- Hi. I recommend watching "Desolate" again before you see this one so you have an idea of where I left off. I wanted someone to be able to watch all three in a row and have them link up timeline-wise.
Song this time around is "Line of Sight" by ODESZA. I had a few others I was tossing around but this is the one that stuck. I really hope you enjoy this one, these big projects are very draining.

I love how even little “non canon” moments are included in this. Such as the lightning strike on Tommy and Tubbo taking a bullet in the middle of the battle. Such excellent work and attention to detail. Really knocked it out of the fucking park with this one.

That's one of the reasons I dislike the arbitrary "3-life rule". It gets in the way of having natural gameplay moments become awesome story moments (which I would argue is sort of the point of the server).
I understand the need for a life system, if characters can die and come back infinitely then there's no stakes (if you ignore the fact that the dead can just keep playing on the server as a "ghost" lol).
I think the solution lies not within how many lives someone has, but rather how serious that death is. If someone dies from fall damage randomly, that can be canon. Maybe it just "chips away" at their soul a little. But the big hits take larger chunks away from their soul. That would explain characters like Wilbur and Schlatt actually staying dead (until something meaningful can restore their soul).
Tommy can survive a lightning strike because his soul is near indomitable.
Take Phil for example. Maybe he started off with the same soul energy as everyone else. But the trauma of IMMEDIATELY having to murder his son weakened his soul SO MUCH that a SINGLE death would kill him for good.

It would also explain how Tommy's victory over Dream to secure the future for his friends would emotionally allow Wilbur's soul to temporarily return to the physical world.
Consider that Technoblade started off emotionally shut off. Never allowing anyone or anything to chip away at his soul. "Technoblade never dies". Eventually however, he made some genuine connections with Phil and Ranboo. Now that Tommy has "betrayed" him, he's probably a bit more vulnerable. Imagine if Phil dies, or when Ranboo's connection with Techno is inevitably shattered in a dramatic way. Technoblade will probably die. That'll be a meme for awhile. F.
TL,DR: *theory* Maybe all deaths are canon, and the severity of the death (physically or emotionally) affect the player's overall soul energy. I provided some cool examples too

I love how the red keeps shifting depending on perspective, signifiying that not everything is as simple as right or wrong. From tubbo and tommy's perspective, techno is in the wrong. Meanwhile, from technos view, he was betrayed by tommy, after all techno did for him since his exile, and dare I say he had finally started to trust someone other than philza before tommy ruined it all. Meanwhile, there's one character who is inherently in the wrong, the cause of it all, dream. You can see that his red is brighter when he is on the mountain, signifying how more and more people are beginning to realise how he is in the wrong. I love the scenes with ranboo and how the colors keep keep shifting, showing his internal conflict. Especially the glitching when he finds the disc, its the first time he really believes what he'd been telling himself with the voice of dream this whole time. There's another side of him, and it's working with the one person who he KNOWS is the reason for all the trouble in the land. Loved it, 11/10, im gonna be here for months lmao
I'm also a fan of ghostburs slight red shift and the fact that in his scene where he found jschlatt, they were both solid red and blue, showing ghostburs absolute purity and the fact that schlatt is nature's way of cruelly balancing the scales (matpat explained this theory and wilbur hinted at it being true in his reaction).I am also a huge fan of how the discs are always red, because they've been the reason for almost all conflict on the server upto this point. Do I even need to talk about the strings with dream, and tommy finally taking away all the power dream has over him? Its amazing. Again, lovely animation.
The color red pops up on every character at least once, and that's what makes the Dream SMP so fascinating! Because nobody is the clear 'good' or 'bad guy', they're all just characters doing the best they can. :)

And noticing how in the community house Techno only turns red once Dream comes to his side, and the same with Tommy and Tubbo. It illustrates that Techno and Tommy don’t see each other as the enemy themselves, but that their alliances are what lead them to perceive the other in that light

dream being the puppet master is honestly one of the darkest characters i’ve seen in any story, period. most villains have tunnel vision, but dream somehow managed to win every major conflict without getting involved and simply by pulling the strings. his character was genius, but it’s his own cockiness that bit him in the end. really well made villain, 10/10.

i really love how the lyrics of the song sometimes sync up with the events of the video. like "it'll all be fine this time" with ranboo, "i could learn from you" with dream revealing tubbo is tommy's greatest weakness, not the disks and "help me out, dont let me down" when punz comes through the portal with the others behind him. its such a small thing that makes the whole video really flow and i cant stop watching it over and over again to catch the different parts because of how cool it is :)
also one lyric like that i really appreciate is "solid ground" and wilbur appears, his first appearance since his death and he appears translucent bc hes still not alive

I really like how much is shown with the axe of peace. Techno gives it to Tommy, and in this it shows tommy cutting the strings from dream with it. It’s almost as if the axe finally filled out its namesake...
now I just have to wait for Tommy to give it back to techno, signaling that he's trying to resolve their animosity....(probably not going to happen but I want it to, god damnit Tommy why'd you betray techno?!)

