When I need inspiration I think “what would Chris Sherland do..?” well maybe not quite like that but... I have to say that in the short time that I’ve discovered this channel you’ve made a huge difference in how I play up & down the neck...the great thing about your videos is that the lessons stick (can’t say that about everyone else I watch...well not Marty anyway lol) and I’m really able to use the information in songs/progressions I already know...so once again many Thanks 🙏 ...please know that you’re making a difference... 🎸🔊🎶🤘
Marty sent me here. I subscribed after watching your circle of 5ths lessons. THANK YOU for making it a tool, instead of a mystery known only to guitar elites. Cheers!
Thank you ,,, finally someone who explains to novices, as novices not guitar wizard"s I found this very informative and, for once crystal clear as Fuji Water..... not clear as Mud. From Canada ,,, thx.
Your lessons are so helpful and insightful, I've learned a lot so far! I'm really glad I found your channel! This is probably the most "undervalued" guitar channel on here, I'm sure it'll grow very fast. Please keep it up!
Just found you. GREAT lessons! I have been looking for a teacher that explains theory and how to practice so I understand why the music works instead of just memorizing songs or licks. These lessons are focused enough so I don’t get overwhelmed. Really appreciate what you are doing.
@@curiousguitarist Hi Chris. Found your channel via Marty and glad I did. Just what I need in my guitar journey. There were several lightbulb moments for me yesterday as I watched your videos. Headed over to Patreon as a result.
I'm watching this video again much later on in my guitar journey and I finally get it! I really was stuck in a box but now I'm gonna practice this. I'm almost coming up on a year since I started playing tho and I've made a tone of progress.
Delightful insight. When I learned 3nps in a heptatonic scale, besides helping with speed and knowing the neck, it made me see how obvious the 2nps pentatonic scale was just repeating over and over. I always say that the obvious isn't always obvious until someone points out how obvious it is!
I've been watching lessons on youtube for several years now, non of them have brought up this super simple but SO important "thing". Wish you had started making videos years ago, then I would have saved hundreds of hours.... This is what I need to progress....Thank you!
Yet another video in the simple, but necessary, process of thinking outside scale "position" playing. Practicing your ideas not only solidify my knowledge of where notes are on the neck, but push me to think differently about playing lead. I can feel my creativity expanding as I break out of the prison of positions. Thank you once again!
Gadzooks! When I look back at the camera and editing I thought was "ok" it makes me want to cry!!! The concept is outstanding though isn't it!? Glad you're here Joseph!
@@curiousguitarist like many self taught guitarists, I've not been methodical in my education so far. Jumping from site to site, link to link, video to video. I've wasted a lot of precious time. Your way of conveying these ideas fits my learning style. Wish I had stopped here years ago. I'm probably going to purchase Lead Guitar from the Inside Out, but I have a question. Where should I be in terms of theoretical knowledge and actual playing to start the course? Thanks for your time, and again, please keep up the great work.

Thanks Chris, I'm still a new guitar player and just found your channel through Marty. I really appreciate the logical/actionable approach you take. I've subscribed and looking forward to more lessons.
Im currently going through Paul Davids next level playing course which is really good. And using videos like this to further my knowledge. This example has really opened up fresh ideas in my playing in terms of linking a lot of the new ideas i'm learning. Thanks Chris.
Good information, as always. Nice, simple ideas to get out of the box. Thanks C. That surf green and the pearloid pickguard is a killer. But I gotta ask. And no offense intended. That maple fretboard looks pretty grimy. It is some special kind of maple stain or does it just need a really, really good cleaning? Looks pretty funky.

It would be so extremely helpful if you could have graphics that show where your fingers are it’s so difficult to pause the video and your fingers are so fluid in how you play that I have to literally watch it frame by frame which for a new be like me I love learning from you, but it’s so frustrating the hard
Chris, first thanks so much for sharing your content. I hope that in next 6 months I'll be ready to absorb more of it as my fluency catches up. Question: As you move from say a minor Pentatonic box 2NPS shape to a 3NPS execution are you still working with a memorized "shape", just now in 3NPS format? OR are you always thinking about the interval and thinking I can grab a flat 3 here, a 4 there as you play through the scale, or is that just too much for the brain to handle in the moment?!?!
Will, I love this comment! The answer is "both" really. If I'm headed somewhere (a target, maybe the 12th or a high root note that I can see I want to get to) the scale shapes are like highways, I'm not concerned with the exits I'm passing by, or how the camber of the road is working for me, I'm moving. But, when I get to that target, I'm now seeing the relationship of the notes to each other and I'm fully conscious. When I'm playing slowly, and thoughtfully, and hopefully with a lot of feel, I'm fully focused on the "what", but when I'm traveling somehewre, it's all about the "how". Helpful? Does that make sense?
@@curiousguitarist Yes! thanks. That makes sense. Even to my beginner brain. If I'm messing around in minor pentatonic scale over a jam track sometimes I'm just kind of mindlessly finding notes in the pattern that I fell should about this much higher or that much lower than the note I just played, but when I'm thinking about resolving to a root, I'm trying to find a 4th to bend because it just sounds so good just before landing home on the root. I need to work on making the interval shapes automatic I think. I need to work on a LOT actually... 59 year old playing for a year now at least an hour a day, but man it's endless. I'm gonna come find you when I make the leap that I know is coming in the next 6-12 months. So fun. Thanks for hitting me back.

Very cool how we can apply different constraints to the same scale to move us down, across, or up the neck. Super useful!
