Well nowadays Enduro bikes are even SLACKER & LONGER then DH bikes. You showed the new Gambler. My last Demo Enduro bike was like I said just more slack and long. The bike is from 2018. I dunno if there even is any DH bike who is slacker then the Nicolai G1 except their own ;) less then 61 is hard. My Privateer 161 is slack like the Gambler because of that long offset and 180mm fork , it is longer too. We dont even start about reach because DH bikes look tiny now compared to the big Enduro bikes.
If I am not riding at a bikepark, I am walking/riding around with my DH bike looking for drops or steep hills to ride. I have sometimes ridden several kilometers from one spot to another on my single speed DH bike, and surely, it would have been easier with a enduro bike, but it's not what it is about for me. It's about the feel of being outside with my bike and looking for nice freeride spots, I don't really care at all about it being easier or more practical or sit and think if I should get another bike. I had a season pass to a bike park and would do week long trips where I would be there when it opened until it closed, every day. I would just do blacks and double blacks and that is a perfect situation to own a dh bike. I have 2 bikes, a Kona operator (dh) and a Niner jet 9 (trail). I'm 54, after a 15 year sabbatical just bought a Intense M3/Fox 40mm x 200mm forks as a upgrade from my old Intense Uzzi DH/180mm dual clamp forks. No its not a new model (neither am I)as I am not really interested in the new bikes as I have too many great memories from these earlier period bikes. It's a bit like still wanting to drive your old car or still wear that old holey tee shirt you cannot get rid of. The M3 is not great for cross country or climbs but I feel you will get fit pretty quick if you pursue riding it as much as possible for all trails. The M3 also makes the rocky rides ( there are many of these in Sydney Australia and the surrounding areas..) far easier to handle and enjoy than being popped around on a low travel bike. I can also just huck drops and roll-in with ease which I would have trouble on the Uzzi but its pretty hard to pop low speed small jumps. This may have more to do with my age and fitness than the bike. So I am all for the DH ride being used for freeriding or what ever comes up. You can pick a pretty fine 2007 model DH for $1500 which is really more than enough for most peoples skill levels so why not just buy one.
I've been riding for many years in bike parks (chatel/morzine mainly) for 6 years, all kinds of trails from jump lines like Vink line, world cup tracks as Les Gets or Champery and never had a downhill bike. I tried one a few times but never got really into it, I prefer a more nimble bike, that can throw around easily, whip, scrub easily. My point is that there's a huge part of taste in the choice of big enduro vs DH bike.
Because of you, I run my suspension way more damped and slow than I used to... And watching the slo-mo in this vid is another reassurance that you were right...lol 😂 Great vid dude!
I have always owned a dh bike in my life, and for the majority of the time it was my only bike. Now im lucky to have an e-enduro and a new dh bike, but the truth is I ride bikeparks most of the time, trail riding is just about 20% of my overall riding time. And yes, the dh bikes are amazing. I love them.
Glad I saw this video. Coincidentally I just moved into a town that happens to have a bike park in my back yard during the summer. Also just acquired 3 different bikes from friends and family who don't use them. Ones an old sworks. The other is a newer diamond back enduro and also a 2018 trek session. Before this I haven't owned a bike in years after every bike I had was stolen, now I have XC DH and a enduro lol
with no bikeparks in the next 300km, i ride in the local forest which is ,however, rather well built. nice jumps and good trails. Sandy dirt is all we have here ,and a lot of flat landings. im Looking to buy my first Full sus.bike but am not sure whether to get and enduro or Dh bike. I personally prefer dh bikes but because we dont have much pure downhill here, not sure if its worth it. I also have a budget of 2500$ so im going to buy used. What type of bike should i go for? Also an reccomendations what could be a bike in my budget? Thank you very much! Also love the vids :)
So... from my perspective. I ride motorbikes often so throwing around a heavy bike (especially bicycle) is no issue at all... I have a habit of blowing through seals on the cheaper bikes within a few hours or days and am sick of replacing them often. I want to get a dh bike as their suspension is obviously superior but I won't be doing much dh riding but defiantly ramps and drop offs. Is it worth investing in a dh bike and what's your thoughts on this situation?
awesome video paul, so much work in it, very very helpful!. I recently started riding my dads merida downhill and i didnt like it because it was so slow, now I get it, thanks for the video
My old friend of mine just lent me his old 27.5 DH bike last weekend n it was my first time riding it. It feels like riding a bison, heavy on the front. However, it feel more stable on the roughs even with the blinding speed. Now it starts to grow in me apparently. PS : I'm a hardcore hardtail fan.
This is a great video! Very helpful, and I think im good with my enduro bike, the moment I feel my bike is coming up short I will consider a downhill bike which I think its never gonna happen, modern enduro bikes are so capable specially with the new 38 enduro forks !!
Ive been riding a hardtail since early 2000's So when i started earning money my first bike was a Downhill bike a GT ruckus 2011 2.0 that bike is super heavy but one of the pros is it can handle all the abuse that 180mm Fork just endured all the abuse of my 230 pound ass so when i got to change bike in years its so hard to find a trail bike that i can feel comfy with my riding style and weight until a year ago i Tried a 2018 Slayer, yes a Slayer! Its geo is definitely a downhill bike and when i ride it i feel like this is home not worrying it will break or something so its my bike until now. Though i will still call it Enduro/Single Crown Downhill machine.