The way “I could learn from you” is heard when Wilbur returns is amazing. At first I thought it was how Tommy could learn from Wilbur and be better, but after the “I’m proud of you Tommy” I took it more as Wilbur could learn something from TOMMY.

i just absolutely love how tubbo shifts to his bloody butcher attire when it's shown in techno's perspective, the whole video is absolutely stunning and it truly felt like watching a whole movie, i swear it took me like 10 minutes to watch this 4 minute video because i kept replaying and pausing to take in all the details and getting amazed each time

things that i’m unsure if anyone else has noticed:
“it’ll all be fine this time” almost every time it says this line it shows ranboo, possibly referring to his characters anxiety
“cause you always seemed so kind” the first time this line was said, it shows techno handing his axe to tommy in trust, only to be betrayed later
i took the second one, since this is mostly from tommy's pov, that techno giving him the axe to 'you always seemed so kind' was him reflecting that gifts meant nothing when the person giving them is only giving you conditional love, and will stop caring for you once you're no longer with them, and they'll punish you for it.

It can show both povs, since techno and dream turn red and Tommy and tubbo turn red next, indicating the two of them are looking at each other and seeing one another from each other's perspectives. It can be both their povs in this case.
edit: plus, the dream smp doesn't treat Techno that way so I don't think this creator would either. Techno never acted like he was giving Tommy "conditional love", in fact it was the opposite way around. Only when Tommy betrayed Techno did Techno lose respect for Tommy. And even in Techno's will he holds no animosity towards Tommy. It was never conditional love with him, but conditional respect, which is supposed to be conditional. If you betray someone, you lose their trust. So in this instance, it's definitely referring to Techno being betrayed, imo.

What makes Late-August’s animatics so good is that you can feel every emotion without the need for dialogue unlike other animatics. The color shifts portray the mood of each scene.

the fact that the only voiceover you've ever used in these animatics is "i'm proud of you tommy, i'm proud of you." really ties all of them together perfectly and gives such an emotional conclusion. the fact that this trilogy of animatics that portray the insane story that is dream smp both start with wilbur and end with wilbur is so impactful. i love this so much!

idk if someone mentioned this already but imma say it anyways,, that scene where Techno shoots Tubbo and Tommy (1:27) it goes through Tubbo's head and Tommy's heart. I feel like it has something to do with Tubbo always taking the logical approach to things (head) while Tommy always acts based on his emotions (heart). but maybe i'm just reading to much into it.

you're right lmao,,, Tubbo even said himself after the exile that Tommy thinks with emotion while he thinks with logic, and while it's sometimes a good combination it can also lead to a ton of clashing. Also, I just generally like that the scene was included, because there was actually. bit during the war when Techno shot at Tommy and Tubbo jumped in front of him, but the explosion killed them both anyways lol

Absolutely nobody talks about how almost a quarter of all the frames are faceless, even though they feature characters. Late-August is so talented that we don't need to see characters' emotions to feel them. First time i ever see an artist who nails that 3 times in a row, god i hope to see him do it again.

This song is so perfect to portray Tommy's pov. Everyone is always trying to teach Tommy a lesson, and although he seems not to learn from them, his character actually developed so much. But their ways of teaching just caused so much negative effects on Tommy that they chose to ignore (which I understand because they're also hurt too). Man, that last line "I could learn from you" and it's Tommy and Wilbur. I'm crying this is so beautiful. I already watched this yesterday and I'm gonna watch it everyday religiously lmaooo

I can’t get over how good this is!! The doomsday fight scene was so fluid and I love how well the song matches up! Like, at 0:40 “You always seem so kind” when Techno is giving Tommy the Axe of Peace, foreshadowing his struggle with Techno and their betrayal. 1:46 “will you help me die” when they’re trying to revive Wilbur is scarily fitting. At 2:00 with Ranboo “It’ll all be fine”, matches his denial and stream names, immediately followed with 2:06 “You always seemed so kind” with Jack Manifold, who’s planning on killing Tommy. There’s a lot more, but Man. Your use of colors, your character design? It’s just all so fantastic.

