Hi Friends, sitting in my bedroom in my Village I would look at the back of albums memorising credits and one of the names that kept reappearing over and over again was Val Garay! Val is synonymous with the sound of West Coast Rock, he worked with so many incredible artists and made such beautiful sounding records it's hard for me not to hear music from that period and not think of his recordings! Please enjoy the video and be sure to check out some incredible tips he gives us!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
+Produce Like A Pro Thanks Warren great video please do go back soon and visit Val Garay he has lot of great insight would love to see him at work deconstructing a mix
Wow...I'm blown away! So many records that I grew up listening to, admiring the production...and 40 years later, he's still cutting edge. Thank you for an amazing interview with an amazing guy!
What a great interveiw! I love Val's records, and I love how he would demonstrate what he was talking about (by playing tracks, picking up a guitar,...) Thanks Warren, thanks Val!
Definitely my favorite episode yet! That's the coolest home studio ever, love the easy access to the kitchen...nothing goes with music like home cooking lol. Thanks so much for this...and Happy Birthday!
Great interview Warren. In the late 70's as a young engineer I was glued to the records Val made, wondering 'how the hell did he get that sound?!' Still inspires me today. Great insight and very generous with his knowledge. Thanks.
Well done interview Warren. Val's productions stood out from everything else in the 70's and still stand up today as classics. Thank you for this...I'm surprised the aural exciter didn't come up.. that would have been interesting. Keep up the great work. It's appreciated.
Hi +Harvey Sawatzky You're welcome!! Yes Val is AMAZING!! I grew up loving his albums and I jumped at the chance of interviewing him!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
SO much to learn! This was an amazing interview. Lots of things that i did not understand, especially what Branden said. Long road ahead! What I find great about these interviews is that I get to know about stuff that I never would have thought about and each interview gives a glimpse of a different school of thought which I can then go and explore and learn more about. That is really special! Thanks for all the videos Warren!
Hi +Hrushabh T Yes Val is amazing! He has made some of the best sounding records ever!! Glad to be able to help share information!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
WOW THE SYMPHONY II!!!!! Mr. Huart you are without a doubt a guardian angel to us! You just saved me 4000 dollars because I was about to buy the Apogee Symphony but now I'm going to wait for the Symphony II!!!! THAN YOU SO MUCH!!!
Hey Warren, it's been a while since I had time to sit and watch a video... (building my studio still...) but tonight I took a break and watched this video, and let me tell you... I am so glad I did! Just like you said, I picked up several tips... love the bass tracking idea! I could sit and chat with Val for hours... probably to the point where he'd have to have me physically removed! lol. Thanks again for a great video... keep up the great work Warren! Danny.
Hi +Danny MacNevin Fantastic!! Have fun building your Studio!! Really glad you enjoyed it! Val is great and has made some of the best sounding albums ever! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Warren - hey hi - I'd like to introduce myself - since i get e-mails from you every week - I'm in New Zealand - LOVE what you're doing on your channel - its just so amazing. We'd be around the same age i guess - I might be a year or two older - you reference the same era's as i went through I download the youtube clips in 1080 with Clipconveter - sling them on a Usb stick and watch them on my big 42" TV in the morning instead of watching car make-over shows (I'm not really even into cars) - don't worry - not uploading or sharing the clips - just want to enjoy each hour plus of interviews in comfort - in hi res - without the feed stuttering and lying on my sofa! Love the insight into what top producers and engineers are doing today in 2016 - and i appreciate how you don't discriminate between less expensive and more affordable setups and desks vs in-the-box - we get to see it ALL that way I have a nice home studio 100% non-commercial - and I'm no expert at all - but I've not so much learnt a lot for watching 20 of your interviews as i had gained re-enforcement and confidence that I'm on the right track - which is priceless! Look forward to every one of your clips Would be cool to send you some pics of my setup Paspallum / Mountain Bird (whichever of my RUclips channels I'm on) Moujntain Bird studio
‘Anytime’ the man said - Soon as we are back to normal, let’s go back! Please aha...So pleased this video exists, thanks so very much indeed! Bring on part 2 ✌️
Hi Warren Another great interview. Many thanks. In the mid 70's the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Commission) used Shure SM53's almost exclusively on their historic t.v. music show "Countdown". They were used on everything from interview mics to band performances. In 1975 I was working as a tech at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and I had to buy all the gear for a new studio. I bought a bunch of SM53's and used them on everything from Fender guitar amps to jazz bands and their 9' Bosendorfer grand. Even worked on violins, which are tough. Sweet sounds. In Australia I haven't seen any for decades. Now they'll probably be even more scarce! Cheers
Hi +rick veneer Wow! Do you have any left you can sell me? Haha! Yes Val is giving us some gold tips here! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Wow, love Val. I still don't understand how he got his amazing mixes back in the day. It inspired me to build up an analog collection to hopefully one day get his sound.
