Hi Luis, you can try using a light coat of car wax or another type of polish.
For me, I had to hold the primer button for a couple minutes to see pellets enter the burner.
My husband just got me one of these for my birthday. I fucking looooooooooove it
So you have to prime it everytime when before smoking ????
No only the first time you start it up. It’s to burn off all the factory oils.
I'm not getting any sequence of numbers without the dial off it only does it when you turn the knob to smoke
When I hold the prime button to get the pellets in the firepot it seems like the igniter has already timed out. I have timed the prime and it is around 3 minutes for fuel to reach the firepot, but it won't ignite. I have to power off my 820 then power back on. Is this normal or is something wrong with my control unit?
Hey there, we'd like to look into this with you. Please send these details to us in a message on Facebook or Instagram. You can also open up a case on the website for further assistance.

So I just bought the 1100 pro as a floor model as they discontinued it. I noticed if I were making wings or something and I open the grill the temp drops on the unit and the fan kicks on and super heats the inside sometimes over -00 degrees more than I wanted as it’s trying to compensate for the temp drop.