I love how Tommy's perspective gets shattered (literally in the animatic) when Dream points the sword at Tubbo. Tommy finally realises Friends are more important then discs.
He finally realized that Tubbo was worth more than the discs ever were
I took it as the illusion of victory, and even a battle, being shattered as Dream reveals this was his plan and he was always in control, but I love how many different interpretations can be drawn from one element! It’s very cool to read about and discuss

That brings back when Wilbur said “how did you do it?” Because even Wilbur was shocked he managed to pull it off. Even though Wilbur was a little bit crazy at the end he truly is proud of Tommy in how far he has come (outside of character away from Dream Smp and in character in Dream smp)

he’s a half enderman/half unknown creature. He used to be part of lmanburg, and was gonna run for president before it blew up. He had to choose sides in the later conflicts, and he chose to be neutral with Phil and techno (he joined the attic commune because they were kind to him) . Oh yeah he has silk touch hands and has a dream voice in his head that manipulates him. He also is known for having horrible memory and remembering nothing , so he has a memory book. Hope this covered it.

the hug between tubbo and tommy. the significance of tommy cutting the strings from dream. and all the symbolism. it's gorgeous. the animators really make the story 10x better
I believe Late should've put one piece where everyone's string is cut except Rambo. Could give some interesting feelings about it.
I like the line, “It’ll all be fine this time” showing Ranboo because in one of Ranboo’s monologues, he implied that there was a time in his past where he was in a situation where everyone around him kept choosing sides and it ended up leading to their downfall. He was hoping the same thing wouldn’t happen with his new home, L’manberg.
I also really liked how the strings attached to Tommy weren’t connected to Dream in one part, but rather to Tommy’s attachments. The power of attachments was a really strong theme in this season and was super cool to see.

I'm not sure if anyone has pointed this out yet, but at 1:50, Ghostbur reaches out and grabs Fundy's hand only for it to switch to Schlatt. That whole scene with Ghostbur is probably my favourite thing from this whole animatic. It's just so well done.

The egg saga will be a smaller plot than the disc saga. I think they’re giving sad-ist more time to catch up by doing lots of little small plots instead of a massive one xD
I think that when the egg will take over the server tommy (who is immune) dream who I think is also immune because he and tommy were the only one who built church prime and with the help of dream tommy will bring wilbur and Jschlat back to life to fight the egg and technoblade's only weakness is badboyhalo so he'll stay away from this matter until he is forced to join it.
Secondly Dream is a part of Ranboo so that means ranboo is also immune to getter with his enderman powers he will do something game changing.
Soon will come Philza's time for the omelette arc

Re-watching this almost 3 years later and after it’s been a while since the SMP ended, it hit me hard. All of the nostalgia and how much simpler my life felt when the DSMP was around came rushing back to me and I cried.
This feels like it was a couple weeks ago, I can’t believe it’s been almost 3 years…

The symbolism of the red and “the enemy” is so lovely!! Here’s some analysis!
0:23 Really neat effect for Ranboo here, it really incapsulates his dilemma in such a punctual manner. Red and green are his colors, but the red could also represent the enemy within himself.
0:55 here we’re looking from Tommy’s perspective and we see Tubbo with a red tie. Tommy never hated Tubbo, never saw him as the true enemy, that’s why he’s not fully red, but he stood in opposition to Tubbo and the red is there.
1:01 the disc becoming red as Tommy realizes that his obsession with them has become toxic and that is his true enemy
1:05 as Dream sides with Techno, Tommy comes to view both of them, even Techno, as his enemy
1:07 similar to above, as Tommy sides with Tubbo, Techno comes to see them both as his enemies
1:09 the red on Ranboo as he is exposed as a traitor, alienating him from all his friends. However, the red flickers in and out, no one truly sees him as an enemy (except maybe Quackity) but Dream’s influence still taints him, even if only to himself

Late August, your story-telling, editing, design, song choice... it all never ceases to amaze and delight me. I watched all three animatics in a row and I still can't get over how good they all are, collectively and in their own right.
People may joke that these animatics are the DSMP movie, but I'd honestly posit that they're absolutely correct.

This has become my comfort animatic as of late...
I remember joining the community during the pogtopia days... staying up way past midnight binge watching old vods trying to catch up...
The absolute roller coaster of emotions the characters took me through. I started watching the dsmp after already seeing dreams manhunts, and so I was very conflicted once I started seeing his charecter in lore.
Brought me, and so many of you through some of the greatest and worst times in our lives.
