Thank you so much for watching, for being a long-time subscriber, and for your financial support. This really helps a lot to keep this channel running. Have a wonderful day!
Superb as always! This ties in very nicely to a video Tom Scott did about this airport, you can watch him explain how the runway came to be made and then watch a superb landing on this channel! It’s rare that RUclips recommends something I’ll actually like but I am so glad this channel was recommended. Stunning views, superb airmanship and an excellent camera set up. As an aviation enthusiast/geek I really appreciate you having cameras focused on the displays too. Keep up the excellent work!

I enjoyed that! Real hands on flying with a visual approach and you stopped well short of the end of the runway. Easy. As ever a top quality 5 star production, well presented and edited beautifully. For me personally the very best viewing on tv right now. Can’t wait for a new full approach and landing into LPA using this style of presentation! Safe flying.
I used to visit Madeira often , before the runway was extended. It was always a special experience! Now it's so good to see the changes that were made. This was a very nice video thank you !
Thanks for sharing your experience. This landing was short, so we did not use any part of the runway extension. But it is good that the additional runway length is available. Sometimes, we really need it for landing. And we need it for takeoff as well.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos I was trying to come up with a list of challenging approaches. LPMA is one and also Innsbruck (LOWI). Do you have any others I can add to my list please. 👍👍
Wonderful format, and great use of multiscreen (always very tricky to pull off.) Also nice to still see an airport with an outside observation deck, a rare thing indeed!
Thank you very much! Madeira FNC is an interesting airport and the approach to runway 05 is always amazing. Definitely a good idea to extend the pattern a little bit. In my eyes a very stable final approach. You were able to vacate the runway via taxiway B (other than planned). Good job! 👌🏻 Madeira is a nice island for vacation as well. I have been there in July 2021 and got the chance doing a private airport tour (accompany follow me car, views of the extended runway, fire station and so on). It has been an exciting afternoon ✈️❤️They also have emergency equipment below the plateau. Hopefully they don’t have to use it any time. There is also a funny story about the statue of Cristiano Ronaldo at the airport. They replaced it by a new one (you can google it). Obrigado for all your work. Already looking forward to seeing the next video. Maybe you can film a flight to snowy conditions in the future. Would be interesting and different to see the Airbus in icy conditions (anti-ice / de-ice before the flight) - Kiruna (KRN) 🇸🇪 or Kittila (KTT) 🇫🇮 would be an option. Thank you and have a great weekend!
Fantastic approach ! I just come back from holidays there, so it brings back a lot of good memories, it's a fantastic island to visit 😀 I was surprised to notice with my flight how late they put the gear down compared to here (in the base turn), maybe it's TAP other procedures 😅 Thanks again for sharing ! 😄
Thanks for watching and for sharing your observations. There are several possibilities to fly the approach. Gear extension differs a little bit between the various options. There are also Airbus and company regulations which have to be followed.
Very interesting approach - especially the vectored routing to avoid putting you in the hold. The clouds over Maderia were thicker than they looked as you were heading over Porto Santo.
I agree. Most of the time there is some type of a cloud layer in the approach to Funchal. Also Porto Santo is often covered with clouds and not visible during the approach.
Good morning. Once again a wonderful start into the weekend with one of your nice videos. A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to fly the LPMA RNAV 05 approach in the A320 simulator at the Essen-Muelheim airport, which really was a great experience, but to be honest my touchdown wasn't as smooth as yours.😉 Best regards and have a nice weekend 🤗

Hey, A very nice video as always. They just never get boring. I love seeing the approaches from the real cockpit while flying them in the flight simulator as well. For me it will take a little more than 1 year, I am currently in ATPL training. I have a question, when was the video recorded because I would like to see the one or other flight in the playback at Flightradar 24. Maybe you could even include the flight date in the future if it is not already somewhere and I am blind. :D
Outstanding as usual. I note that both pilots seem to keep their hands on the joystick even when the A/P is engaged. Is that so you can take control immediately if the A/P disengages or is it just a comfortable place to rest your hand?
Thanks for your great feedback! Yu are correct about the hand. It is the comfortable rest position. In addition, we are ready to take over immediately. And: The push to talk switch is mounted on the sidestick.