Hi Paul, Great video and great series, really al enjoyed it. I guess you are shooting the video in Squamish, what is that gondola / chair lift behind you? Is that the sea to sky gondola?
I own a dh bike and I don't regret it. I tried an enduro bike on my local trails and I am bottoming out consistently with 10% sag on a dh bike I have like 10mm left of travel for emergency situations. Also drops feel more amazing. My Myst 2015 is making my trail experience a lot better
Thank you for the series. I just found this channel and it looks so informative and entertaining. I hope next videos about difference bikes would explain my questions
I daily mine everywhere and to work even. I just love riding it and like the option to jump something at a moments notice. Also I run a dropper, ohhhh the heresy!
Great video! I have a DH bike but I live across the street from a bike park with lift access. I love the bike because I can ride things that I normally wouldn't be able to on any other type of bike, so my riding as improved as a result. My trail bike however is in stark contrast to that, I use a gravel bike with front suspension, which is also a lot of fun for different reasons. I bought this type of bike because I wanted to ride to the trails instead of driving. I have yet to acquire a bike for XC technical terrain, mostly because I have no idea what type of bike would work the best for me. I am not particularly physically strong or technically skilled. I need a bike that preforms similarly to a DH bike on technical terrain but also is light an easy to pedal uphill. My weakness seems to be rough rock gardens, which I can't really do on a gravel bike.
I’m getting a DH bike first, even though I’ll be driving a minimum of two hours to shred it. After that I’ll be saving for an enduro. Both styles are killer and worth the money.
I would love to have an enduro bike but I simply don’t have the money. Currently in my area there is a carbon dh bike for sale from 2017 for a reasonable price and I’m not sure I should buy. My local is 8km away (I would cycle on the road) it’s about a 3 minute steep climb but a longer steep decent with big jumps, the bike park I go to is about 40min drive away
does this video also include the 2010 era downhill bikes with 26 inch wheels or will the old one perform better on slower trails than the current downhill bikes
Most people won't even test the capability of a modern enduro bike and they can go up the hill as well. A modern trail bike is very capable for most people. 200mm front and rear are crazy.
I kinda got excited and bought a 2009 Norco six three and I love it because I BMX alot and I am able to do like 17 stairs on it (I can only do 13 on my BMX) the downhill I have feels great it is like a boat in the air you just kinda pull up and it feels like ur flying it is so stable it is amazing and I run 26 all around because t is a old bike that's all they are
The comparison of a DH bike to an F1 car is an interesting one, i recall years ago that someone said the DH bike is the Monster Truck of cycling. I like that analogy. The thing is so burly that it just takes care of my screwups, every time.
DH bike is like a cabrio. Everyone will tell you its not practical but you just love it and use it even if it makes no sense. Do you know that in Europe, UK is a country with the biggest cabrio sales? And its like raining 3/4 of the year.
i am no where near pro, hell, im 13. but as someone who races and rides a lot i always grab the DH bike, like, im averaging 4-2nd in races and im the only one who rides one in the league. i have a enduro but it just feels so fast scrubbing off drops on it like im a pro. also its so much fun to just ride to school because there are freeride spots all over. plus i live 45mins away from a bikepark so thats the best place for a DH bike. in my opinion if your a hardcore DH racer and/or a parkrat DH bikes are awsome to have. but im nowhere near pro level and it makes a HUGE difference in races, thanks.
The funny thing is my country there are hardly any trails that benefit from a DH bike yet most younger guys end up with one. However once they are not teenagers anymore they realise enduros or even modern trail bikes are more than enough around here. In fact a modern long travel enduro is often more capable than 8-10 year old DH bike even on rough descents.
I’d rather be on my DH bike, but I also live near Mountain Creek so it’s a win win situation. Buying a rental that is 2 years old is a great way to save on one.
Why are your triple clamps so far down the fork shaft? At the top it looks like there 1" plus offset. Was this done on purpose to remove some of the slack angle? Or is this to compensate for the extra slack angle the mullet wheel adds to the geo?
I own a XC Hardtail and i tried Bikepark riding on enduros and i enjoyed it very much but i don't want to pay like 100€ every time I go riding so I am looking for a used DH bike rn bc if i take care of it i'll safe money if i go riding more than like 15 times over the period i own the bike. That's why i'll buy one even thought that i can't use it for anything but trails

with no bikeparks in the next 300km, i ride in the local forest which is ,however, rather well built. nice jumps and good trails.
Saw the latest punter-cast and had to Sub! Keep the awesome content coming...
barely realised that your chest plate was fox looks sick looks like scott sells it likes that nice job man
awesome video paul, so much work in it, very very helpful!.
