    This is such a cool video topic. Male dominated societies always bug me when it comes to fantasy. Like, dragons are okay but god forbid men respect women.

      I know, people have their heads stuck in actual history or something.

    I think it depends on genre, high fantasy set medieval/feudal times male primogeniture. Wheel of Time has some interesting society's

      Which is kind of the problem, because if it’s a fantasy medieval-based world, why can’t there be women in power? Most of what I love to read is medieval-esque fantasy, & I get so tired of the women being second-class citizens like the actual Middle Ages when it’s a fantasy world & anything should be possible.

      @@UnicornHunterbooks Elizabeth 1st, Mary Queen of scots. lady jane grey all in feudal/medieval England. Even thou at the top from what I remember they were just as violent as Kings to commoners. I suppose what is needed is a society/world where women per see have the main power re inheritance etc. that would be interesting in seeing how power dynamics play out, how would legal system differ, armies etc

    Most if not all modern fiction are female led or have strong female characters

  • @VoyageThroughWorlds

    I just quickly have to plug in The Black Jewels here again (sorry?) ;P and it shows really well how different power dynamics work depending on corrupt structures, because there are societies where women might hold the power, but that doesn't mean that men are less important and others where everything is fucked up cause that is not the case :)

    I love the one in the Seven Realms series! Also, it’s not really a matriarchal society’s but in the Wheel of Time series the magic users are all women and they hold a lot of political power. Oh actually there is another kingdom in that series that IS a matriarchy so it totally counts 😬😬

    What about 'The Mist of Avalon'. I like that story as strong women.

    • @UnicornHunterbooks

      That's a good one, too! The ladies living behind the mists would definitely count as a female-dominated society.

    "why couldn't it have been a son? Meh!"
    And I did love how Three Dark Crowns was basically all ladies and the guys are just there in the corner to be possible husbands lol.

      Yeah, I feel like we need more books that have that kind of society.

    ok, i freaking LOVE this topic--i get so sick of the rote sexism in fantasy. like, my god people you're LITERALLY WRITING FANTASY why do you have to make your pretend kingdoms so shitty towards women??? also i think you won me over to try out Three Dark Crowns XD

    • @UnicornHunterbooks
      @UnicornHunterbooks  6 лет назад

      Exactly, why does so much fantasy have to emulate the medieval attitude towards women, even if it's in a medieval-esque world?
      I remember when I was writing my first book, there was a princess who was learning to fight with a sword, and a friend of mine read it and was like "wouldn't women not do that back then?" and I had to say "well, it's a fantasy world, so whatever."

    • @LiaCooper
      @LiaCooper 6 лет назад

      it's such lazy and frankly misogynist world building. like it's 100% the author's choice to put in those things, that's a social convention they're prioritizing, it's not a universal default. plus, idk about you, but i get enough sexism irl i dont really need it in my other-worlds fiction lol
      it's one of the reasons i rarely pick up cismale written fantasy at all tbh. not that it doesnt happen w/ female authors as well, but i find i have a slightly higher probability of not encountering it at least.

    • @UnicornHunterbooks
      @UnicornHunterbooks  6 лет назад +1

      Haha, it's true, there's already so much sexism in real life that it's much more rewarding to read about societies that don't have that.

    In a matriarchy men and women are equal, that’s what’s wrong with the patriarchy. It’s asymmetrical.

    • @UnicornHunterbooks
      @UnicornHunterbooks  4 года назад

      Exactly. Men in power have tried to undermine anyone who isn’t a (straight white rich) man, whereas a woman in power is unlikely to condemn men for being “different”.
      Hell, the whole reason we have genders in the first place probably has to do with some men back in the day deciding that women were something different so that they could have power over someone.

      Matriarchy literally means rule of women, no men would be involved. What kinda mental gymnastics do you need to do to think that?

    Women love the IDEA of a lead position until they actually get it. Ask any of the women in a relationship with a weak man she has to mother

    • @UnicornHunterbooks
      @UnicornHunterbooks  4 года назад

      As someone who has had several leadership positions in my short life AND a marriage to a man I have to tell what to do, I can tell you that those are 2 completely different things. Also, I love being in power, it just has to be an organization/job/etc that I genuinely care about beyond the paycheck.

      Unicorn Hunter Books I’m not saying you weren’t a good leader in your particular field, but do you honestly think a female dominated society is actually a good thing as opposed to the protection of males at the forefront? Women dominated societies were pretty quickly defeated by male lead outsider invaders. Leadership of a society means putting your neck on the chopping block when the shit hit the fan and I honestly doubt the majority of women want to step up to that burden of a task.

    • @UnicornHunterbooks
      @UnicornHunterbooks  4 года назад

      I don’t think someone’s gender has anything to do with their capabilities or their ability to handle tough situations. After all, there are plenty of male leaders who can’t handle tough situations.
      The reason why female leaders were so quickly defeated throughout history is because women were oppressed back then & men from multiple kingdoms all banded together to get rid of female leaders.

      Unicorn Hunter Books Well to your earlier point you said you disagree with a woman having to be a leader in her own household, but isn’t that just a micro version of society as a whole? If a lot of women hate having to lead their husbands how much more are they going to resent an entire society of men she has to govern and instruct? “Submission” (cooperation) is a dirty word until leadership is given by a very capable man. When leadership is given by weak men then it’s really a problem.

    • @UnicornHunterbooks
      @UnicornHunterbooks  4 года назад

      In my earlier point, I was simply saying that the household is not like society as a whole at all. That's a completely different situation. Also, I never said that women don't like "leading" their husbands. In fact, it's better to tell your husband what to do than have him tell you what to do. Though in an ideal relationship, neither one bosses the other around and they're equal. Because that's a relationship, not a position of power.
