- In this Chemistry video for Class 10 in Hindi we explained what oxidation and reduction reactions are. We also explained what a redox reaction is. This is a topic of Chapter 1 - 'Chemical Reactions and Equations' for Class 10 from NCERT.
Classical view of oxidation and reduction :
Oxidation : When oxygen is chemically added to or hydrogen is removed from an element, it is called oxidation and that element is said to be oxidised.
e.g., 𝟐𝑴𝒈+ 𝑶𝟐 → 𝟐𝑴𝒈𝑶, here magnesium is oxidised, as oxygen is added to it.
𝑯𝟐𝑺 + 𝑪𝒍𝟐 → 𝟐𝑯𝑪𝒍 + 𝑺, here sulpher is oxidised, as hydrogen is removed from it.
Reduction : When hydrogen is chemically added to or oxygen is removed from an element, it is called reduction and that element is said to be reduced.
e.g., 𝑪𝒍𝟐 + 𝑯𝟐 → 𝟐𝑯𝑪𝒍, here chlorine is reduced, as hydrogen is added to it.
𝑪𝒖𝑶 + 𝑪 → 𝑪𝒖 + 𝑪𝑶, here copper is reduced, as oxygen is removed from it.
Advanced view of oxidation and reduction :
Oxidation : When more electronegative element is chemically added to or less electronegative element is removed from an element, it is called oxidation and that element is said to be oxidised.
Reduction : When less electronegative element is chemically added to or more electronegative element is removed from an element, it is called reduction and that element is said to be reduced.
e.g., 𝑴𝒈+ 𝑭𝟐 → 𝑴𝒈𝑭𝟐,
Here magnesium is oxidised, as more electronegative element chlorine is added to it. But chlorine is reduced.
𝟐 𝑨𝒈𝑪𝒍 → 𝟐𝑨𝒈 + 𝑪𝒍𝟐
Here silver is reduced, as more electronegative element chlorine is removed from it. But chlorine is oxidised.
Now, it is very clear that oxidation and reduction happens simultaneously. So these reactions are known a redox reactions.
