    As a Union Master Plumber for 32 years I have installed cast iron underground on most of the projects I worked on. In fact I could install cast iron bell and spigot faster then gluing plastic pipe anytime. The install time is almost half and if the inspector wants to see a head test I don't to wait for glue to setup.

    Interesting, yet in my opinion a one sided story. The fact that the ground settled beneath the slab is of concern, since this is the root of the problem, not the pipe material itself. With proper pad-site preparation and compaction this would not have occurred, moreover, that fact that the soil/materials beneath the pad did settle is evident of poor compaction or perhaps reintroducing sub par soils materials back into the trenching. By no means is the VE idea to go with PVC the culprit, as the settling would even strain the system with cast iron materials (no-hub or CISP hub/spigot joints), and cause cast iron joints to pull apart.

    VE is finding ways to do the “function” reliably at lower cost if such a technical alternative is available. VE is proper engineering. VE is appropriate engineering.

    This is Cost Cutting and not Value Engineering. Value Engineering is seeking alternative solutions to add value to the project. You just used the wrong terminology. I would appreciate if you could re-post this video with replacing the term "Value Engineering" with the term "Cost Cutting" and this video is a great example on the difference between Value Engineering method and Cost Cutting Method.
