You are Playing Jazz Wrong...

- I see way too many high schoolers treating jazz drumming like rock drumming. You're wrong! (in most cases)
To be clear: a shuffle uses the snare on 2 & 4, and has swing eighth-notes. Fun, cheesy songs use the snare on 2 & 4. But if you are drumming in a combo or big band, your snare should 99% of the time NOT be on the backbeat.

As much as I agree with you on this, you're teaching jazz like its ONE groove. Two MAIN things, you should consider instead of calling your SWING groove SWING, not JAZZ. With that said, in some cases (more than 1% :)) you should have a back beat. You're not a BAD drummer, you're just a misinformed one. Get some more hours behind the kit and define what jazz should sound like. With all that said, you're a good drummer, your comping is COOL (PLEASEE get the BASS DRUM in there) but could use some accents. Also your right hand is too loud :). This msg is just an opinion, please don't get mad 🙏
You're so right!! Jazz is not confined to swing, I am just used to calling swing jazz that's mb. Thank you for all the compliments and critiques! I am very excited to study jazz drumming and percussion in college this fall. I'm not mad at all I really appreciate it! 😁
Nice video! I feel like I've found one of my favorite videos on RUclips, because I'm an aspiring jazz drummer. Many of the things you've said resonated with me.
Wow thank you so much! That means a lot to me, I'm glad I could help! I've still got a lot to learn about drumming as well so we're in this together! ❤️
That shuffle tho (which is a back beat) is in Jazz even though I agree with your example of "cartoon Jazz" , well said. Playing medium slow to medium up and even up tempos with a backbeat or one that's either implied or going in and out of along with all the other stuff is well worth noting. Art Blakey did it as did Philly Joe and others. The organ drummers would do this as well. Even Elvin when playing all his Elvinisms particularly in his amazing medium tempos would either occasionally state a back beat or imply one. Those 3 Wayne Shorter records, Speak No Evil, Ju Ju and Night Dreamer exemplify this. When he wasn't doing it, it still felt like he was because his groove was so deep. Quater notes on the ride are also another often overlooked and/or disregarded for the traditional pattern. That's why a lot of guys trad ride groove although technically correct isn't really swinging. One of the ways to getting it to swing IS to work on 1/4 notes, a lot. Best wishes
Interesting, I'll have to listen a little more deeply I guess. And I LOVE when the ride moves to just quarter notes it makes things swing way harder 😮💨
Thanks for all the tips and suggestions! I'm still in high school so lots more to learn 😁

@@unofficialbobcat Thanks and best of luck with it all.
This is very helpfull, great video
Thanks! I'm glad I could help 😁
Might be helpful to look at some of the other comments too it seems they have more knowledge than me
The disclaimer at the end tho. XD
Lol it's true
You said "spang-a-lang" when it clearly goes "scooby-doo"
Loll I haven't heard that one 😆
Bros preaching
Thanks brother 😁
Appreciate the comment I've really enjoyed your channel
@@unofficialbobcat Thanks man, means a lot!
The up beat is on the 2 and the 4 in swing
I'm not sure I understand
Try comping your snare at a lower dynamic. It should often be quieter than the hi hat. You can also comp the bass drum but not too loud again (same applies to the hi hat and playing broken feel on the ride but I don't think you're there yet)
Thanks so much! Just applied this to my drumming today. Def gotta practice my bass drum comping and feet independence this summer
@@unofficialbobcat if you haven't done so yet I recommend you check out the art of bop drumming by John riley
On it!
The most important difference is that the jazz feel involves triplets. Also you are playing the ride with the same emphasis as when you play the high hat. Try not to emphasize the 1 and 3.
Thanks! I've heard lots of different opinions on ride cymbal accents 🤷♂️
unique
THANK YOU
YOURE WELCOME
Spot on, absolutely correct. I would add one thing: you can also comp a bit on your bass drum. I'm not an expert at it yet, but I've been trying to get better.
Why are you wearing the mask though? Are you Irish or something?
It shouldn't be a BIT on the bass drum, it's a conversation, you want a short convo?
Yes! I have been working on my bass drum comping too. The mask is just to cover my face 😅

@@unofficialbobcat Sure! Whats your user?
i would refrain from making condescending videos on subjects that you yourself don't seem to have much experience in, if i were you.
You're probably right 😅
Genres don’t exist. Play what YOU think sounds good or don’t play at all. Too many people are caught up in reverse engineering music. Anytime someone says a rule in music there should always be an asterisk.
That's so true. I was just tired of high schoolers treating swing like rock. But I very much agree with you 😁
There's some truth to that, however different genres do exist and every genre has is historical context and unique language applied to it. Not trying to say there are strict rules but there are specific things you need to be aware of if you want to sound authentic to that style.