Hi Warren, few months after i watched this vid, i was lucky enough to find one Sony ECM 50ps on ebay. Boy, it really sounds awesome on the acoustic guitar. I always struggled with guitar recording. Not anymore. I found my goto setup now. Thanks so much for this video! God bless you. P.S. i also found out that Tchad Blake, my favorite engineer, even used two ECM 50 as a binaural pair attached to his ears! Now i only need another one. :D
like all your videos, simply Great, all this information you provide for us all the time, thank you for existing warren, great information and awsome videos!
Warren: Thank you, and Happy New Year (if I didn't already say so to you before)! Thanks for another great one. I'm glad to see that there is someone who is not stuck on using the same microphone "formula" on everything! Nice tip on the Shure SM53. I will grab one as soon as I find one. Likewise on the Sony ECM-50PS. Pete Townshend's go-to mic for vocals in his home studio is an old small battery powered Sony mic. He is also a huge fan of Doug Sax and the Mastering Lab Tannoy-Manley monitors, as is Al Schmitt. (There's a suggestion for two guests.) I've recently started thinking about how I can sound different from everyone else and still sound "good". I immediately thought of using different microphones for many applications. (I've given you an example or two in the past.) Case in point: I'm not a great fan of the SM57, so I will chose something else in it's place for the applications where most people will use one. Thanks again! Oh yes; and keep recording! HA! LOL!
Hi +67Stu Happy New Year to you too! Yes Dave Jerden loved the Tannoy Little Gold's with the Doug Sax Mastering Lab Crossovers as well!! Al Schmidt would be an amazing guest!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Very informative. It's great to see such innovation from a professional who has been involved in producing great music for such a long time. great session.
You guys nabbed all the Sonys!! Haha I bought the "ecm 50 pbw" hopefully same sound as the 50ps.. Huge james Taylor fan, gotta try to pair it with my 414buls thanks again waren, love the studio tours/interviews
Hey Warren, I heard you mentioned The Doors. I love the production of their records and this may be a long shot but could you perhaps do a mix breakdown of a song of theirs? I'm so memorized by their vocals and organ play.
Hi +Steve A Yes agreed Randy was amazing! Rest In Peace Glenn Frey! Huge loss! 67 is extremely young these days!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Cheers again Warren ! There's a recent mix masterclass floating around youtube in case anyone is more interested in Val Garray, it has a few more gems in there !
Hey Awesome Interview Warren!... I must say I got a bit lost with some of the DEEP technical talk lol...But that re-call software look amazing! Thanks again. Grant...
Hi +Grant Davies Thanks!! Yes Val rules, he's extremely talented and has made some amazing albums!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi David, yes!! That's amazing! Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Many thanks to both Val and Warren for this great interview! "Mistaken Identity" by Kim Carnes is such a great sounding album, even after 35 years. Obviously "Bette Davis Eyes" is an absolutely outstanding song, but I also like "Still Hold On" a lot. I have a soft spot for such ballads, hehe. It's also amazing how the song starts with a synth pad, but then goes into a completely different direction than you'd expect. A question to Val, if you might read this: Is there a chance you remember what was used to get the lush guitar sound on "Bette Davis Eyes"? I think that guitar sound really played a part in the success of the song. I know that chorused guitars are and have been out out fashion now for a quarter of a century, but what shall I say - I just like the sound, haha. But maybe one day they'll have a renaissance, just like huge reverbs had. Many thanks, David
Hi +David Mood Aw shucks! Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Great question!! Oh I'd love to know how he got that guitar sound as well!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Ill be Darned, I found an ECM50 mic on Ebay and used it as a pickup on my acoustic and it was very impressive. Now Ill just throw my Lewitt 940 on it and it should do the trick. The only thing is the ECM50 seems to have a bit of a problem with it, so I ordered a new Sony ECM55 which is apparently its replacement and have my fingers crossed that the issue with the ECM50 is not in the ECM55 also. Great tip from Val and Ill continue to use this as a miking option for some of my acoustic instruments. Thanks so much, yet again Warren and Val.
