Agreed with everyone about bolting vs welding. I will say after watching the build series, these are some of the best welds I've seen him lay down.
Welding directly to the front crossmember is crazy. What are you going to do if you need to service anything of have to remove the front bumper? take the whole crossmember out?
just weld another cross member under it probably
Not to mention you could do all your welds in position on a bench.
Kristi6speed ya seems lazy to me. If you bolt it on it'll be much easier to fix or replace.
If the truck hits something just enough to bend the bumper it'll take that crossmember out real quick. ;-)
Yep the video is good but i was wondering the same thing
This is such a good series of videos. I wish you guys would do more. Very inspiring.
I love you guys!! It's my dream job to be an off road fabricator, I'm really good friends with the owner of Jimco Racing Mike Julson, he was going to hire me buy can't because Im not 18 yet, but he told me to come back right after I turn 18 so my dream job is waiting! As for now I watch all of these and admire your guys' skills!! Thanks for educating !! -Brandon
Well with that model Silverado the upper part of the stock bumper is acting as a valence it's mostly plastic, because of the step down from the headlights to the grill. In regards to the weight you really don't want a light prerunner so the shocks can work. One of our older projects is a Ranger and it was too light when we added the bypass shocks. Still glad to hear the video helped you and yes more to come.
Damn nice bumper! Props for the upside down welding too. I would have bolted the bumper to the cross member and added a bar above the lights between the diagonal bars for more strength. Great looking build!
great job the only thing he forgot to cover the front end of the car from weld splater
This build is going well. Like everything up to this point. Not at fan of the sheet metal supports or the valances on the bumper. I am more of a simple single tube across and bars for the skidplate kind of guy though. Keep up the great work.
Sir, you made it look so easy!
I thought that overall, in front, the finished product would have shown much taller in its height.
However, a great job, and video too.
Thank you, glad you like the show
I'm not a big fan of this style of bumper. but I love the workmanship, keep up the good work!
Man I wish I was this creative
Pretty soon you'll be able to have your own prerunner. Austin on the show started building his when he was 15.
I check youtube everyday for a new episode, I love it! :D
I love your videos and your welder is incredible! Like Brandon I'm considering becoming an off road fabricator. Keep the videos coming!
That is great. Jimco makes some great stuff. This is my dream job too, but it took me a lot longer to get here. Good luck!
I used to be on the fence about it but I like it now. When you say bodywork what are you referring too? What we did to the factory bumper or the fiberglass?
Yes .120 wall and to notch the tube we use a tool called a Pipe Master to mark our notch then cut it out with our plasma cutter, then clean it up with a grinder.
You should make these in kit form for the DIY guys out there. I know I'd by one.
Very nice work man .. keep it up... cant wait to see more
looks great! well thought out and nicely executed!
Thanks glad you liked it!!!
prerunnermaniac shut up poop
Those are some big ol gaps on your notches!
Also, why not make it bolt-on for when the tubes get bent hitting stuff? Not to mention ever servicing the damn thing.
Your welds look nice though.
That some nice welding there young man. Well done.
After we get the main structure of the bumper built we use the tape to determine the look we want. Then we make a template out of poster board and transfer it to the aluminum.
Ya I used to think the same thing coming from drag racing, but without enough weight it is hard for the shock to do its job.
For power we have an Airaid intake, an exaust and a Superchips Flashpaq, not V8 power but definitely woke up our 4.0.
I sure hope this dude got paid good money for this project, not only his Fab skills but also for his personality on the show. I can watch him unlike some other guys that just make me cringe.
Just search for a plastics company in your area. We told them we needed it 5 inches tall and it came 8 feet wide. Was only around $30. You might also ask them what texture it comes in. Ours came textured on one side and smooth on the other. Use the textured side out otherwise it will get scratched up.
You can get fiberglass and prerunner bumpers made for your truck but no one makes a long travel kit for that truck that I know of. Is it a diesel?
i really like the bumper but how do you plan on taking it off, if you ever have too? u welded it all solid
Cut off wheel or plasma cutter and you make a new one...very common with this type of bumper.
What location did you mount your light switches and how did you wire them I'm trying to find a good place for the switch panel in my 2011 Silverado love to see a video how too
Pipe is actually different than tube...we are using 2" tube for this. You can also use 1.75" tube. We're glad you like the show.
All you got to do now is rip off that vinyl junk and it's like one of the nicest bumpers I've ever seen. Great Job!!
Thanks I think you also said 120 wall also in another vid is this correct. And how did you get the round cuts in the end of the tubing . ThAnks for getting back to me
Bad ass! Am doing the led bar to the back of my 2013 focus. Nice job love the vid.
Sounds interesting
Where did you guys pick up the valance from? Does it come in a sheet
Hey sorry you didn't like that part of the build. It is hard to know what "everyone" likes, but glad you still like the show. When we get to the F150 bumper are going to be doing we are fabricating a more conventional style prerunner bumper but it too will have a twist on conventional.
Why go thru all the trouble to make the thing look so cool just to cover it with plastic things that look stupid!it literally covers most the side metal poles. Great build though, incredible!
