The original crossbow was slow AF so people would charge right after you shot and that be the end of you. So Archers Got Gud and multi shotted. Btw if you didn't know, long bowmen "botkin" arrows could pierce early tanks, because that's basically what knights were, walking tanks. Samurai and whatever Chinese warriors were would also bum rush you between arrows and even guns. That's why guns never took off in China even though they had them 500 years early. Gunmen were the weakest troops.

Fun fact: in the manhwa in the dungeon where the convict massacre happened one actually survived (not in one piece as he was tortured and with his throat cut so he couldn’t scream for help). Jin woo found the guy and dragged him to the boss room where a bunch of hobgoblins were at (much worse and have a love for plucking out human organs) where he proceeded to throw the guy to the horde as a distraction so he can get the boss without the hassle of the side goons.

20:00 funfact. The reason Jin Woo could stop that attack is because of the way armor works in this universe. The armor that drops in dungeons has modifiers on it that you would expect to find in ARPGs like +stats or elemental damage on weapons. They don't show this detail in the anime but the gauntlet Jin Woo uses to stop that attack had the indestructible modifier on it which is the only reason he survived it.