HI +AmielRocker Thanks very much! Please tell your friend he has an amazing product!! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I watched this video 5 time and can watch it more, I do not know what Val Garay is doing, but he is the Real Deal as a Producer, I am sure if you ask Mutt Lange, he may agree on that...Val should be producing the top Pop and Pop Rock artists of today!...what I would do to met this cat...he is amazing and his arrangements were so modern and musical..... just check Bette Davis Eyes!! he is a genius...
must try that bass DI /w amp trick. As I understood him he slams DI pretty hard with compression and leaves amp pretty open to bring players "groove" in.
Hi +dblbassted Wow. Thank. You. haha! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Yes there's some real gems of information in there from Val! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Speaking of Mics I was on guitar centers page and noticed they have a handheld lewitt condenser mic for $70. It is the MTP 240 DM. I know you have a fondness for lewitt mics and was wondering if that one was a good value or not?
Hi +Steven Butler Thanks for your great comment! I actually have never used this mic except on a snare! Which it worked well on! Seems like a good deal, are you looking for an inexpensive dynamic mic? Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Produce Like A Pro I am always on the lookout for value microphones. I thought this one was a condenser though and not a dynamic... It is listed as a condenser on guitar centers page but it wouldn't be the first time they are wrong.
Hi +Steven Butler Must be GC's mistake, it's definitely a Dynamic Mic. I'll be doing a Lewitt giveaway soon of the LCT240. Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Whats up on these infinity subwoofers though? I see whole sets of infinity surround sound speakers for sale online but what amp would I need just to power the sub if I already have active monitors?
Hi +Alex Fischels Good question! I believe most of the Infinity subs I have seen are all powered, so you won't need a power amp to drive it. Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi +Fezzler61 Good question! I have never liked Trackballs so I can't really speak authoritatively about them! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
the weaver Thanks. I have had a Logitech Trackball M570 for about a year and it keeps double clicking even if I only press once. Ergonomics are great - build quality poor.
I really must ask.. (bet I'd find a lot about this online but I'd like to hear it first hand :-) )how come all A-list people coming through your interviews still uses these Pro Tools-systems? I mean they seem to cost a lot and now they also charge per year for the upgrades and support. What is it about PT that keeps you guys so attached to it? I'm not trying to be a smart-ass or anything, I'm just curious because I've only been using Logic. I first bought Logic 8, which back then cost about 10000 Swedish kronor (about 1250 dollars at todays rates) and know Logic X is 200 dollars. Is PT really worth the price difference or is it simply because it has become the "standard" for the top mixers and therefore is kind of set in stone? I've heard that you, Warren, talked about using Logic for it's samples and stock instruments but that you still mix in PT. Great video as always! I always enjoy the gear-talk. Keep 'em coming! :)
+Magnus Hallin, Not only is it the state of the art but as soon as someone comes up with a serious recording program that has NO latency we'll all go buy it! Logic is great with Midi but overdubbing is a pain and it's not really intuitive either. Yes it's an Apple program but designed by the Swedes and therefor it's not really Apple friendly at all if you know what I mean. Just Sayin! PS I hate that I have to pay those people now every year!!! And, I just spent 12.5K on a new upgrade. :-(
Hi +Val Garay Yes they do get us!! I too have bought many systems! Great times Val! Fantastic interview! You Rock! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi +Magnus Hallin I do like Logic for Virtual Sounds! It's fantastic! Pro Tools is my audio editing choice and mixing choice though. Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi +Ray Syed That was a thread hanging off my shirt! He has great eye sight for noticing that! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I've got a D-Command too, and prefer it to S6. Also think the S6 gets too visual again, Icon very eyes off - no screens needed, and don't like touchscreens.
Hi +Ben Spinks Haha I know I already went online and bought one!! They are still cheap!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi +Jed Wunderli That's a good question! I don't actually know! I will have to ask him, have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I know Frank Garay from Cali who plays the guitar (he's actually in the mortgage industry) and has a band. With a name like Garay I figure they have to be related somehow. Thanks again.
+MegaTreeBark I don't think it was the shot glass like object, that seemed to be espresso! Maybe the razor blade and the constant snorting..... all in all a great interview!! Thanks Warren!
Hi +FNStudio1 Haha yes we were drinking Espresso! Val has an amazing Coffee machine, was quite a treat! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi +Wench Yes Val sold it for a fraction of that and Allen Sides was trying to sell it for that huge amount but I don't think he sold it.Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi +Wench Haha no way!! He was saying that they were trying to sell to for for far too much!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

Hi Warren
Another great interview.
Cheers

Val is the bees knees. That story about the bottom end was the best!
Hi +Adam Fudala Yes Val rules!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Best. Video. Yet.
