- Whether hiking, backpacking or traveling, water filtration and purification is important. But not all portable water filters do both. But these three do! We'll compare these portable water filters that also purify and explain why it's important to do both (and simultaneously avoid dysentery and giardia...)
For those asking about fluoride: The Grayl's orange filter will filter out approximately 20% of your water's fluoride content.

Great video Thankyou. Your video was very helpful
I'm skeptical about any filter that doesn't require some "push" through membrane pressure. As in to say if it flows too easily through the system I feel as though the membrane are not small enough for purification. I have a Grayl 24oz and I will never trust any other filter purifier again. My wife and I have a sensitive digestive track and we've bought almost EVERY brand out there and Every time we had to use them if not both one of us had some sort of stomach or intestinal problem. Some were really bad and some were just slight irregularities. I can tell you the GRAYL has never after many many uses in the "field" (even in situations that we swore we die before we would drink the water) failed us and had any type of issue with our health.
..
I already own a sawyer squeeze which does me well for my hikes. Having watched this I’m now looking at the epic as it can be done on the go!
Great video. Really well executed!
I am using the epic for daily use, and tablets for my bladders along with an inline sawyer which is modified to allow filling the water bladder while it’s in use.
Thank you very much for looking at these options
I ended using the Epic Outdoors for two weeks trekking in Morocco. It was perfect. Thanks for the recommendation!
Excellent reviews. Thank you.
This video is sooo thorough! Currently using Epic, curious about the Grayl
So very informative and very entertaining! A delight to watch. Well done ma’am. Cheers!
Thanks for the reviews. Just got a few of the Epic Nalgene ones
I have Epic and just got a Grayl. Love Epic!!
I must say this was a very unbiased video. With a bubbly personality telling the pros and cons. Much better comparison than most ive seen
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing, nice review. Recently, I bought the Grayl Geopress and I'm really happy with it! Easy handling and clean water ... just perfect! :)
Thanks this is a great video. I love the Grayl because I can purify water for other uses but it’s SO heavy. It’s been a PITA to carry on travel. I’m trying the Epic on my next trip. I always have a small UV pen as backup so if I really need water I don’t want to boil that works too.
A really thorough and informative review delivered with panache. I subscribed.
I just bought the Rapid pure . Didnt know anything about it? Thanks for the reveiw . Good explanation of them all😊
Glad I could help!
Had to subscribe as I'm enamored with your looks, and speaking intelligence! As I mostly spend my time outdoors hunting, camping, and/or hiking, I use a water bladder and am now thinking of getting a Grayl filtration system to top off bladder, let alone for cooking use! Very informative video and please keep up the good work with future updates! 😊💯💥👊
I bought the Grayl GeoPress and stocked up on 4 additional purificaction filters while I was at it. I totally agree with you pre-filtering water with your kerchief (or anything that'll do the trick) before filling up the Grayl to make the filter last for as long as possible. I wish there was a way to backflush the Grayl to ensure that we get the full 350 presses/65 gallons and I hope there is a way to recycle the purification filters through Grayl once they're no longer effective/clogged.
Good vid, thanks! Liked and subscribed.
Awesome! Thanks
Great video!!!! Thanks for sharing. I’ve been using the Grayl for 3 years now (several filters) and have bought one for my parents and husband. We use it primarily for international travel, but to some very remote locations in Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea, Peru, and other places without adequate water systems. I have not had an issue!! And I’ve likely saved over 100plastic bottles from being added to the environment because I can “make” my own potable water. I’m always keeping my eyes open in case a better product is developed, but I love my grayl. The only downsize to me is the size! It takes up 1/4 of my carry on bag and is too large to fit in the mesh side bottle holder. Also, remembering to crack open the water bottle when on an airplane has proven challenging to me. Lastly, did you create a table with what each bottle is capable of filtering and purifying against? It would be a great side by side comparison tool for those of us who like data! :). Thanks again for the informative and fun video!
