@@dflowhoops exactly people need to start respecting two way players. So annoyed with these “superstars “ who have to hide on defense. That’s part of the game!
The problem with most casuals today is they measure greatness with aura and highlights. Not numbers, specifically advanced and tracking stats. Traditional box scores are for casuals. This is where Tatums greatness lies. In tracking stats like most wins (whats a more important stat than wins), in intangibles (the capability to defer and not be heliocentric) and advanced stats (like being one of the league leaders in screen assists last season). If a person isnt the type to look or value those stuff and defensive metrics, they wont know how to appreciate tatum. Tatum is pretty much a modern day tim duncan. Note, before people cry that tatum isnt on Timmys level, i'm not comparing how good each are. I'm comparing how they are personality-wise, where their greatness lies and how they were disrespected. As a Spurs fan growing up, i still remember so many people calling Timmy "soft" and only won because he had good players on his team.
Interesting points about the things more hardcore fans value that I’ll keep in mind. Narrative wise there certainly are some similarities between Tatum and Duncan too. Appreciate your comment
@@dflowhoops yeah if you're the type that gets impressed only with triple doubles and getting a 40 pc mcnugget, tatum will be overrated, a scrub and "why did this guy win a chip?". Tatum will impress folks who look at +/- or net rating, PPP, potential assist, OPP FG% in iso situations and the like. Basically, stuff that front offices, basketball nerds and scouts look at. Casuals will look at triple doubles, high scoring numbers and completely ignore defense. They would be the ones who'd think OKCs signing of Caruso is overrated. Theres a reason that tatum hasnt missed the playoffs since his rookie year and has been to the ECF 5/7 years hes played. The guy simply impacts winning. A good modern day comp for tatum would be kawhi, when hes healthy.
The tracking data you mentioned before I have to look at more of as well. I'll look to bring good things for every type of fan. Yeah some narratives casuals stir up are annoying, like that Caruso one. Some things seem overhyped but are actually just worth the hype and are as they are. The amount of conference finals Tatum and Brown prove they're winning players. And Tatum has a different impact on winning than Kawhi but in terms of the success they've had, yes.
@@dflowhoops yup. Casuals look at caruso and see he scores under 10 ppg and dont understand why some people hype him. Caruso is arguably the 3rd best and at least top 5 2-way guard in the league. Hes the closest you can get to a jrue holiday in the west. A screen there, a quick pass here, a shotblock there, a clean contest here, a timely cut to open up a driving lane... just does alot of things that impact winning that dont show up in the box scores. Kawhi and Tatum arent too similar in terms of their offensive bag but in terms of their demeanor (quiet, reserved, no aura) and impact on the other end of the floor (tatum's defense is way underrated, especially his ability to guard 1-5). Kawhi imo is the better shotmaker + defender but tatum was the better passer, screen setter and rebounder. Their similarity lies in that their most prized contribution isnt actually scoring the ball.
It's amazing how Caruso's developed since being in L.A. He really is one of the games top defenders now. Jrue Holiday is in a league of his own with his clamps, so a bit of a lofty comparison but even the fact that AC is in the ballpark of Jrue says a log about his growth as a player. You're right though, the mans energy is incredible and he can light it up in an instant with his hustle. I wouldn't say Kawhi and Tatum have no aura, they are great personalities in their own way. I also wouldn't say JT's quiet. They are most similar defensively, being laterally quick for their size. That said they are a tad different on this end too because Tatum thrives by using his length where as Kawhi's strength is his best asset.

I'll say that I had my doubts about Brad Stevens moving to the GM spot. He had no experience in that role and his struggles managing personalities as HC didn't necessarily bode well. Boy has he proven me wrong. Almost all of his moves have been very smart and well calculated. More importantly, he's really dodged the managing personalities issue by just getting guys with the right personality.