Geniales Video!
What a smooth landing, is this airport particularly difficult for you to land? It looks tricky. Great video as always, thank you for sharing your view from the cockpit it’s so interesting.
This airport is tricky due to very variable winds. In addition, winds are very often changing in speed and direction over a short distance. This is also the reason why the airport authority published very detailed wind limits for the landing.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos thank you so much for replying personally here, the videos are fascinating and for me twinged with a little regret that I didn’t think about being a pilot in my younger years and chose a career driving coaches and then teaching people to drive cars. I am going to do flying lessons though so at least I can say I have had a go in a smaller aircraft, keep the content coming I really enjoy them so much, when I fly as a passenger I can understand what’s happening too. 😎
Thank you sir. Excellent video as always. It was a pleasure to watch. May I ask you some questions: Why did you change from managed speed to selected speed on final? Is it captains landing only at this airport due to the difficult approach?
Thanks for watching and your question! In Funchal, the captain has by regulation of the Portugies authorities to do the landing and the takeoff. Selected speed eliminates speed target changes due to changing winds and the groundspeed mini function. Usually, I fly with managed speed.
That is correct. The authorities in Portugal require that the captain has to perform the takeoff and the landing. Also, special simulator training is required.
Good question! The answer is: It depends. Our first alternate is always Porto Santo. But there may be lots of reasons not to rely on this airport alone and to plan as second alternate airports of the Canary Islands. The apron capacity of Porto Santo is very limited. So if everybody has to divert due to strong winds at Funchal airport, Porto Santo may be unable to accept all the flights. Also, Porto Santo has only non precision approaches with high minimums. If the clouds are low, a landing there may be impossible.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos I have to thank you, not you to thank me ;-) Thanks for sharing us every week great videos. I really love it and I'm not the only one for sure. So Thank You
very nice! 1 thing I didn't understand, in the first clearance by radar what the controllar said after '' number 3 for approach expect....?? '' thank you
They issue expected approach times. This is the time when we have to expect to start the approach. The time did not fit to the current speed. So we reduced the speed and even expected a holding or delay vectors.
What's the reason you asked for a visual approach? I get it on most approaches because it allows for a shorter approach and thus landing faster and using less fuel, but here you flew a longer pattern.
Very good question. You name it already: The visual approach gave us the opportunity to fly the pattern a little wider. Also with the visual approach clearance, we could stay longer at traffic pattern altitude instead of flying at the lower circling altitude. In addition, the visual approach gave us the opportunity to fly longer with less drag (flaps, gear). Due to the later gear extension, we still saved fuel.
Good question! The speed target for the managed speed is based on the ground speed mini function and the current wind. If the wind changes a lot, the speed target may become very variable. To eliminate that, I added some knots to the approach speed and used selected speed.
The autothrust was on all the time. The speed target was set to 140 knots instead of the “managed” speed. The managed speed target changes as soon as the wind changes in speed and/or direction. The name of this function is “groundspeed mini”.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Awesome sir, i have an question, after you turn off autopilot, how do you keep plane on the glide slope? do you monitor ILS magenta diamonds?
@Nikhil astro Once the autopilot is off, we follow the flight director bars. When they are off, we follow the raw data indication of the glideslope and localizer. In Madeira, there is no ILS. As we switched off autopilot and flight directors, I continued visually in accordance to the landmarks displayed in the chart. For the vertical guidance, the PAPIs at the runway and our distance indication from the runway are a good help.
As we flew downwind past the airport on my first visit to Madeira, I thought it looked rather like an aircraft carrier stuck to the side of the mountain.
This are basic IFR flying rules. At and below 14000 feet, the timing is one minute, above 14000 feet it is 1.5 minutes. Some holdings are also flown by a certain distance from the fix instead of the timing. Different timing options are sometimes possible as long as ATC approves it and there are no obstacles. Especially during longer holding periods, we prefer more than the standard timing to reduce the number of turns because any additional turn uses more fuel than flying straight and level.