+Chris Hansen yep I liked it better without that plastic on it to and he should have bolted it to frame not welded it so it could be powder coated or bedlined easier
I was wondering the same thing about the lights ....thanks
Love this build. Wat schedule tube did you use. ??
what size pipe are using? i plan on building a bolt on for my truck in the next few weeks. great job on the vids by the way.
one question... why not build a bracket for the supports on the front cross-member instead of welding it on? if you ever have to take that bumper off your going to have to cut it off. Is there a specific reason for this?
Just what I was thinking, and also if you hit something hard you risk bending your crossmember.
hey what size wire is in your welder and are you running gas in it to weld the bumpers?
When putting in the skid plate bars on the cross member why didn't you plate the cross member first? I mean wouldn't it add extra strength to the assembly?
I don't know if lexan would work...I know it is used for windshields on race cars, but I don't know about this application.
Were did you buy the abs plastic, tab and fasteners?
I like your page, good stuff you are doing. A little word of advice, before you weld on that steel, you should grind off the mil scale....
Glad you like the show. We upload new shows each Saturday.
Hi i was wondering what steel you guys used. considering the bumper was welded solid to the truck so you really cant take it off to powder coat it. Thank you
Vfvhh
what size tubing/ thickness would y'all recommend using for front bumper work?
What are the specs of the metal and pipe you used? Im looking to make a bumper like this one in my shop class.
Why would you leave the factory bumper on? That’s just goofy Lookin.
Sorry you didn't like it
@@dirtlifemagazine I just don’t see the point 🤷🏻♂️
The abs valence was silly and took away from the look, however i did appreciate showing how to do it, if it was warranted on a different application.
How much time does it take you guys to build
I've been planning to do this on 05 for quite sometime now. Would the kit affect the weight it carries in the bed?
Thanks glad you like it!!! Just wait until you see the F150 we are building.
where can i get that plastic abs you used?
Was this stainless steel? Looked like you didn't paint it?
very good fab work, props
Thanks!!!
can i do everything to my 96 silverado that u do with this one with just a welder and a grinder and a circular saw?
That would have worked if we made it a bolt on bumper. For our upcoming F150 prerunner build we will be fabricating a bolt on bumper.
GREAT WORK
I have a 95 ford ranger 4.0 245. I want to get a new air intake system, do you have any suggestions? its a daily driver to school, work, and around town but also like taking friends off road and showing a good time. can you help me out?
Airaid or K&N. They're both good.
aparently your not worried about approach angle... Why didnt you take off the stock bumper
Everyone has their own idea...why would you bolt on? Welding is much stronger. Today we just did a new bumper on this Silverado. If you go to Instagram you can see it at @vegasdezertfab
I always wonder why he doesn't use a piece of metal to guide him when he cuts with the plasma. He would get much straighter cuts. haha but I also admire how straight he can cut without it.
Where did you get the short end caps like that?
yeah!
Where’d you get the abs plastic valence?
We had a plastics company here in Las Vegas cut us a piece then we did the rest.
Very nice looking job, nice welding skills, I wouldn't weld it to the chassis and cross member, what if you need to service it or replace it and the wiring is kind of weird, what about to run the wiring inside te tubes keeping them out of the view, everything was looking great until you put the valance, it makes the job looks low budget "cheap" and don't think it will do too much difference in aerodynamics. Good job, keep it up!!!!
Where is a good place to find the materials I have a 04 Chevy Colorado 2wd
for a rear bumper guard would 1 3/4 tube be good, or would rod be best
Please what model truck I know it's a chevy 08 but more detail please???
It's a Silverado 1500
Weld on is stronger but if you watch our F150 bumper video we made that bolt on.
I noted the wiring behind the lights is not protected well, and how about those lights do it watar prove
Why do you guys weld the bumper to the frame? why not bolt?
Ho did you guys find the right size for the skid plate.?
Brilliant!
Where do you guys buy the abs valance matereal?
Can we please bring this channel back?
It depends on what you do in the rear.
1 3/4" would work fine for a rear bumper, make sure it is .120 wall tube.
You mounted your flood lights right beside the blinders.
Fabbing mounts instead of permanent weld on would have probably been better, but I love the design.
Do you have to use a shield gas for a plasma cutter?
no
just standard compressed shop air.
New to welding, what type of welder is that, tig?
Great work
that's a Mig
Thanks a lot
No problems, if you have any questions feel free to ask
Using a variety of smaller KCHilites light bars gave us more flexibility.
how much pipe did u guys use
how much would this whole front bumper set up cost to do
+Henry Leach i was wondering the same thing and how much pipe they used
Could I get a copy of the templates of the beackets
Were can i get prerunner stuff for my 05 f250
I would have liked to see the wires for the lights cleaned up a little better.
what kind of a welder are you using?
Mig
@prerunnermaniac How much would a bumper like this run for a 07 Nissan Frontier?
Please email me at info @ vegasdezertfab dot com and I'll give you a price.
Could you do these for my 2004 Gmc sierra 1500
I can drive to you place i know ppl out there what wound cost be
I would have taked the whole bumper first then pulled it off todo my final welds this would also allow me to have no over lap on boxing my frame rails
Could u built something like this for the newer cummins?
The only way would be if you could bring it to the shop in Las Vegas.
No we can butwe could try
Hey does anyone know where I can get a long travel kit for an S10?
Check out Dezert Dimes...they can probably help you
What technique of welding is that?
MIG
The valance looks like one you would find on a go kart
good job
