Hi, I need to learn to understand what my dog is trying to communicate to me or what my dog’s feelings are about things, training, requests, etc. I hear you say pay attention to what your dog is telling you, and I want to learn. Thanks!
Hello Dogs That team and Susan! I think I may know the answer, but I don't think I've heard you address this issue specifically. What would you suggest if your puppy or dog doesn't really play on their own much and just stares at their owner if they aren't engaging the dog? Is this just a confidence/ comfort issue that should gradually change as confidence is built? My dog is on the timid/softer side, and she just seems to stop doing anything on her own inside the house unless I'm very close or observing. I want her to be able to enjoy her time when I'm not doing stuff with her, but I'm unsure entirely how to produce a positive change. She has toys around but will lose interest rather quickly like 30 seconds- 5 minutes max.
I just watched the podcast that contained/explained the Threshold Game. I'm wondering how or if something like this would work in our situation. Our 4.5 month old puppy gets super excited to see other people and dogs. It's a little easier to address when it's people coming over to our house (and I've watched Susan's video about calm greetings). But we don't know what to do when she's outside. Often when we are in the yard for pottying, a neighbor will start to come over, or someone will be walking down the street with their dog... or similar situation at the park. Our puppy gets more and more excited as they get closer (straining, barking, etc.), and sometimes I end up having to drag her away. There's just no getting her attention at that point. What can we do to prevent this reaction from her, especially since it often pops up without advance notice?

Is she crate trained? Well?
