  • This time Paquito will share with us his knowledge about the saxophones, performance tips, instruments and mouthpiece references and the history behind his instruments collection.
If someone said that my soul is twisted, it would not be very far from the truth, because after so many years, it has taken the form of something that is an inseparable part of it, the wonderful Saxophone.

@@ElyRodrigues I've read on a forum that would be a personalized mouthpiece maded specially for him, based on the old Selmer Metal Jazz he used previously. But honestly, I'm not safe about it. Don't sounds like a metal mouthpiece or something inspired on this.

how did your father in Cuba afford to buy you a selmer mark 6?? what did he do for a living?? that is a lot of money in those days especially in communist Cuba. My father bought me a Mark 6 in 1973 for $625.00.

My father was the Selmer representative before they nationalized everything in 1961. It is said that the last Selmer instruments shipment came from France on that famous La Coubre ship, and was disembarked just before the boat exploded due to a considerable load of weapons and explosives hidden inside the storage. I was too young to remember details, but probably my Alto came on that ship.

@@paquitodrivera There's a video of Phil Woods here on RUclips, giving a masterclass. He related how he got his gold plated Mark VI Alto at the Selmer Factory in Paris in the late 50s (while touring with Quincy Jones' Big Band); and how none other than Marcel Mule helped him choose the best one available. They included reeds and accessories, all for 150 dollars! A gold-plated one! (Woods paid $75, as they took his old horn, which they valued at the remaining $75). Different times: No strong Euro; European post-war economy was slow in recovering; plus he got the horn at the source -no intermediaries. (See minutes 33 to 35 of the video, titled "Master Class with Phil Woods: Performance"). Saludos desde Puerto Rico.