Who should buy a dh bike? More like who can afford a dh bike!😂
Your so right
Just buy a propain rage or yt Tues
Downhill bikes generally end up cheaper than enduro bikes
Dh bikes are cheap as chips
@@lukemtb6800 definitely and they just make the trails so much more fun
This is a great video! Very helpful, and I think im good with my enduro bike, the moment I feel my bike is coming up short I will consider a downhill bike which I think its never gonna happen, modern enduro bikes are so capable specially with the new 38 enduro forks !!
I don’t need a DH bike but I want one!!
I dont need one but i bought an gambler 720 for 1000 bugs i think ist worth it
@@tobiasschmidt5027 is pedaling hard?
Everyone needs a dh bike at some point in their life.
Though i will still call it Enduro/Single Crown Downhill machine.
yes it has a 165 travel at the rear thats definitely a downhill rear travel match with a 170mm Fox 36 in front. Thats also a downhill travel length.
We are some different species who love to ride downhill bikes
Hi Paul,
Great video and great series, really al enjoyed it.
Such a well produced and interesting video! Thank you!
I daily mine everywhere and to work even. I just love riding it and like the option to jump something at a moments notice. Also I run a dropper, ohhhh the heresy!
Miranda Miller is my favorite rider ...
haha .. she is hilarious with such a great sense of humor ..
and she has the heart of a lion
Early this time, video looks sick
I wish I had a downhill park near me,
All you need is a 180mm front and rear enduro bike and your good to go!!
I’m getting a DH bike first, even though I’ll be driving a minimum of two hours to shred it. After that I’ll be saving for an enduro. Both styles are killer and worth the money.
I'm really interested in this kind of sports the only problem that I'm facing rn is there's no bike park near our region😪
Great series. Couldn't agree more with your take!
does this video also include the 2010 era downhill bikes with 26 inch wheels or will the old one perform better on slower trails than the current downhill bikes
love the punter content!
If you shuttle regularly, would a dh bike be a good investment? I shuttle south mountain.
If that’s south mountain in Phoenix then no, it’s not a good idea. I’ve ridden geronimo and a dh bike would let really work on that one.
there is no bikes in bike shops where I live, guess I'll buy a used DH bike, and suffer climbing haha
Having only ridden hardtails. Any Full suss would be comfortable to ride. Riding in Queenstown. Where i feel outta depth but its fun either eay
Just got my DH back from the shop, can't wait to cut more laps. I love it so much haha.
Dope bro 🔥🔥 saludos desde Guadalajara, México
we need a dirt jump version of this vid
personally i enjoy pushing my limits the most when riding and downhill bikes are the easiest to do that so for me there the most fun bikes
Are down hill mtbs still good for growing up hill bc I ride trails and I want a down hill bike bc they look great
DH bike is like a cabrio. Everyone will tell you its not practical but you just love it and use it even if it makes no sense. Do you know that in Europe, UK is a country with the biggest cabrio sales? And its like raining 3/4 of the year.
Everyone at least once in life
I'm thinking of getting one but a downhill park lives 1 hour away from me but I don't care about the ups do I would be fine walking
i am no where near pro, hell, im 13. but as someone who races and rides a lot i always grab the DH bike, like, im averaging 4-2nd in races and im the only one who rides one in the league. i have a enduro but it just feels so fast scrubbing off drops on it like im a pro. also its so much fun to just ride to school because there are freeride spots all over. plus i live 45mins away from a bikepark so thats the best place for a DH bike. in my opinion if your a hardcore DH racer and/or a parkrat DH bikes are awsome to have. but im nowhere near pro level and it makes a HUGE difference in races, thanks.
forgot to say, the bike is a 2019 commencal furious.
Downhill is what started mountainbiking. The Repack races are where mountain biking came from.
How do they pick the size ? Do they aim to have bars further away than usually ?
I’d rather be on my DH bike, but I also live near Mountain Creek so it’s a win win situation.
Buying a rental that is 2 years old is a great way to save on one.
theres one major factor here that doesnt get enough credit.
I'd want one because they look sick af. lol
Wish could afford one, still on a hardtail , but hardtail 🔥
5:44 ??? What are you talking about? 🤣
Who here’s watching this even though you already own a DH bike and trail/enduro bike.
Anyone else just staring at how well those forks work?
Why are your triple clamps so far down the fork shaft? At the top it looks like there 1" plus offset. Was this done on purpose to remove some of the slack angle? Or is this to compensate for the extra slack angle the mullet wheel adds to the geo?
We need an episode for hardtails and freeride 😎💪
Hardtail for life baby
I own a XC Hardtail and i tried Bikepark riding on enduros and i enjoyed it very much but i don't want to pay like 100€ every time I go riding so I am looking for a used DH bike rn bc if i take care of it i'll safe money if i go riding more than like 15 times over the period i own the bike. That's why i'll buy one even thought that i can't use it for anything but trails
Looking for a new trek session ..
Would a downhill bike be good for riding trails like telonics and so on in the laguna area? More for shuttling in the area than for bike parks?
I think u should mention freeride and going big. Cause still people buy dh bikes for this reason.
And here I am with my 26er, are there even any around still?
If you love riding your bike and go to the bike park often in the summer maybe a few weekends a year get an Enduro bike If you live at the bike park get a DH bike