I watch Pedro a Madeira Airport Streamer, so have seen many approaches so understand the difficulties faced, yours was just amazing and the landing smooth. I have to say Captain you show amazing communication skills with all your 1st Officers, what is always evident is your respect for colleagues. I’m sure for them it must be a great pleasure to be flying with you. Now 75 and having loved Aviation since the age of 10 I love that I recently found your channel and look forward to catching up with your videos. Thank You Sir ✈️
Another very professional video. I do like the pre-and post-flight discussion. And during the flight, there is a good mix of formal commands and informative conversation. Question - how many landings at Funchal must a FO perform before being permiitted to act as Pilot in Command? More, please.
Thanks for watching and your good feedback! Upgrading to a captain and flying to Funchal is not interconnected somehow. In general, only the captain is allowed to land and takeoff at Funchal airport. The captain has to be experienced and needs an approved Funchal training in the simulator and afterwards an introduction flight to Funchal airport. Also, he or she needs to fly to Funchal on a regular basis to stay proficient and current.
That was a really smooth landing. I used to fly to Madeira in my sim. I know this approach is fun and difficult at the same time. But you really showed how pros do it. Please, do record and post whenever you get a chance to land the other side of the runway, i. e. on RWY23. Amazing video again. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! We do not land that often on the runway 23. I try to do a video when I land again on 23. It may take a while. Please stay tuned. Have a great day!
When ATC tells us an expected approach time, we usually slow down and set a speed to arrive as close as possible to the EAT at the initial approach fix.
Amazing video Captain as always I always look fwd to your videos and have prob watched all of them Following from the Uk 🇬🇧. Can I ask when you get updated QNH readings do you do anything with the plane and what does it mean in terms of aviation ? Thank you 😊
Thanks for the great feedback! When the QNH changes during our approach or during the departure, we immediately set the new QNH at our instruments in the cockpit. A change of 1 hpa is equal to a change of 30 feet at our altimeters. A change of QNH in general means that the air pressure at the airport has changed. When we have set the correct QNH at our instruments, the indicated altitude at the runway threshold would be the published elevation of the threshold. If the QNH would be off by for example 1 hpa, the indicated altitude at the threshold would be 30 feet above or below the published elevation of the runway.
Great video as always. I’ve been hoping to see another Madeira video from you! Can I ask when this was filmed as I was in Madeira last week and saw a Eurowings plane landing and I was wondering if it might’ve been yours.
Thanks for being a regular viewer and for your friendly feedback! I usually do not release the exact recoding date. But It was not taped last week. So you must have seen another crew. Have a nice day!

I am very sorry about the tragedy in your country and hope that all the promised support finds the way to the affected people and areas. All the best to you and your families!
Hello Cpt. Another beautiful video! Congratulations!🤩 Funchal is one of the most difficult airports in Europe. To fly the approach and landing so skillfully and beautifully is very impressive! I'm glad I stumbled across your site. because here you can see the professionalism of you CPt. and your FO can follow.👌 It's always nice when there's a new video. What I also think is great is that the approach video starts after leaving the cruising altitude! Great way to follow your work to the gate! If it's ok with you, would it be great to start the approach videos just before leaving cruising altitude? A video of the departure from Funchal up to the cruising altitude would also be great! 🛫 Thanks again for the beautiful videos! With this in mind, I wish you and your crew a nice week! Greetings from Styria! 🤗 Werner
Hello Werner, thanks for watching and the great feedback! Also thanks for your valuable suggestions. There will be more departure videos coming. The length of a departure video is usually determined by the content. If there are still interesting things to see outside, like in the Kos Island departure video, I keep the cameras on. The most interesting work on the flightdeck is usually finished sometime above 10000 once we start to fill in the precalculated times in the operational flightplan. But I keep your suggestion in mind. Have a nice day! Greetings to Styria!
Hello Cpt. Thanks for the answer, which is valuable to me. 😊 I'm looking forward to the next video. I always enjoy watching you at work! 👋 I wish you and your crew a nice week. Greetings from Styria 🤗 Werner
Fantastic as ever - thank you Stefan! I also love that you've started including the briefing in your videos 👍 Maybe you'll come back to Manchester soon and fly the more common 23R approach
Thank you so much for the great feedback! I will try to include the briefing whenever possible in future videos. Thanks for your suggestion for a Manchester video. Please stay tuned for that. Have a great day!
