    I used these for years in factories. You either used a gantry or a jib. Gantry goes a lot farther in a small shop. I lifted the whole front of my car to do brakes and suspensiond back in the early 80s. All you had to do was put something like an old boat cushion between the chain and the bumper in a friends tool and die shop.

    Fortunately for me, I inherited a home with a huge garage that I could put 3 class A motor homes in. It also already had a huge Crain lift in the garage too.
    They certainly do come in handy more often than one would think! I don’t have two Crain on it, but I do have a smaller wench hooks up to my ceiling in the garage for lifting lighter weight. It’s a 3 bay garage and these are in 2 of the bays. Works out pretty well for my needs so far! Especially considering I didn’t have to pay for anything who can complain? 😂

  • @corey6393

    Great idea with the modifications. The cam action on that hand crank is an interesting piece of engineering. Smart to smooth it out a bit. Sounds like you need to shorten the crank handle after moving the mechanism out of the way. Gonna suck to bang into the brace with every revolution.
    I usually just use the trusses in my shop from which to hang a hoist for engine pulls and such, but am limited by 9' ceilings. A gantry would be nice to have around for sure. We had a huge one in a boat shop where I worked back in the 90's. Pulled a few big boat engines with that thing. Not sure whatever happened to it.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  Год назад +1

      Yeah shortening or rebending the hand crank is definitely the plan. I just want to make sure it's in the position I wanted to be in.
      I keep lifting from the 2x4 trusses in my garage and I'm afraid one day I'm going to bring down the ceiling. Try to limit myself to maybe 200 lb....

    • @corey6393
      @corey6393 Год назад +3

      @@sixtyfiveford I run a 2 1/2" pipe over 4 truss bottom chords and hang a chain from the center of that. Plenty strong for what I do, (4 cyl car engines and such) but I wouldn't lift a V8 or a 1500lb trailer with that setup.

    I bought one of those years ago, for an unplanned project that needed to be done within 2 days. I ran into exactly the same problem with one of the cable winches... it just wasn't make correctly or greased at all. It failed before the first use and it was the only one they had and the cable winches were already scavenged off the floor model (should be a warning sign). Not finding a replacement readily at hand I ended up taking the cable off and the guts out and drilled a hole and just attached the cable directly to the center pin which actually made that side easier to use. I had planned on getting 2 cheap boat cable winches to use since I was assuming the other one would soon fail, even though I cleaned it up and added some decent grease. Its been many projects and neither have failed and I honestly like the way my jury rigged side works better as even though it doesn't hold the tension for you it goes up and down much faster and easier and I am only using it under load until I can stick the pin back in. I have always wanted to widen mine so that's going in the mental filing cabinet, although I am going to steal your two troll and winch idea asap...

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  Год назад

      It's a really unique design and since everything at HF is a clone of a real product, I'm sure it was made nicer originally. The original was probably all machined from hardened steel. It did drastically reduce the effort(about 1/2) after I smoothed out the cast iron though. I saw reviews on youtube where guys replaced them with boat winches but I like the simple wrap around the center shaft.

      Rated 4x for a single lift. But at what multiple of the rated capacity do you cross the Rubicon on the S-N curve?

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  Год назад

      @@scottfreedoms9584 Nobody's lifting at 4x the rated too fatigue the steel. The point is the 2-3% load capacity lost due to increasing the span isn't going to lead to failure if used at capacity. Even if you did these are high cycle items and may only lift something 20-30 times in their life.

      It's one of those things that I don't use very often, but when I need it, it's the right tool for the job. I think if they were more mainstream the prices would drop substantially. Right now they're kind of ridiculously priced.

    Love your work. I can’t buy anything without modifying it. Because it my only disagreement is with the puny assed safety flagging. By code it’s supposed to be 12”x12”(144 sq in). Some overzealous DOT/commercial cop or a barber fife will stop you and red tag your load until corrected. But personally I’ve done it both ways. Found out the correct way is cheaper and a lot less painful financially

    Do you suppose a guy could get a box of sorts and rig it up to that gantry crane and put the dog in the box and pick the dog up with the gantry crane?

    Harbor Freight, some tweaks required. That's what's great about HF stuff. Your already going to be modding it so why not tweak it to fit you.