I love Epic water filters and their bottles. All American made and amazing customer service.
Great content, excellent production, big personality, cool hair. You got a new subscription. I was shocked to see you didn’t have more subscribers with such a great production, they will come quickly as long as y’all keep it up. Look forward to learning more about you all and coming along for the ride. Toe pics on the way 😂🦶- Keep up the great work!
Awesome! Thank you!
I wonder if it is possible to add a hydration tube adapter to these bottles. That way you get the convenience of a hydration bladder with water easily available from the bottle housed at the side of your backpack without having to constantly reach behind to grab it but also can easily refill/filter/purify water and add electrolytes (i.e. I think the Grayl is the only one that has that option as far as I know) without the challenges of refilling a hydration bladder.
If I'm not mistaken, the Grayl is also the most expensive of the three. I am looking hard at the Epic. Right now I have a Sawyer Mini and it does ok for what I need now. But the purifier part is what I want to move up to.
Sawyer Mini always works well in a pinch
Thanks for a great practical review. Could you go over the practical maintenance, cleaning, storage, prefiltering and airplane transport of these (I just bought the ultralight)? I heard that it's good to burp the grayl a few times and leave the cap loose while changing altitude or it might leak? How do you care for the ultralight to maximize cartilage life and keep the bottle sanitary between uses for the 3 years of active use? I'll probably carry the steripen/prefilter for remote international trips as a backup.
Thanks! We'll definitely keep your questions in mind for our next big filter video!
Id like you to also compare Larq bottles which use UV light to purify water inside the bottle.
Epic water filters (and Nalgene bottles) are also made in the USA.
i am looking for machine system is there availability in the market ??? it can filter and also through water we can easily drink through water 💦???
Have you tried the Survivor Filter Pro? It is a pump purifier.
We’ll have to check it out!
👍 .. useful .. thanks.
I've been mulling over getting a portable water filter for years (have a ceramic gravity fed setup at home for just-in-case) .. having relied on, when necessary, tablets and bleach.
Now I have more options to mull over 🤔 .. one day .. 😊. Seriously, probably sooner than later. In home South Africa (surprisingly) and here in Switzerland, the quality of the piped drinking water is good .. the rest of Europe .. not too sure .. and with the easing of Restrictions, I can soon get to finally see my first grandchild in the Netherlands.
I don't drink bottled water (unless there will be absolutely no other alternative at the time .. hasn't happened yet) .. don't, on principle and for cost reasons .. period!
Toes .. Apple Cider Vinegar. There .. gone for good.
Take care ..
Awesome!
Can I use these to filter tap water?
Which is best for dealing with BPAs and micro plastics?
They will all filter both!
The First Need system (filter and purifier) has been around for at least 40 years. That's how long I've been carrying one.
Using purification tablets, you end up with nasty coffee. Quite a few filters take care of this problem.
Thanks!
link for Epic Water Filters does not work? RapidPure links are not working except for the bag?

I prefer the Survivor Filter Pro pump. It's lightweight, filters and purifies, and can be used to clean water for multiple people. I'm not sure what the flow rate is compared to the Grayl, but considering you don't need to remove the filter, empty the cup, then refill it again, I would bet it is faster if you are filtering a lot of water at one time.
We’ll have to check that one out!
Grayl would be my first and last go to total drinking water filter and purification bottle.
that's the thing I've over wondered, they tell us to drink more water, they have all these cool water bottles that alert us to drink water by the hour... but what if .... you're out somewhere and the water is you dont know how its treated.... why can't a filtering system be a standard in all water bottles?
Even with those bottles that filter and purify, say if I add water purification droplets into the mix. How long should I wait until the water is safe to drink? Even with those purification and filtration bottles?
Tablets or drops would be overkill for those bottles but if you did it would be totally dependent on what product you're using. Some take 30 minutes while others take 4 hours.
I'm getting a Grayl for my house.
Our water tastes terrible since its well water from an iron and sulphur rich area. (blech)
that’s rough, that sulphur water smells like butt!