Yet again, awesome video. Thank you Like the 'Picture in Picture' addition too. Question: Why do you have to ask the Tower for a 'Visual' Approach, as if you had to get their permission? How would he know if you were cleared for the 'RNP' but you did a 'Visual' instead? And what difference does it make to him? Thanks again - looking forward to the next one...
Thanks for watching and the great feedback! If you fly the RNP approach and follow exactly the procedure, you have to fly early at the MDA. With the visual approach, we could stay longer higher. If the approach is treated as a circling approach, Airbus procedure would be to fly with gear down and flaps 3 early. With the pure visual approach, flap and gear extension can be done much later. Also, with the visual, we could fly a slightly longer approach than published.
Thank you for another wonderful video Captain! Your First Officer seemed like he was a good match for your professionalism and enthusiasm. It must be a joy to work with someone like that. Thanks to you both for sharing this beautiful approach with us! Was your plane partially loaded? It felt as if you had incredible braking compared to some other landings. Or maybe that is an illusion of runway width?
Thank you so much for your kind words! You are right about the First Officer, I do agree 100 %. I do not remember the load. Usually the flights are very well booked because Madeira is a popular destination during the whole year. The actual landing distance was not that long because we had not to increase the approach speed a lot due to the wind and the flare went very well. Also the runway has an upslope and initially we used max reverse which both helps in the deceleration process. Have a great day!
Another passenger here who landed there before the runway was extended. If memory serves correctly it was a British Airtours/Caledonian Boeing 737. Most amazing and scary airport I've ever been to, there wasn't much runway left by the time we stopped and there was a long drop to the sea on the other side of the wall!
Thanks for sharing your personal experience! We are very happy that they extended the runway. This enables a very safe operation at the airport. Have a great day!
Great Video! I have a question concerning the autothrust… Can you decide whether you want to keep on or off the autothrust for landing? I thought you always has to turn off the autothrust for landing…. Thanks a lot and as always what a stunning video.
Thanks for the great feedback! The pilot flying decides if she or he wants to fly the final approach with autothrust on or off. Airbus recommends to keep it on during all phases of flight, including a manual landing. But we have to stay proficient in doing final approaches with autothrust off. So we usually do some approaches with autothrust on and some with autothrust off on a regular basis.
There´s nothing better than a beautiful approach video on a nice saturday morning :) I always enjoy it when the cockpitcrew gives some information about what you can see as a passenger, really nice! Thanks for your efforts and greetings from Ingolstadt!
Excuse me, I've always had a curiosity, but isn't there a danger of involuntarily pressing the rudder pedals with your feet? or are they blocked? Thanks for an answer and have a nice weekend to all the crew
No, it is not blocked. But there is no problem of an involuntarily use of the rudder. In transport category airplanes, we use the rudder only for the flare during crosswind landings or for single engine flight.
Thanks!

So if everybody has to divert due to strong winds at Funchal airport, Porto Santo may be unable to accept all the flights. Also, Porto Santo has only non precision approaches with high minimums. If the clouds are low, a landing there may be impossible.
Wow thanks, Had no idea Porto was a troubled place to land also.@@ApproachandDepartureVideos
Wonderful!
Thank you very much!
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Thank you very much for the detailed explanation.
Hi I have a question, why on 31:30 you ask for selected speed 140 if the managed speed was already 140 knots?
Good question! The speed target for the managed speed is based on the ground speed mini function and the current wind. If the wind changes a lot, the speed target may become very variable. To eliminate that, I added some knots to the approach speed and used selected speed.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos ok, thank you, I use a lot your videos for self training in my PC simulator. I really enjoy your videos. Have a nice day.
I noticed you set speed to 140 kts rather than autothrottle. is this preferred in this approach?
That is the perfect description for the airport! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Question. in flying a holding pattern such as Pilim how do you know how long each leg of the hold should be? Thanks
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos thank you that’s very interesting.
