At least you had no property damage. The bonus here is that you won't need to buy any firewood for the stove in your nice new cabin for a very long while.
Yup, I have the same problem here on my lot in the eastern US. The English ivy chokes out lateral growth and catches wind like a sail to fell or snap off the dormant tops of deciduous trees in the winter. Cutting out a chunk of the vines and continuing to do so as they come up from the roots will help.
I have to agree with all of the comments about the ivy. Once a tree gets past its prime, ivy can get a hold of the sickly tree and start to strangle it, and once weakened enough the tree is easily blown over. The advice I spotted in a couple of places, to cut the ivy near its roots and let the upper section die off is good, as it will stop the throttling of the tree. Best of luck with the cleanup, take care.
I'm so sorry to see the amount of damage you have suffered, fortunately no damage to the property just trees, and I did think when I saw all the Ivy climbing up the trees that they were dead, and your friend the tree surgeon confirmed, I think you will find a lot of the others are much the same. But good luck on getting it all cleared up.
The storm was Mother Nature's way of clearing out the unhealthy trees to make room for the healthy ones. She doesn't work neatly, so you have to clean up after her.
Ivy growing around the tree is not a good thing. It can deplete the tree of water and nutrients, among other things. Check online on how to remove ivy without damaging the tree bark.
Very glad to hear both your family and the chooks are okay, and that there was no damage to any buildings! All that firewood though 😬Perhaps you could try making a holz hausen out of it!
It could have been so much worse. Your trees actually protected your property. The last high wind storm we had took out 200+ year old trees right down to the root balls. Since we don't get a lot of rain, our old trees are pretty much shallow rooted which is dangerous in 90+ mph winds! We get these winds once or twice a year. Congratulations on all your roofs being intact! Big sigh of relief!
Great time to really thin out that area while the brambles are dormant. Ivy is taking down trees all over Vancouver Island in these wind storms. Scary stuff. They call them 'widow makers' here.
Poor chickens. Thought they were in the lap of luxury only to find themselves camping out! We in Texas can tell you that a mobile home is not a safe place to be in a wind storm. Glad you're safe!!!
In a stragne way, the storm may have done you favour by blowing the trees down within your boundaries. Had a tree blown down over the road by the bridge, you would have had to pay the bill to clear it up. Thanks for sharing.
It's always so heartbreaking to loose trees knowing how many years it takes them to mature. I'm in the US, Florida, gulf coast area. My area was hit with back to back hurricanes but Milton really decided to slam us. I lost a huge mature oak tree, completely down, broke at the bottom. It landed across my back yard, fell into a clump of Mulberry trees and wiped out a few of those as well. Luckily, it missed my house, shed and most of my patio. The Mulberry trees shaded my patio from the hot Florida sun, so that's a huge loss for me. I still don't have it cleaned up yet. Tree guys in the area, priority are trees off houses 1st, then garages, sheds, car ports then the rest of us. Plan to have it removed in January. Big job, not looking forward to the time, cost and how bare my yard will look.
Rest assured that no one was hurt but the root stocks you showed both had signs of rot so in a way the storm did you a favour and plenty of fire wood for your new stove.
Gil more than ever now needs proper chainsaw safety equipment and not only a chainsaw safety course but tree felling and clearance training. Please! Many amatuers are seriously injured when clearing storm felled trees because they are unaware of the dangers. Cut the wrong branch in the wrong place and tension can be released elsewhere, causing branches to whip up unexpectedly!
If they came down they probably needed to be removed anyway. Cut them up and you have firewood or even lumber to build something. You’ve got ivy growing on a lot of trees and choking them. Take out all of the trees Martin has identified and then remove all of the ivy and clear the ground. That gives you plenty to do while you wait on permits, plans and materials. I would suggest electric pruners, a reciprocating saw and a small chainsaw for you so you can help.
Ventus, the god of wind did you a solid right there. Doesn't look like it right now, but there was no property damage and if the trees shattered on impact, they were old and frail. Now you can see the living iteration of 'survivor bias.' And it thinned the stand of volunteer trees in the secret garden.
Love the girls (chickens), so sweet huddled under the bush, glad they were safe through the storm. Of course Buddie is howling, he's quite unhappy with you for saying NO! Haha! The area near the bridge where the tree snapped appears to be a really nice spot for a sitting area. The bush/tree that Gil walked past and pushed the branch away resembles a palm tree, I know there are palms in the Scilly Isles of England, but Wales? I doubt it. Do you know the name of this bush/tree? Better the next tree comes down now with your friend's help than have it fall and hurt someone or the animals. Take care. If you don't post another video before Christmas, have a wonderful day and the best New Year ever!
It is not smart to leave dead standing trees standing, all the dead standing trees need to be cut before someone get killed by falling branches known as widow or widower makers!
True. But our narrator & her husband have so many priorities to handle, it's only inevitable something critical will be left unattended to. Hopefully this windstorm knocked down enough of the dead standing trees that there will be negligible risk of a widowmaker before they have a chance to start cleaning up the gardens.
