In this video I am going to taste some freak wines. Some of them are very cheap wines, from weird regions and are bottled in strange bottle shapes. Some are just interesting wines.

Try some Georgian wines next, would be interesting to know your thoughts on "New Oldest World". Try some red dry (Saperavi) and some Qvevri (amber wines). Will look forward to see Georgian wines on your channel some day.
    P.S
Georgia definitely doesn't belong to Freak wines, so you will be hopefully surprised and intrigued.

Believe it or not, I've made wine from a blend of Saperavi & Amurensis, grown by Apponagansett Bay Vineyards in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts. The fruit grew during an early frost year (?1997?) and wasn't really fully ripe, but with oak chips and malolactic fermentation it was richer than I expected, reminding me of Zinfandel. I didn't try aging it, I just drank it happily over the next 18 months or so. Cheers!
(I think Konstantin Frank Wine Cellars in the Finger Lakes grows a little Saperavi as well. I've never tried it.)

The Chateau Musar seems very out of place in this line-up - an iconic wine which has been very famous among wine lovers internationally for decades. I have been a huge fan for well over 20 years and have not met a single wine buff who did not know it. Also, it is very widely available across the world, I have spent the past 25 years living in London and Tokyo, and it is very easily available in many decent wine shops here. In London, there is good availability of back vintages dating back 30+ years.

Nice! We cannot get the Great Wall wines here, so that’s a good thing😉. I had a vertical of a 97, 01 and 2017 Musar a couple of weeks ago. I was quite surprised at the significant differences in the 97 and 01. I think it wasn’t bottle variation as all 3 bottles cane from the same individual and had been cellared the same. And it was so great to see how the fruits had changed from the 17.

Your facial expressions are hilarious 😆
I’ve had the Chateau Musar on a number of occasions in both the UK and strangely enough in the USA, it is very bold, full fruit wine and when paired with something like wild boar it’s actually not bad.
I visited Budapest just before the pandemic started, I found a number of their wines reminded me on the Chateau Masur🤔

Just caught up on this video. There are some not great wines out there. In English supermarkets and shop we currently have some real ‘freaks’ such as red and white JamShed (Definitely Jam made in a shed) and then 19 Crimes (well named) which come from Australia before we get to Barefoot (tastes of that) and Gallo basic red (ugh - introduced to that on our WSET level 3 course by our evil teachers). Fancy doing a tasting of these wines? Maybe I have put you off. Love your videos - keep up the good work.

I agree with the other commentators that would like to hear your opinions on Georgian wine. Selfishly, I’d also like to hear your opinion on a couple German & Austrian wine producers that I more and more see consistently available in wine shops and restaurants in the US, for example, Gut Oggau, Enderle & Moll, Meinklang, Julian Hart, Brand, or Weingut Furst. Regardless, I’ll keep watching.

Chateau Musar is iconic with exceptional aging potential. A few other lesser known producers in Lebanon I suggest you try if you’re interested are Atibaia and Domaine de Tourelles. Atibaia’s red is a beautiful blend of Cabernet, Syrah, and Petit Verdot with great concentration and length. Domaine des Tourelles produces a lovely Syrah, Syrah du Liban, that’s rich, round with dark fruits on the palate. In Turkey, the same producer of the wine you tried, Doluca, makes a higher end wine, alçıtepe, that’s fantastic as well. The producer, Selendi in Turkey has some excellent monovarietals as well as their “Selendi Blend” which are some of my favorite Turkish wines. Urla near Izmir makes some interesting wines as well such as the Urla Tempus. Just thought I’d share in case you’re interested in exploring the wines of these two countries more. I’ve visited wineries in both and feel they’re very under appreciated. Thanks for giving them some attention.

Maybe you can find some from Argentina, they are very different, for example I'm from Bolivia and we have some fruit forward tannats with 6 months aged, with vines grown between 1700 - 2300 meters over sea level, the altitude help soften the tanins but keeping or even increasing the complexity

I just want to mention one thing in this video that original roots of ararat and wine making are not turkish, but they are armenian. Don't get me wrong, I'm just telling the history. By the way, you can drink a very good Armenian wine Zorah, which belonged to the top 10 world wines in 2014. Stay thirsty.

