I’d like to see the old Floridian route utilized by another train some day. Amtrak could give it whole new name. I liked the snacks at the coffee station. You don’t see that very often.
My grandfather worked on the B&O for 30 years. As a brakeman on the Sand Patch route I believe. I may have ridden their Capital Limited when little, but my mother said the family did to get to DC and then to family in Richmond.
You should be happy with the food selection at all. I went across country in the 80s, while in the Army and ate vegetable lasagna for 2 out of the tree meals. It was the cheapest, I rode coach from Texas to Chicago to LA. In the Rockies in February, they pulled onto a siding and powered the train down. I froze my rear off in the Rockies while looking at some of the most beautiful scenery in America.
I was out west in Oregon and recently rode on a amtrak. It was only a 3 hr trip but still very enjoyable... i was hoping to be able to get a roomette or bedroom an take a cross country trip with my brother. But unfortunately we can't afford it. An coach seating doesn't allow shower usage, i cant go that long of duration without a shower. For what they give you the price is way too expensive, i hope they get back to quality food and services an lowers the cost of fares... thanks for sharing.
6:10 Those Superliners with a Charger Amtrak Midwest loco was the Saluki headed downstate to Carbondale. CN needs the heavier consist to trip the signals on the old IC line.
The only downside I see with this new service is Tampa residents no longer have a one seat ride to points north of DC. That said it does bring benefits. The route of the Capitol is back to traditional dining and this move frees up more Superliners for the western routes!
Rode the Cap for the last time on November the 9th from Cumberland, MD to DC and back. It was sad to see her pull out of the Queen City for the last time...
@Neville60001 ...the Fred Harvey company restaurants civilized the west via the railroads back in the middle to late 1800's; unsurprised quality and service. Fred Harvey restaurants survived until the early 1970's aboard the last passenger railroads and at free standing restaurants along major highways and toll roads (i remember them along the Illinois Tollway system.)
I enjoyed the picture of the salad at the start of the first meal, the spoon was almost as big as the salad, unfortunately a lot of Amtrak food service is just glorified Mc Donalds- on- rails
This ride was a wonderful way to finish my cross country adventure starting in Seattle on the Eastbound Empire Builder Train # 8. The dining was a stark contrast to that of traditional dining which I experienced on #8 that was amazing . Luckily, on the Capital the salmon was not that bad.for diner It was a pleasure meeting you in our car.
They wanted to put extra superliner cars on the west coast trains so they combined this train with the Sulver star and using the 1 floor viewliner cars and called the new train the Floridian.
The Floridian is nothing more than the Silver Star and the the Capitol Limited combined. It travels the same routes they always have. A true Floridian would be routed from Miami through Atlanta, then through Nashville then to Chicago.
@@PaulBishop-v1oThe original Floridian was not reliable either. Poor track conditions causing slow speeds and reliability issues was what led to its discontinuation in 1979.
I am very sad that the Capital Limited was discontinued. The new rout of the Floridian is ridiculous. I will soon fail because it is inefficient. Too many miles to get to its finally destination. Who in their right mind would go all the way from Miami to Chicago. Apart from the delays poor service smelly cars why would anyone want to travel by Amtrak?
The Flexible Dining was one of the cost saving ideas the last Trump administration brought to Amtrak. Expect more similar cheapness over the next four years now that he's back in office.
...this is supposedly temporary thru 2027 due to two factors: longer maintenence turn times on the 40yo superliner equipment, limiting availability; and the east river tunnel project in new york, stubbing the silver star in washington dc and forcing a connection to get to new york. Amtrak needs to be privatized (brightline?) In order to get back to what they should have been doing.
Amtrak makes money on both the Northeast Corridor (NEC) which they own the tracks and the routes that the states own the tracks. The problem is when they are on the freight lines. Privatization will not work unless you have a single entry that controls all the lines and scheduling. Then you are back to a government control in order to avoid a monopolization problem. There has to be better corporation between Freight and Amtrak to enforce the current law. Honestly, on the Amtrak long distance routes, how many Amtrak trains are running compared to freight in both directions, in particular, the single line track?
I wouldn’t count on the former returning. Amtrak had plans to return the Sunset Limited to its New Orleans to Miami route when the tracks were repaired after Katrina. Now here we are 20 years later service has not resumed.
@@johnsons74thsquadron74 I read in some rumor mill that Amtrak was looking to return back to the original Capital Limited Route of the B&O or trackage further west of the present route. Hence, the Floridan's new route if it remains leaving the Silver Meteor as the east coast route out of New York City to the sunshine state.
the food looks crap i would not pay what you did for rubbish service like that as i have to fly into usa i go by plane or car and stop where i want amtrak are laughing all the money they make and trains always late here in europe at laeast we do have night trains and fast trains
Shameful to serve that and call it food. I could tell your chicken parmesan wasn't even real chicken It was lab created. The stringy meat gives it away. For that price They didn't even have the decency to serve you real meat. I was thinking of just getting on a train and doing sightseeing getting a room but this has discouraged me. Put that price I expect more. 🫤😐
Shout out to @StonePearl for catching this final train at Point of Rocks, Maryland!

I made the trip about 20 years ago.
Thank you Amtrak and Larry the steward. Hope all is well in Baltimore.
Excellent 💯💯

you got hosed on the food part…

The company should consider letting a company like Wagon-Lits run the catering on the trains.
@Neville60001 Fred Harvey used to handle the SuperChief for ATSF in the day.
@@albertpeterson5585, was this company any good with food?

Someone should tell Amtrak to take it easy on the cheese for that parm.

Their food service would be better with sodexo 😅

Why did they discontinue?

its only temporary while the fix the River tunnels. They have Beech Grove too. but i dont know if its bigger.
I have to agree, Flexible Dining is terrible.

Except it now runs twice as behind schedule as it did before 😂