We have been very dry here in Southern CA, but we still have wind storms, making brush fires quickly flare out of control. That's our normal most years, unfortunately. San Diego has a lot of huge old eucalyptus trees, with branches as thick as a man's waist. We call them 'widow makers' too, because the wood is oily and brittle, and those branches will crash down with little warning. I also saw rot around the base of those trees. It looks like there used to be a large single trunk that was cut down, and then 'suckers' grew up from the base until they became quite large too. The old root base was not enough to hold them when the wind got blowing. Sorry you will be losing a bit of privacy screen, but maybe your friend could recommend a good type of tree to plant, and help determine the best location. Slopes can be very tricky.
Thank goodness you guys were not there. That would have been so scary. Great motivator for garden clean up though. we always try to put it off not really thinking anything will happen.
At least mother nature was considerate in not damaging your property or harming your feathered and fur kids ( chickens and dogs) but she did leave a heck of a mess though.!
Make some firewood! How did the railway base stay drained of water? Maybe you want the pond to drain if you can figure out how they kept it drained originally?
From watching another channel that has a tree man, you have to clean the under brush out and cut damaged trees and some not damaged to allow for healthier trees and new saplings to grow. Yes, people hate cutting trees but it can be necessary to have better healthier trees.
To be honest this feels like a bit of a warning shot, we’re lucky nothing got damaged! We’ll have someone come and check out the woods and if need be arrange to take down anything that could cause a problem.
Glad you were all safe. It looks like there may be a few more rotten trees that need felling maybe? Looks like you could with getting old Norman Greenbum onto the job 😂😂😂❤
No, the ivy is not good. But IIRC it is native to this place, so there ought to be natural ways to control its growth. Here in Oregon it's an invasive species, without any environmental checks.
It will take a lot of work to clear out the dead trees and old foliage. Luckily the trees fell your side, if they feel onto public roadway, the homeowner is responsible for the damage.
No harm done which is main thing and loads of wood to lay down and let is season for next winter to burn and keep toasty warm. Next project build a wood store 😁
Thank God you and the chickens weren’t hurt. Could have been far worse. Everyone keeps talking about the ivy being an issue. I’ve never seen a photo or video of England, Wales and France that didn’t have ivy everywhere. Is there a cure? I live in the desert southwest in the US. Nothing grows well, but cactus. My thought has been if it’s green leave it, it might offer shade. But I can tell you don’t have that issue
Trees have a limited lifespan. Trees that could hit your buildings are always a risk. I have no more trees on my property that could hit anything. One tree came down in a storm, and it was just a little too short to hit a garden shed, by about a hand with. It could have fallen the other direction and hit a boat. That would have been expensive. If you do not know what to look for, you do not see what condition it is in. I am not risking it anymore.
By the looks on the video where the trees snapped off at the root it had White rot and the ivy would also I've helped to weaken it, god I hate ivy its an absolute pest
Does Wales Normally get windstorm like this? Looks like your next project is going to be trimming trees before one of those trees comes down on the station. I'm glad none of your animals were hurt or blown over the rainbow!
Storms are good takes down all the diseased & dead trees and no Cutting of coarse most properties could use a good clean cut . The Ivy & brambles will eventually kill all the trees and they will come down . It would be too much work to clean everything out properly now with everything your doing to the house .
You might want to get those branches overhanging the path above the bridge whenever you do pruning next. They don't look in that good a state from this footage.
You're fortunate to know an arborist who can advise you what to do. It's good you weren't home in the storm. It's also good that you havevstart on firewood for the fireplaces!
Trees are dangerous. I removed all near my house when I moved to my new location. Property damage, power outages and injury/loss of life to animals and humans are all possible because of trees in wind and storms. People in my area have been killed sitting in their family rooms when trees crashed through their houses during storms. Please remove as many trees as necessary for your and your animals’ safety!
Those trees were dead anyway, so the storm did you a favour by felling them for you. They would have had to have come down, anyway. The fact that that one snapped into pieces when it fell, shows it was dead already.
well i should learn to comment at the end of the video... by the way it's dangerous to go into the woods after a storm, especially if there is already damage....
At least you had no property damage. The bonus here is that you won't need to buy any firewood for the stove in your nice new cabin for a very long while.
Absolutely, I just need to get a log store big enough to season it all!
It's all the ivy climbing up the trees. They chock and rot the trees.
I agree with a couple other comments to clear any vines growing. They will choke out a mature tree. We have it and it is a chore. Good luck!
Glad the trees missed all your new structures. On the bright side, the broken bits will look great in your wood burner! 8^) Cheers!
I have to agree with all of the comments about the ivy. In other words, natural pruning!
Ivy growing around the tree is not a good thing. It can deplete the tree of water and nutrients, among other things. Check online on how to remove ivy without damaging the tree bark.
Thank you! 😊
Looks like they were standing dead trees with some rot in them. When they snap like that that's dead and dry. Ivy does that to the trees.😊
Glad you are safe and the chickens as well. ❤
Very glad to hear both your family and the chooks are okay, and that there was no damage to any buildings! All that firewood though 😬Perhaps you could try making a holz hausen out of it!