The Grayl is great because you can filter and pour water into another container. It's tough and rugged. But a big problem with it is it is not to be used to filter water containing tannins. I live in Florida. Probably most of our waters have high levels of tannins--the Blackwater River, the Suwannee River, the Peace River, Fisheating Creek, to name a few, plus many lakes and ponds. Other waters aren't so tannin laden, but since you're not supposed to filter waters containing tannins, I'm not sure what I can filter. Filtering tannins will cause them to bind with receptors on the filter and then maybe you won't be able to rely on the filter to get out pathogens, meaning you could get sick. If you're filtering from a clearwater stream or mountain lake, no problem. Otherwise, who the heck knows exactly what you can filter with this thing? I know I don't.
The filters rated in all 7 continents at 65 gallons I'm assuming when they tested the filters they did all the tests against heavily polluted water and tannins aren't as detrimental to your health as what the filter is built for so maybe contact grayl and ask if despite the tannins will the filter still hold up to 65 gallons of clean water?
Apparently tannins pose no health risks at all and just make the water taste and smell but maybe a pre-filter with a cloth can reduce that and extend the life of your filter if the pollution is that bad but I would assume if they're selling a $100 water bottle that could cause serious health issues if it doesn't function in the way they market it for, they would probably test the filter in every way possible to avoid a serious lawsuit

I really don't get why most of the reviews leave the Lifesaver products out! They are pioneers, and also filter out viruses, and the Lifesaver lasts for 660 gallons
Not quite right. Some of the filters are now using finer media that WILL block viruses. You still need activated charcoal to reduce chemicals though.
Berkey do a "Sports bottle" filter & purifier. Would be good to add to the comparison list.
Would love to see that!
Never used one.... so i really dont know how it works... i think i would go with the first ones... scoop, push and done and like you say you can easily fill up your bladder and stock a lot more water in your backpack....
The ultimate combo is Grayl filtered water....poured into a hydroflask with Epic Filter Urban. Ultimate clean.
😂
Zero water filter I heard is great ‼️
After the climate change in all of the things that have been going on in the world lately it is important to make sure that your family has a way to drink Clean safe water and even if you live alone in the apartment having one of those bottles will be good just to have to help keep you alive remember what happened in Texas last winter people who had water filters what doing a lot better than the ones that don't
The grayl still reigns supreme. 🙌
I’ll save weight on something else that I can live without. 😂 I went with the Grayl.
99,9 % isnt quite correct. lets say there are one hundred million microorganisms in the water, filtering out 99,9 % of them means there is still a hundred thousand of them left in your drink. the actual number is about 99,9999 so there is only one hundred left. that is category LOG 6 what is considered sterile.
You are correct! I just didn’t say all the 9’s like I should have! 😂 But the data is all in the links and we’ll make sure it’s correct in the description.
I have the same hairstyle as you on the right hand side of my head.....
Drink from the grayl 🍵
Grayl is the G.O.A.T.
What about Berkey travel?
According to their website it should take out everything. The travel system falls outside of our list because it’s multiple pieces and weighs in at 4lbs.
4:12 "Purificated"
😂 we like to have fun with words sometimes
Anyone watching this today. Buyer beware on the epic filters. Many customer complaints of mold growing inside of the filters.
8:16 drinking or COCAINE? WUT?
I'd stay away from Epic at all costs, i.e., if you want your filters in this lifetime. Worst service ever.
Says the person on the payroll of the competitor
your videos would get way more views if you didn't rant about the same things over and over again. I'm not saying your videos are bad, but consider dividing the video up so that people can skip to what they want to know. I think its great that everyone has their own style when it comes to RUclips videos, but I see a lot of creators struggling to keep up with the new non-existent attention span of this generation.
some more suggestions would be to add a visual bar at the top of the video to show how much time is left before the next segment. The links in the description are a great first step!
super..... annoying. Good review though. Tks :)
Thanks? 🤣