Cooking with wine is a whole other category to think about? Or as that French Proverb goes, A fish must be drowned three time, one in the air and twice with wine Or half the bottle of wine for the pot and the other half for the Chef, while preparing the meal. I like using a wine to deglaze the pan the food was roasted or sauteed in and then add some other citrus fruit acid to finish off the sauce. Then there are the marinades with wine and herbs or spices, to which some fish or meat or vegetable is added. A few hours or days later the food is then cooked for the desired result.

Just out of curiosity: Do you think that you might have rated the Waalem Kul slightly better had it been later in the tasting (after the terrible wines)?
Because you rated it 78, almost the same as the Great Wall red's 75.
And while you recommend and seemed to have enjoyed the Waalem Kul (good, refreshing, complex) you described the Great Wall as quite unpleasant (not good, below average and very bitter).
I'm curious how tasting extremely different quality wines before or afterwards might impact one's perception (even for professionals).

I have a bottle of "Kröver Nacktarsch" and "Zeller Schwarz Katz" in my Kitchen just for the purpose of decoration and I never want to drink it because there might be some real trashy wine in it and I think one has to see the third wine you tried in the same category, too: A nice looking souvenir but nothing which is meant to enjoy.
When you tried that wine from Schleswig-Holstein a question came to my mind so I want to ask you: Did you ever drink a wine from the "Stargarder Land"-Region in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and if so: What do you think about it?
I always wanted to try one of the wines they have up there myself but it really seems to be difficult to get one without travelling there.
Besides that another wine I always wanted to try and did not have the chance yet was the Chateau Musar, so thank you for tasting it in this video!

Hello Konstantin, it is nice to see a bottle of wine from Turkey on the table. Our country has a great potential for winemaking, but most people here have some stupid obsessions. I have a question for you. In normal times I live in "Konstantinople," after the emergence of the pandemic I moved to my hometown in the Black Sea Region. This region's wines were not the best throughout history, but today I read an interesting article. According to Xavier de Planhol (Geographer) there was some "sort of" terroir in Tirebolu (Tripolis) for a long period and its wines were among the bests around the Black Sea. Alongside native varieties, I think the Anatolian Greeks might have been using Isabella for winemaking before the population exchange of 1923. Our region is humid and rainy, not a good place for making wine (that is the raison d'etre for Isabella as far as I know), but last year I had an interesting experiment with Isabella. I made some wine intentionally with the most primitive tools and knowledge. I did only crush the grapes, macerated them almost one month, then fermented them for one more month and then "aged" it for only three months. The result was strangely nice. It was a little bit foxy but it also had a rich flavour. That was my first attempt for making wine, and I started learning more about it after this experience. Normally Isabella is not a popular choice for wine, and I wonder your opinion; or it might be even better if you taste some Isabella next time (while tasting weird or cheap wines).

Masters of Wine Peter Koff and Patrick Farrell both agreed that Meiomi produces some of the worst wines out there. They also seem to hate Freak Show wines. I want you to sort out some of you least favorite wines and tell us why you hate them. I also want to see how much you agree with these Masters of Wine.

I’ve been collecting tasting experiences with interesting wines. Turkey has some great wines, although at the airport in Istanbul when I was looking for a Turkish wine, the staff asked me why I’d ever want a Turkish wine and why not have this excellent wine from Burgundy? (I declined to say I can get a much better wine from Burgundy on my own, thank you). I also had some interesting experience with Mexican wine. Japanese “wine” (yes, from grapes not plum). Some interesting wine from China and I almost got a sponsored trip to visit a producer (ahem factory). But my fave so far has been Colorado Chardonnay. I was flying through and so badly wanted to get a bottle for back home but they only sold them at a bar and the bar wouldn’t sell me a sealed bottle. So I got them to open a bottle and then immediately cork it back fully again. I was able to take it on the plane as a carry on. It was actually quite good!

What use is 100 points if lousy "stay away" wine gets 60 points? :P
But I largely do the same when rating beer so...

I tried a wine from India a few months ago and it was horrible. If someone gave it to me to try it blindfolded I even would not have known it was wine. It was more of an liquid accident - pure harassment for my mouth.
It was a Merlot as far as I remember...

How could you only give chateau musar 91 points? Could be one of the best wines i have ever tried. Should be 94 points or more, according to me.
