- The Cambridge Audio EVO 150 Delorean edition streaming amplifier features a Hypex Class D amp section. The amp module is rated at 150 watts/ch, 8 ohms and 250 watts/ch, 4 ohms. For anybody that cares I’ve just returned mine after 3 months. It’s a lovely unit with all the bells and whistles (apart from room correction) and sounds so clean with tight bass and great detail retrieval. Feels relatively powerful but not the 150wpc that it actually has. Not surprised it measured so well. I had a few software issues and some distortion but mine was a refurbished unit so maybe that’s why. Anyway it got me thinking about the longevity of these types of amps. In the end I sent it back and went old skool and analogue and got an Exposure 3510. Glad I did as it has a lot more grunt (to my ears) than the Evo and sounds more musical and natural if you believe in that kind of thing. Maybe that’s coloration but all I know is that I enjoy music more through the Exposure. Using my old CXNv2 streamer as a front end with a view to replacing the digital front end as technology changes and keep the analogue amp for 20 years!

So if they rate it at 150 @ 1.0% thd does that mean the model 40n rated at 70 watts @ .02% THD is much better rating?

Thanks for the video. High THD is a concern for me though I am not certain that is what I am hearing. Recently bought Technics SU-G700M2 (used) to try. Great imaging, dynamics rated at 75w .5thd. I feel compared to lower THD products it lacks what audiophile s call “blacks”. It sounds supper clear but I don’t hear what I perceive as black. Is this high THD or something else?
This amp has very low THD below its max power rating as I showed in my report.
@@Audioholics Yes I see that. Then maybe what I hear is not a THD issue or knowing at max levels the amps have THD that is high is psychologically influencing my listening. I have not a/bed. Looking forward to more videos on this. The point of max THD measurement is crucial.
I have no clue what “blacks” refer to other than low noise floor aka low THD. With a ~90dB noise floor of this unit you shouldn’t be hearing the noise from your seat unless you have some crazy 110dB horns or something. I think you’re confused and looking for some magical sound that doesn’t exist, it’s just noise floor/THD.
Blacks is possibly low noise floor/thd. I have not heard the Cambridge unit. I am referencing the Technics SU-G700m2 that sounds better than the Yamaha I previously used except nothing does not sound as much like nothing. Yamaha THD 0.019 vs Technics 0.5. I am curious if the THD is what makes both sound different as far as what I have described.
Do you think this Hypex 252 module would measure the same in another amp, say Buckeye? Or would the amplifier measurements vary by implementation? Thanks!
Nope, it should be very similar in terms of output power and behavior.

I am using an 8ch Hypex MP252 amp from Buckeye to power my outdoor audio system.
I have 14 speakers total, wiring them in pairs for (supposedly) a 4ohm load.
250W at 4ohm @0.1% should be nicey nice for an outdoor setups, yes? I have 5 pairs of the 8.0 mini bollards and 2 pairs of shallow-mount Wet Sounds for the Pergola. I went this route to have a CoastalSource experience without spending an arm and a leg on their Class D amps with DSP. I’m using an AVR for bass management, and multi-ch stereo. Your feedback is helpful. Thank you!
Gene, I've noticed your videos are back to 1080p, which from your camera is fuzzy. What happened to the 4k camera you had? It's hard to see the graphs since they are fuzzy, even on my large 48" LG C1 monitor.
I do these videos at my desk using a streamyard, which kills resolution. My formal videos are higher quality in 4k.

@@Audioholics Thanks for the link Gene ... looked at your website and noticed the same thing. The PQ of the AP graphs is on the poor side. I think that's the source of this problem. Is there a way to capture their plots in a higher resolution format? I've seen sharper, higher rez plots before, so I should think this is possible. Thanks.
@@davidmusoke FWIW, the images appear to suffer from high JPG compression. For charts and graphs, GIFs and PNGs can render much sharper / more exact edges on text and lines. (but photos of people, products & other real things, JPGs are usually better)
Been hearing mixed reviews on this amp. And it looks like it bench test well. Can’t find anything I don’t really like about the amp. Does everyone have an opinion on this amp vs the Yamaha a-s2200? I feel like that’s a good comparison price power and options. But sound wise how would they compare?

@Audioholics Yes !! I have the 51.8 pound AS-1100 and love it but sounds way more powerful than 90watts and my denon pma 1700 sounds much louder then 70 watts!

You're actually looking for a 7 channel amp & your budget will be the determining factor in which is best for you.

You’re not going to get that with the NP252s in there lol. If you want a cheaper price then you’ll need to look at cheaper devices with less capable and less performant Preamps and amps. You could combine a few devices from Topping to get a good Preamp and amp setup, then add a source.
@@andrewskaterrr During my over 40 yers in the audio hobby I quickly learned that there is a thing call "Law of diminishing returns". Where an $3000 amp does not sound 2 times better than a $1500 amp. You can tell by how they measure. Topping LA90 measures better at $799. As you increase $ you get less real improvement and more fluff of features with fancy names. So a $700 should easily get you great sound, state of the art sound, no need to go higher. So I am not missing out on the Cambridge, they are missing out on a large chunk of the market. Off course as a choice, but my $ wont go there. So imagine a WiiM Amp with meters at $699 perfect.
@@andrewskaterrr a good example is Outlaw Audio 2220, better than Topping at higher power, mono blocks 2 for $699, can't beat that a double the price.