At 6:20 there's an error in the balked landing instructions. Instead of RCF it puts RFC, in the normal missed approach is well written 😂😂
Thanks for your comment. It looks to me that it may be a typo.
👍👍👍👍🤝🏽🤝🏽🤝🏽🇲🇦🇲🇦
Thanks!
Thanks for watching my videos, for sharing your personal experience and for your very kind words! Have a nice day!
Don’t ever stop these videos. Gold 👌🏼
Thanks for your kind words! Have a nice day!
Awesome videos, amazing, greetings from GCLP/LPA
Really this is a very good video. Very well produced, extraordinary pictures and an amazing landing. Congratulations and thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much for watching and for the good and very detailed feedback! Have a nice day!
Your videos ROCKS Captain!!!!!
Please keep up this good work.
Greetings.
Glad to hear that you like them!
Very very instructive, I will try this approach with MSFS 2020 and the A320 Fenix, thanks for your vidéo !
It's great to hear that you like the video. Have a wonderful day!
Weve landed in Madeira last year..well I love everything about it including place itself. Will go again. Thanks for a video
Thanks for watching and for sharing your personal experience!
Thanks for your great videos! Is it Eurowings policy to speak English in the cockpit or is it only for the video?
Thanks for your nice feedback! We can speak German or English. The crew decides. The manuals and the checklists are all in English.
Surberb landing you are a very skilled Pilot, excellent. How long have you been a Pilot?
Thanks for the nice feedback. I fly since more than 30 years. Have a great day!
superb great videao and now also with sideview cameras ....thumbs up !!!
Marcus, thanks a lot for the wonderful and helpful feedback! All the best to you! Have a nice day!
As always a fantastic video! , it was your choice to set vmd speed to get on the holding point at the EAT?
When ATC tells us an expected approach time, we usually slow down and set a speed to arrive as close as possible to the EAT at the initial approach fix.
Amazing!!! Landing sir
Thank you!
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos thankyou ! For a very in-depth reply I appreciate it looking fwd to your next videos
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos ah ok. Thanks anyway!

Thank you!
Hello Cpt.
Another beautiful video! Congratulations!🤩
Funchal is one of the most difficult airports in Europe. To fly the approach and landing so skillfully and beautifully is very impressive!
I'm glad I stumbled across your site. because here you can see the professionalism of you CPt. and your FO can follow.👌
It's always nice when there's a new video.
What I also think is great is that the approach video starts after leaving the cruising altitude! Great way to follow your work to the gate!
If it's ok with you, would it be great to start the approach videos just before leaving cruising altitude?
A video of the departure from Funchal up to the cruising altitude would also be great! 🛫
Thanks again for the beautiful videos!
With this in mind, I wish you and your crew a nice week!
Greetings from Styria! 🤗
Werner
I'm looking forward to the next video.
I always enjoy watching you at work! 👋
I wish you and your crew a nice week.

Fantastic as ever - thank you Stefan!
I also love that you've started including the briefing in your videos 👍
Maybe you'll come back to Manchester soon and fly the more common 23R approach
Thank you so much for the great feedback! I will try to include the briefing whenever possible in future videos. Thanks for your suggestion for a Manchester video. Please stay tuned for that. Have a great day!
Not easy .. Bravi, Bravi.
Thank you. Have a nice day!
One of my favourite places to land with the A320 in MSFS 2020!
Thanks for watching and your feedback!
Yes! Always a good day when Stefan has a new video out. And Funchal too! This'll be awesome.
Thanks for the friendly words! All the best to you!
Appreciate the video! Hello from SIN/WSSS!
Thanks for watching and greetings to Singapore!
There´s nothing better than a beautiful approach video on a nice saturday morning :)
I always enjoy it when the cockpitcrew gives some information about what you can see as a passenger, really nice!
Thanks for your efforts and greetings from Ingolstadt!
Thanks for watching and the nice feedback! Lots of greetings to Ingolstadt!
Best aviation channel, great job Captain 👍
Thanks a lot! Please tell all your aviation friends about the channel. Thank you in advance. Have a wonderful day!
Smooth landing, i really love when pilots land without a precision approach, it reminds me what real pilots are without interference of machines. ❤️❤️