Hi +dblbassted Wow. Thank. You. haha! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Yes there's some real gems of information in there from Val! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Love this interview. I am probably going to have to buy those mics now! :)
Hi +Steven Butler Haha me too!!
Produce Like A Pro
I am always on the lookout for value microphones.
Just gotta say, NICE jacket Val!
What a nice guy! Great interview!
Hi +Diogo Sarcinelli Thanks very much! Yes Val rules! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

HI +DJ Kicksled Thanks very much! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Super cool dude right here
Val garay is definitely the perfect look alike of my father i'm shocked
Awesome dude!
Hi +TheDementians Thanks very much!!
Great!!
HI +MozTV Thanks very much! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Wonderful interview! I notice many of the Pros love trackballs. Is there a "standard" they use?
Hi +Fezzler61 Good question! I have never liked Trackballs so I can't really speak authoritatively about them! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
+Produce Like A Pro i just got a kensington expert i think it's called. still getting used to it, but definitely a fan.
Hi +the weaver Fantastic!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
the weaver Thanks. I have had a Logitech Trackball M570 for about a year and it keeps double clicking even if I only press once. Ergonomics are great - build quality poor.
Hi +Fezzler61 I'm just a regular mouse guy myself! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Awesome.
Warren, it seems that the shorter your hair gets, the better your videos become. Any correlation? :)
Hi +Seth Johnson Haha I'm the anti-Samson!! Haha Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
best ever!!!
Hi +ostromogothron Thanks very much!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Thanks for your replies! I'm just going to sign up for the trial and try PT out. I guess that's the only way I can go about it really :)
Hi +Magnus Hallin Great! Please let us know how you get on! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Does something get caught on your arm at around the 35 minute mark?
Hi +Ray Syed That was a thread hanging off my shirt! He has great eye sight for noticing that! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I've got a D-Command too, and prefer it to S6. Also think the S6 gets too visual again, Icon very eyes off - no screens needed, and don't like touchscreens.
what was the deal with your arm @ 35?
Hi +BitterrootRambler Haha it was a thread! Have a marvellous time recoding and mixing, many thanks Warren
I won't be able to sleep now after that James Taylor mic tip. 🙂
same here!
Hi +Ben Spinks Haha I know I already went online and bought one!! They are still cheap!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi +Jim Gahagan Haha understood! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
+Produce Like A Pro this just might be the secret to my singer/songwriter i'm working with!
Hi +Jim Gahagan haha nice! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
sm53 going for 199.lol you called it!
Hi +Jim Gahagan haha of course!! And they are just going to keep going up and up! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Great interview as usual, Warren. On a side note, does Val have a son by the name of Frank?
Hi +Jed Wunderli That's a good question! I don't actually know! I will have to ask him, have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I know Frank Garay from Cali who plays the guitar (he's actually in the mortgage industry) and has a band. With a name like Garay I figure they have to be related somehow. Thanks again.
Hi +Jed Wunderli Haha it might be!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Teaboy should have upgraded to tapeop by now ;)
I thought something was off during this interview
*sees Val Garay pick up small shot glass like object.
+MegaTreeBark I don't think it was the shot glass like object, that seemed to be espresso! Maybe the razor blade and the constant snorting..... all in all a great interview!! Thanks Warren!
+MegaTreeBark Looks like an espresso to me
Hi +FNStudio1 Haha yes we were drinking Espresso! Val has an amazing Coffee machine, was quite a treat! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi +MegaTreeBark Haha that's an Espresso! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi +Ray Syed Agreed! It was an Espresso! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
96kHz, why? Just because you can, I guess...
Hi +Bernd Schuller haha yes I suppose so!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
+Bernd Schüler No because the 3rd active harmonics are better at 96 and now I'm mixing at 192
+Val Garay I see, so you can really tell the difference, thanks for the reply!
+Bernd Schüler Yes you certainly can tell....
If +Val Garay says it's a lot better! Then it's a lot better! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
God damn it Val stop showing the tricks!!! People need to pay for that kinda stuff!
"3 million, thats a lot of money" "then, yeah" how fucking rich is this guy????
Hi +Wench Yes Val sold it for a fraction of that and Allen Sides was trying to sell it for that huge amount but I don't think he sold it.Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Produce Like A Pro oh i thought he meant 3 million is nothing nowadays haha
Hi +Wench Haha no way!! He was saying that they were trying to sell to for for far too much!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
2nd
Hi +Charming Cthulhu Haha yes indeed! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Produce Like A Pro thanks you too