All the VERY BEST...❤❤❤ It will be very good husbandry for the land! It is a blessing in fact!❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
Great time to really thin out that area while the brambles are dormant. Ivy is taking down trees all over Vancouver Island in these wind storms. Scary stuff. They call them 'widow makers' here.
It looks like that there are more old trees that could fall down. The one with the yvi
Shame the chickens must have had a terrible fright when this tree came down !! And it narrowly missed the chicken house !!
Absolutely
The good news...it didn't hit any structure. The bad news... a lot of cleanup to do. A whole lot.
Poor chickens. Thought they were in the lap of luxury only to find themselves camping out! We in Texas can tell you that a mobile home is not a safe place to be in a wind storm. Glad you're safe!!!
Nothing's more powerful than Mother Nature....Earth, Wind, Fire and Water.
Absolutely!!
In a stragne way, the storm may have done you favour by blowing the trees down within your boundaries. Had a tree blown down over the road by the bridge, you would have had to pay the bill to clear it up. Thanks for sharing.
Oh yeah, thankfully none of them are near the road, I’d hate to be on the hook for that!!
Thankfully the trees missed the cabin and chicken house.
Very lucky

We are also not looking forward to the cost 😬

Nature told you which trees needed cutting down 😮
Gil more than ever now needs proper chainsaw safety equipment and not only a chainsaw safety course but tree felling and clearance training. Please!

Yes! There seem to be a few rotten ones still left. Good job you had the tree surgeon round! ❤❤

At least you were all safe and it didn't hit your chicken house or new log cabin either. More free firewood. 👍😄
You got that right!
Ventus, the god of wind did you a solid right there. Doesn't look like it right now, but there was no property damage and if the trees shattered on impact, they were old and frail. Now you can see the living iteration of 'survivor bias.' And it thinned the stand of volunteer trees in the secret garden.
Absolutely, it’s seems a lot of damage but once cleared up it’ll leave a nice space.
Love the girls (chickens), so sweet huddled under the bush, glad they were safe through the storm. Of course Buddie is howling, he's quite unhappy with you for saying NO! Haha! Hope you can get it cleaned up quickly before more bad weather
Suggest you get rid of the Ivy. They tend to smother and choke the trees

time check all trees too take out
At least some good logs for the log burner pile
Looks nice and bright now more open
Yes it does

Glad your all safe and the chickens later on are you going to do anything where that fence in cos people can get in to your garden
Thank goodness you guys were not there. That would have been so scary. Great motivator for garden clean up though. we always try to put it off not really thinking anything will happen.
Wow, that would have been frightening if you all were there.
What a mess, though.😮
At least mother nature was considerate in not damaging your property or harming your feathered and fur kids ( chickens and dogs) but she did leave a heck of a mess though.!
Make some firewood! How did the railway base stay drained of water? Maybe you want the pond to drain if you can figure out how they kept it drained originally?
Great question. Other sections of the track bed are now full of trees or filled in, this is probably contributing to the water build up in our section
From watching another channel that has a tree man, you have to clean the under brush out and cut damaged trees and some not damaged to allow for healthier trees and new saplings to grow. Yes, people hate cutting trees but it can be necessary to have better healthier trees.

No, not this strong, this was unusual. 🌬️
See if some local artists woodworkers want the coppiced wood or any root wood for woodworking to bowls etc.
Nice idea

I know, but I am grateful as I would have been petrified they were falling on the caravan

now build a log splitter!
We have one somewhere, have to find it now 😁
you need to get an arborist in to take a look at the trees left standing and all that ivy doesn't help the trees
That’s one way for clearing up your property?
That was some powerful storm.
Well you now have plenty of kindling.
The tree was clearly rotten. You should get an arboriculturist to check the rest out.
yup lots of clean up do your children help with this.
get some goats in to nibble the ivy

They were in full leaf in the summer, the big ones anyway, only the smaller one was rotten
Does the ivy kill the trees and make them weak? Or is it an age thing?
I believe it does weaken them, there’s so much of it that has gone unchecked it will take an age to get on top of it!
@@theoldstationrenovation Oh goodness, I'm so glad you are saving the land 💗
It looks like most of those trees are dying or dead and will fall over at sometime
i hope the little dinosaurs are as well as you are???
well i should learn to comment at the end of the video... by the way it's dangerous to go into the woods after a storm, especially if there is already damage....
Thankfully the choocks are fine but I bet it gave them a start!
In the words of another Tyuber " The land provides"... Winter is here and it's getting cold and uou guys can use the firewood...
lot rot
