  • Sandia Crest launch, Albuquerque, NM
Started my time off with a little trip to Albuquerque to fly my favorite mountain, Sandia, where it all began. My dad took the family up the tram there about 30 years ago for a day hike. We were eating lunch at the restaurant on top when a guy got off of the tram with a big long object slung over his shoulder. I curiously watched as he set it up what turned out to be a hang glider. He hooked in, ran, precariously, straight off the sheer, vertical cliff, and climbed out of sight, defying gravity like an eagle! It was beautiful, and I was hooked!
My dad wouldn’t let me take lessons, so when I turned 18 I took my money from bussing tables and mowing lawns, bought lessons, equipment, and started flying. Later that year I got a job at the Sandia Peak tramway, taking people up the mountain every day, but college at The Citadel and flying for the Navy took me far away, and I never got more than a few flights until 2017, when I finally got back into flying. My only goal when I started flying was to fly off of Sandia. So cool to fly by the tram after all of these years!
Thanks, John Nagyvary and Mel Glantz, for flinally making it happen a couple of years ago, and for flying and driving with me when I visit! My favorite place to fly!
